171. Circle Of Prevention: Networking To Prevent Family Violence In Atlantic Canada
Provides information from a network of government and community representatives in Atlantic Canada dedicated to ending family violence and woman abuse.
http://www.echo-chn.net/circle/
Background
The Circle of Prevention is a network of government and community representatives in Atlantic Canada dedicated to ending family violence and woman abuse. Since June 1998 when people in Atlantic Canada gathered to consider population health approaches to family violence prevention, a core group of community and government representatives have worked together across sectors and provinces. We have learned about ourselves and others, reflected on our principles and practices, informed others across the Atlantic Region about challenges and accomplishments in family violence prevention, identified key challenges for partnership among community and government organizations, deepened our understanding about the complexity and simplicity of family violence and woman abuse prevention, and set our priorities.
The Circle of Prevention supports progress toward ending family violence and woman abuse by:
  • increasing the means and opportunities to learn from each other across Atlantic provinces and sectors
  • developing knowledge that contributes to new approaches to family violence and woman abuse prevention
  • helping to shape public policy and service delivery through gender-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION Violence is a major public health problem in the United States today, Novello (1992). The United States has one of the highest reported homicide rates in the industrialized world, a rate 10 times higher than England and 25 times higher than Spain, Wolfgang(1986). This is a problem that is spilling over into the workplace. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (1993), homicide accounted for 17% of the 6083 fatal work injuries in 1992, more than three deaths each day in the United States. Violence is the leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in women and the first, second, or third leading cause of death for all workers depending on the area reporting, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census on Fatal Occupational Injuries (1994).

    Who We Are
    What We Do
Co/Motion Co/Motion is more than just a program, it is a philosophy of youth-led social change. We believe that young people are not the leaders of tomorrow young people are the leaders of today! Co/Motion's role is to provide the support training, guidance, and networking opportunities young people need to be successful in their efforts to promote social change. Co/Motion is a national program that helps organizations build their capacity to foster youth leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of action strategies addressing community problems. We do this by partnering with youth-led and youth-serving organizations, national service and service learning programs, schools and other national and community-based organizations, to provide training to young adults 15 to 25 in advocacy and organizing skills. Co/Motion also provides on-going support and technical assistance to help youth design projects to address community problems. View gun violence statistics in your state

    I. Background The long-term goal of this Initiative is to strengthen the capacity of anti-violence activists throughout the United States (beginning in Massachusetts) to address domestic violence and sexual abuse by training, supporting and organizing them to use human rights tools in all aspects of their work. The Initiative also aims to help build a grassroots US women's human rights movement that has strong links to the global women's movement and whose methodology can serve as a national and cross-issue model. The Initiative is specifically designed to:
  • Educate US anti-violence activists about human rights, including its history, methodology, laws, principles and uses Support US anti-violence activists to use the human rights framework to build cross-issue coalitions and to implement more effective public education, direct service, legal, advocacy, and other strategies
