107. What Is A School Psychologist?
One could think of school psychologists as general practitioners in that we have to know a lot of information about a lot of different things.
http://www.bartow.k12.ga.us/psych/whatis.htm
For decades, millions of people have been confused about the field of school psychology. Well, maybe there were just thousands of confused people. Okay, there were only three people, but they were really confused. Often, many poignant questions or comments ensue. "What is a school psychologist?" "We've already got counselors." "Boy, do we need more of you guys in the schools." "Are you going to analyze me?" Therefore, I have decided to clear up the decades of confusion about school psychologists once and for all (or at least for awhile).
School psychologists are educational specialists who use their knowledge of psychology and educational research to help confront many educational problems experienced by children, teachers, parents, and communities. We are skilled practitioners in the areas of psychoeducational assessment, childhood development, behavioral management, individual/group counseling, and consultation. Above all, we are advocates for children.
One could think of school psychologists as "general practitioners" in that we have to know a lot of information about a lot of different things. Chances are that if we do not know the answer, we know where to go to find the answer. School psychologists must continually remain apprised of many issues affecting the lives of students in our schools. School psychologists are able to address many issues such as:

Dean's Message
Here in the Graduate Psychology Program at New College of California we are pleased to offer a degree program in clinical psychology that is innovative as well as one of the best in the country. We believe that today in North America psychology is in crisis. Therefore, our approach to psychology differs from that taken by mainstream academic thought. As a result, our program trains clinicians who will remain community activists.
Knowledge can either liberate us or alienate us. Our Psychology Program provides our s tudents with knowledge of the human mind as well as its potential for helping individuals change themselves and the world. Because we believe that the epistemology and methodology of psychology should be embedded in the historical and social foundations of individual experience, our students observe and analyze this close relationship between the individual and the socio-historical in current conditions. They learn vital lessons that they c an apply in their everyday practice as therapists in training and as agents of social change.
