Program Overview
Attempting to reveal the truth of existence through the dangling cables the Machine God has encircled you with? Are you a social outcast? Do you chew on rusty metal? How about shiny metal? Then we may be for you. The Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror in Literature Program (Sci-Fi) provides a venue to discuss these three literary genres in an informed group. Members select novels and short stories in these areas for the program as a whole to read. These stories are then discussed at program meetings for their content, literary style, enjoyability, and deeper meaning. Films in these genres are also discussed and watched, as there is a Sci-Fi movie night at least once a month. Role-Playing games are also a big part of the social atmosphere of Sci-Fi, and efforts are made to introduce this recreation to those that are unfamiliar with it and are interested. The program related reading is a significant part of the program, and participation is based on this heavily.

Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine to Nellie Ruth Pillsbury and Donald King. He and his older brother, David, were raised primarily by his mother after his father left for a pack of cigarettes and never returned. Stephen's childhood was spent living between Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family lived, and Massachusetts and Maine with his mother and her family. Eventually, Stephen and David settled with their mother in Durham Maine, where the boys attended school. King graduated from high school in 1966 and pursued a Bachelors of Science degree in English at the University of Maine at Orono. While a student, he met his future wife, Tabitha Spruce, among the shelves of the Folger Campus Library, where both worked as students. King graduated from the University in 1970, and married Tabitha in 1971. King initially was unable to find placement as a teacher, so he and Tabitha lived off his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loans and savings. Occasionally they would receive a boost from one of his short stories that had been published in various men's magazines. Many of these stories were later compiled into the Night Shift collection.

IV. Appendices I. Introduction This Collections Policy Statement deals with fantasy and science fiction and is intended to complement the existing Collections Policy Statement for Literature. While the latter statement addresses the need for the Library to acquire works by authors "whose writings are generally regarded as having literary merit [or] as representing important trends in serious creative writing", genre designations such as fantasy, science fiction, science fantasy, and horror often eliminate works of cultural and artistic merit from serious consideration by the literary mainstream. Although often overlooked, the predominantly Anglo-American genre of fantasy and its sub-genre, science fiction, both express and embody with increasing significance important elements of the popular culture of the United States, as well many other nations; hence, they are accorded separate treatment in the present statement. In second editions of major works, Richard Bleiler has updated his father Everett’s 1982 book of the same title, while Neil Barron has fused and revamped his previous reader’s guides, Fantasy Literature and Horror Literature (both published by Garland Press in 1990). Though the two books offer valuable revisions, they also have their problems; yet they are considerably superior to similar efforts by Robert Sabella and Roger Shepard.
