"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." I used this book this past summer in order to place out of College Bio I and II through a CLEP exam. Through independent study from this book and its companion CD I was able to place out in the 97th Percentile. There is a reason why this book is still continued to be used today in classrooms as it is on its sixth edition. The authors use of layout in the book is well thought out and organized. His vast use of pictures, graphs, and tables streamline with the text of the book. In addition, the c...

NIU Department of Mathematical Sciences Bachelors degrees in Mathematical Sciences at NIU
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Northern Illinois University offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. These programs prepare students with diverse career goals, and develop unique strengths and talents which are valuable in an increasingly technical society. A Mathematical Sciences degree prepares students to be innovative and imaginative in complex situations - ready for a world of challenges. A mathematics degree demonstrates many obvious career skills: attention to detail, comfort with numbers and computation, and a familiarity with standard mathematical models. Less obvious are the skills which develop during the study of higher mathematics. The student develops rigorous, logical thinking, problem-solving skills, appreciation of and familiarity with complex structures and algorithms, and the ability to learn technical, detailed, or abstract material. If you would like more information about potential applications of your mathematics degree in the job market, contact an advisor in the Department, the University's Career Counseling Office, or professional societies such as the Mathematical Association of America. The MAA web site highlights varied career stories of math students; see

Susan DeBari and Scott Linneman are the geology education faculty that act as academic advisors and mentors for future teachers in Earth Science. The pre-service teachers consist of undergraduates, post-baccalaureate students, and Masters in Teaching candidates. In Washington State, a future science teacher gets a certification to teach in secondary school, and an endorsement to teach a particular science. To teach geology, one must have an Earth Science endorsement or an Earth Science/General Science endorsement. The state requirements for these two endorsements (along with the Western courses that satisfy the requirements) can be found by clicking on the appropriate link on the endorsement web site Recruiting for undergraduate students is typically done within the geology department and at nearby community colleges. Once they are at Western, they are mentored and advised by the two geology education faculty and choose one of

Description of Major
There are several options available for a student wishing to teach in a middle or high school environment. These options include becoming a Math, English, History, or Science teacher. Focusing on a secondary education major with a concentration in any of these areas provides graduates with the skills necessary to teach secondary education. Teachers in a secondary education institution typically teach one or more of these subjects. All secondary education majors are required to complete not only education requirements but also a subject area major and courses in educational philosophy that will result in a Master of Arts in education.
Students majoring in Mathematics education are preparing themselves to teach algebra, geometry, calculus, trigonometry, and general mathematics. If one decides to major in English education he will learn to teach writing, literature and oral communication to secondary level students. As an English education major one learns a variety of critical thinking and writing skills, and typically acquires a background in drama, speech, poetry, journalism, world literature, and a broad background in British and American literature. A History education major is prepared to teach history, civics, sociology, economics, geography, anthropology, as well as various courses associated with social studies. As a Science education major, students prepare to teach biology, chemistry, earth science, general science, or physics on a secondary level.
