RILEY URGES STUDENTS TO TAKE TOUGHER COURSES: CHALLENGES SCHOOLS AND STATES TO RAISE ACADEMIC, TESTING AND TEACHING STANDARDS IN MATH AND SCIENCE
Responding to results of an international study, U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today said America must dramatically accelerate and fundamentally change its efforts to improve math and science achievement for its students to rank among the top performing students internationally. According to the Third International Math and Science Study (TIMSS), released today by the Education Department's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), U.S. 12th graders outperformed only two (Cyprus and South Africa) of the 21 participating countries in math and science. Asian countries chose not to participate in the TIMSS 12th-grade study. U.S. students' scores in science were not significantly different from those of seven other countries, including Italy, Germany, France and the Russian Federation; in math their scores were similar to those of four other countries, including Italy and the Russian Federation. "This is unacceptable, and it absolutely confirms what the president and I have been saying, that academic standards must be raised dramatically across America," Riley said. "The standards of many state assessments in math are far lower than national and international standards of excellence; too many science and math teachers are teaching out-of-field; and far too few high school seniors have taken physics, trigonometry, calculus and advanced placement courses."

Undergraduate Studies in Education
FACULTY MEMBERS
The Department of Undergraduate Studies in Education prepares students for careers as teachers by focusing on courses meant to enhance skills, knowledge and attitudes which support effective teaching. Four elements characterize the Faculty's programs:
(i) A foundation in liberal studies considered likely to foster the intellectual curiosity, creativity, and broad knowledge necessary for effective teaching.
ii) The study of human learning and development, within a social and cultural context and in relation to instructional and management techniques within educational settings.
iii) The study of curriculum and methods of instruction.
iv) The opportunity to observe effective teaching and to apply and develop instructional approaches in classroom settings through supervised student teaching.

Programs, Specializations and Teachables
Programs are divided according to the age and grade level at which the student intends to teach as follows:
Primary-Junior (Kindergarten to Grade 6). Teachers at this level must be prepared to teach students all subjects so programs include courses in a variety of subjects taught in the elementary school. No specific teachable is required.

Our faculty . Washington University is a top ranked research institution attracting intelligent students and an outstanding faculty. Engineering professors conducting state-of-the-art research also teach undergraduate and graduate classes. This creates a vibrant intellectual atmosphere where can students stay on top of the latest technological advances. Of our 193 engineering faculty members 69 are editors of professional journals and 15 have been named National Young Investigators. Our faculty also includes members of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine. They have over 130 patents and have established more than 17 start-up companies during the past six years.
Our Students . Our undergraduates, some 1100 students, come from 50 states and 32 foreign countries. Over 100 of them participate in the co-op program each year and earn an average salary of $14.75 per hour. At Washington University our undergraduates conduct research and do meaningful investigations that build their interests and expand their knowledge. Our 581 graduate students can earn Masters and Doctorate degrees in various programs through our nine academic departments.

Chemical Engineering
The Department has as its vision to be recognized internationally as one of the 25 leading academic chemical engineering departments in the U.S. by the turn of the century. We plan to fulfill this vision through innovative education, well-trained graduates, quality research, respected faculty, and leadership involving societal and industrial problems as they relate to chemical engineering.
Our undergraduate education mission is to teach chemical engineering principles and their application in an inspired learning environment and to prepare students for chemical engineering careers. In so doing, we will develop in our students the capability to think critically and analytically, to communicate their thoughts clearly, and to conduct themselves in a professional manner. We will achieve this mission by maintaining our high teaching standards, by applying chemical engineering principles to new areas, by maintaining and expanding high quality laboratory experience, and by adapting the curriculum to incorporate emphases on the environment, process safety, and hazardous waste minimization.
Our mission in the graduate education area is to prepare advanced engineers for industrial and academic careers by helping them develop creative and critical thinking skills and by training them in the most advanced technologies and methods employed in chemical engineering. In the area of research, the Department will develop basic knowledge into technology in selected areas of social and scientific significance. To fulfill the graduate education and research missions, we are promoting more creativity and independence in research, providing more practice in communication, and exploring ways to provide more laboratory and experimental research experiences.

Programs: Certification MIT Endorsements Educator Career Services ... Degree Programs ) Master in Teaching The mission of the Master in Teaching program states “the teacher is an ethical and knowledgeable reflective decision-maker who can teach all students to function effectively in a global and pluralistic society.  Students in this full-time graduate degree program earn both a master in teaching degree and an initial teacher certification, all within four academic quarters of study.  This cohort-based program provides an opportunity to create and experience a “learning community”.  MIT students are placed in a school setting within the first two weeks of the program.  Students have multiple field experiences, all of which feature supervisory support and incorporate peer collaboration and team teaching. A significant advantage of the MIT program is that it provides teachers with the opportunity to have both the in-depth preparations of a full academic major at the undergraduate level, as well as solid preparation for professional education at the graduate level.  The MIT with special education endorsement is for those who are not currently certified teachers, but who are interested in pursuing a special education career.  Students can complete both an initial teaching certificate and the primary endorsement in special education in 6 quarters of study of which 4 quarters are full time.  This option is only available to MIT students who enter in a spring cohort.

Gee is very much an academic, and this book, although largely readable, can be tough going in patches.
He's a fan of computer games and the book extracts 36 learning principles from game playing to show us that games have much to teach us about learning.
In this he succeeds, although a good third of his principles are debatable.
I warn you now; Gee is a disciple of the semiotic movement.
This is the theoretical grounding for many of his 36 principles.
However, if you're not a follower of 'semiotic domains' or 'text-internal relationships' you can cluster this stuff under 'media literacy'.

What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy
The book is primarily a criticism of 'traditional' school-based learning methodologies, using observations of children playing video games and the author's own play sessions as representative examples of the 36 principles of good learning he describes.
He uses primarily 3d shooters and RPGs as his examples of 'good' video games (meaning that they encourage learning things about and within the world of the game).
The author defines and conceptualizes his principles of learning and contrasts it with the school-based education process, noting the vast differences between the two.
On this topic of criticism of school-based education, the author makes a strong argument.
