By Alan Scott

The purpose of the conference was to (a) create a common vision for earth and space science education in the 21 st century; (b) develop a "blueprint for change" that will be widely disseminated and help to guide our collective earth and space science education reform efforts during the next decade; and (c) build awareness and support for the "revolution" across the sciences, social sciences, and other disciplines.
To produce the blueprint for change, participants were divided into the following working groups: curriculum and materials, professional development and teacher preparation, partnerships and collaborations, assessment and evaluation

Astrology is an old practice, which has many different levels. I won't pretend to be that knowledgable about it because I've never been involved with it, but its clear that there are many different levels of astrology, from pulling your horoscope from the newspaper to people that attempt to predict things by positions of planets and stars as they relate to each other. So...you wanna be an Astronaut? The 21st century promises the challenge for humans to live and work in space. The achievements of scientists, engineers, technicians, and specialists who will build and operate the Space Station are the legacy of the national Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) many years of experience in selecting and training astronauts to work on the frontier of space. http://www.sron.nl/www/code/aboutsron/earthOrientedScience.php
Earth Oriented Science Observing System Earth from space has the advantage of providing global and homogeneous coverage and long lasting time series of measurements as compared to ground based observations. This advantage has led to initiatives for international space research programmes in which Earth Observation provides essential diagnostic tools for research of System Earth in general and Global Change in particular. The activities of SRON concern the development of space-borne instruments and the interpretation of measurements by these instruments for Earth sciences, i.e. aiming to improve our understanding of planet Earth. The SRON programme for Earth system science is focussed on two main lines of research: Physics and chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere
SRON was responsible for the development and production of the detector modules of SCIAMACHY. The present activities of the atmosphere group include the calibration and interpretation of GOME and SCIAMACHY measurements in the ultraviolet, visible and near infrared. With regard to new missions SRON contributes to the development and calibration of the OMI and GOME-2 spectrometers. Furthermore, the balloon-based instrument TELIS for atmospheric limb sounding in the far infra-red and sub-mm spectral range is deployed to demonstrate new cryogenic heterodyne technology, presently under development at SRON. Dynamics of the solid Earth and the oceans
The activities of the solid Earth and oceans group are focussed on the preparation and interpretation of satellite measurements of the Earth's gravitational field. SRON is involved in two missions, GOCE and SMART2. Within GOCE, ESA's first Earth Explorer core mission, SRON contributes to mission end-to-end simulation, and the calibration, quality assessment and validation of the level-1 data products. The SMART-2 mission is a technology demonstrator for LISA, an ambitious mission to detect gravitational waves from astronomical binary systems. The same technology, however, is also favourite to be used in the next generation of Earth gravity missions. SRON contributes to SMART-2 with modelling of the inertial sensor system, integrated mission simulation and a dynamic test set-up for the payload system.

Earth Science Enterprise
Several Maine organizations are conducting research and education activities that relate to the study of Earth from space and the upper atmosphere. The following Affiliates of the Maine Space Grant Consortium are currently working on such projects: Gulf of Maine Aquarium GMA translates aquatic science for K-12 audiences and the general public. Because satellites offer a unique perspective on global aquatic ecosystems, much of GMA's work in recent years has relied on NASA and NOAA satellite imagery. Current or recent NASA-funded projects include the development of 100 Web-based K-12 activities about satellite imaging; the design, development and statewide dissemination of a public exhibit about how NASA's TOPEX/Poseidon oceanographic satellite works; and a series of hurricane posters with related classroom activities. Visit GMA's web site to learn more. Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Bigelow Lab examines Maine's seas "From Microscopes to Satellites." Much of their research focuses on plankton, which provide the basis for all marine life. Using NASA's satellite-derived images of ocean color, Bigelow's scientists study how patterns of sunlight and nutrients influence where phytoplankton grow. They also examine how natural processes affect distribution and interactions among marine organisms such as lobsters. Visit Bigelow's web site to learn more.

Overview of Climate Change for High School Teachers A two-day professional development course will be offered by The Community College of Baltimore County on June 29 - 30, 2004. This course, titled "Overview of Climate Change for High School Teachers", examines the scientific evidence for climate change and considers how such changes might impact natural and human systems. Trends in energy use, international and U.S. policy developments, and emerging technologies, will also be discussed. Classroom methods and materials for understanding and researching climate change issues will be presented and assessed. On January 15, 2004, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center reported that 2003 tied 2002 as the second warmest year. In December 2003, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) officially stated that human activities are increasingly altering the Earth's climate. The AGU now joins the American Meteorological Society, the National Research Council, the World Meteorological Society and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in stating that human activities are altering the chemistry of the atmosphere resulting in a warming of the lower atmosphere. Yet, despite the importance of climate change for the next generation, curricula and educational materials on the subject are limited. This course provides Maryland high school teachers with an opportunity to gain a basic understanding of climate change science as well, learn about existing educational resources, and integrate climate change education with state core learning goals.

On "Arbor Day", Friday, April 25th, a Memorial Grove to honor the astronauts of the space shuttle "Columbia" will be planted near Chabot's main entrance. The following day, Saturday, April 26th, Chabot will sponsor a full day of environmentally related activities that include "Particulates Matter!"— a study of the Bay Area's air in a project co-sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. "A living memorial is the perfect way to honor our fallen astronauts and also, show how we honor the earth they served so well," said Chabot Executive Director Alexandra Barnett. The "Columbia" Memorial Planting, sponsored in part by the City of Oakland, will begin at 11:30am and include remarks by Barnett, representatives from the US Forest Service, NASA, the Israeli Consulate, and the Oakland City Council. Children from the Ecology Club at Joaquin Miller Elementary School will help plant the seven ‘Prairie Fire' Flowering Crabapple trees. This year marks the 20th anniversary that the City of Oakland has been recognized as an official "Tree City USA" by the National Arbor Day Association and celebrates Arbor Day on the last Friday in April. http://www.kapili.com/
KAPILI.COM is starting its second year as a subscription site. We are proud of the additions and growth of the site over the past year. We now have over three hundred science tutorials and two hundred activities available. Since the launch of the site, we have more than tripled the total amount of content available to our subscribers. We are continuing our mission to create a protected environment where we can build all types of new and informative content.
Responding to subscriber feedback, we have been adding as much science content as possible. The tutorials are now broken into general, life, earth, space, and physical science sections. Members can print the tutorials for use offline or in classrooms. Our library continues to grow with a glossary of over 3,000 entries and a species database with over 1,000 animals and plants. As we travel the world, we will constantly be adding to these resources.
At the start of the new school year, we found ourselves upgrading our old activities and building dozens of new ones. Not only do we have flash activities that support our tutorials, we have virtual tours and slideshows from around the world. Our downloads include basic arithmetic workbooks, desktop patterns, and clip art that members can use in classrooms or for school projects.
We have no plans to slow down after such a successful year. We have many new expeditions, hundreds of tutorials, and activities in our current production schedule. As always, if we receive a specific request from a member, we always try to add new content that will help them out.
