Date: Mon, 4 Nov 1996
Subject: Science Fiction Reference Books This is a summary of the best, most current, primary SF references I am aware of to identify first editions, find reading material, find stories with favorite themes, pricing, etc.
GENERAL REFERENCE, ENCYCLOPEDIA
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION , 1993 St. Martins, 1370 pages. Hard back $75. Paperback updated 1995. $29.95. Illustrated CD ROM available from Grolier for Mac and Windoze. An indispensable reference book on science fiction that contains over 4,300 entries and 1.2 million words. For every reader who loves, uses and wishes to know more about science fiction, this is the first and most important reference you should get. Has publication dates and title changes only with no other first edition ID information. Unlike the 1979 edition, the book is not illustrated and there are no magazine checklists.
SF FIRST EDITION IDENTIFICATION
Currey Lloyd SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY AUTHORS: A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THEIR FIRST EDITIONS , 1979, G. K. Hall. Covers roughly 215 important authors thru December 1977, reference citations thru June 1979. Although perhaps the most important, thorough and accurate guide to identification of first editions, it if far from complete or accurate. For instance it is very easy to misidentify Heinlein's STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND by Currey's less than complete description. There are almost no cover/dust jacket prices or page counts mentioned excepting paperbacks. $75 from author at (518)873-6477

Library Resources for Research in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror
Scholarly research in science fiction, fantasy, and horror can be problematic given the popular nature of the topic. While certain titles, authors or topics may be covered by academic sources, it may be necessary to look at popular magazines and other non-scholarly sources for information, such as book reviews or interviews. This is especially true of very recent publications. In addition, science fiction, fantasy and horror, more than other genres, tend to crossover into other media with great frequency, so looking at resources on film, video games and other formats may be productive. Catalogs and Union Catalogs Online Catalog
LIBCAT includes the materials (books, journals, videos, documents and other materials) that the Libraries hold. Be aware that there are groups of materials not included in the catalog: many government documents and microform sets that we own may not appear in LIBCAT. WorldCat deliverEdocs form.

Discussion
Many science fiction and fantasy writers are "non-religious" (or, more accurately, their "religion" is writing science fiction and fantasy in the strictly sociological sense of what constitutes an important motivation or community for them). Many other SF/F authors have stated a preference for secular philosophies such as atheism, agnosticism, and in some cases humanism. Some writers have a highly individualized religiosity or belief system which doesn't fit into into a traditional classification (e.g. Philip K. Dick). English language science fiction and fantasy authors who are adherents of traditional religious faiths usually belong to a branch of Christianity (these include Catholics, Anglicans, Latter-day Saints, Protestants, etc.) or are Jews. Religious adherents from other religions (Hindu, Baha'i, Tenrikyo, Wiccan) are listed here as well. We have been unable to identify any Sikh SF/F writers, and only one Muslim SF/F writer and one Buddhist SF/F writer. (In

Feature Topic and Links: Fantasy Writing: Inspirations Even those imaginative writers of fantasy literature can sometimes find themselves short on ideas. How does the intrepid fantasy author best cope with this situation? After all, trying to produce credible fantastic stories when you're at a loss for fresh concepts can result in work that falls back on the standard cliches of the genre and thus feels, well . . . uninspired. To avoid this predicament, it's best to take a breather from writing and simply read. Read books and stories by other writers, and research topics that interest you until you begin to feel that pleasant click in your mind as it latches onto a new story. Of course, you'll want to begin by surfing. Here are some places to start Web sites dealing with folklore, mythology, and other fantastic stuff: Britannia: King Arthur This fantasy topic never dies! If you're planning to write about Arthurian legend, you'd better make your tale different, since there's lots of competition. This site is great for researching all the finer points and latest scholarship about the King and his cohorts. The Encyclopedia Mythica Don't confine yourself to Celtic, Greek and Roman mythology when looking for seeds of inspiration. This site has extensive information about Haitian, Chinese, Persian and Aztec mythical beings, among others.

Welcome! There are many GLBT connections to Science Fiction Fantasy Horror , and Literature Gothic Horror's founders were gay : Walpole, Lewis, and Beckford; and so is the modern master, Clive Barker. Several landmark works are by gay authors, including Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray , Stoker's Dracula , James's Turn of the Screw , Barrie's Peter Pan and Howard's 'sword-and-sorcery' icon, Conan . GLBT authors sometimes write about non-gay characters with a special resonance (Woolrich's I Married a Dead Man ), while straight-identified writers include key GLBT figures (Jackson's Haunting of Hill House ). Alternative sexualities have also inspired a vital tradition (LeGuin's Left Hand of Darkness ). In the past, GLBTs were villains or monsters, but increasingly their roles have become more diverse, complex, and open. suggest what should be included or omitted. NOTE: This list is representative, not exhaustive, so for most authors I've included only one work per genre. (You can search for more titles; and thanks for using my Amazon.com
