    Mission and Objectives
Today's school psychologists must function as effective educational consultants, intervention strategists and counselors in addition to their historical role as psychometricians. Our goal is to prepare professionals who manifest a holistic blend of theory and practice in meeting the educational advantage of today's students within the interacting contexts of their schools, families and communities. At Marist College, students interested in pursuing study towards New York State certification in school psychology have two options: an MA in School Psychology or an Advanced Certificate in School Psychology. Marist's school psychology programs focus on instruction in theory and skills associated with five roles regularly encountered by a school psychologist: facilitator in understanding human behavior; counselor; psychological/educational examiner; consultant and information specialist/intervention strategist. Following New York State Educational Department (NYSED) regulations, the academic qualifications for permanent certification as a school psychologist requires sixty-two semester hours of graduate study inclusive of a college supervised practicum experience and internship in the field of school psychology. Within the total program of preparation as a school psychologist, the candidate must complete a masters degree.

    What is School Psychology?

School psychologists apply the knowledge of psychology to the problems of education. They use specialized knowledge in areas such as assessment, learning and human relationships to facilitate, through school personnel, the learning, and growth of all children, including the exceptional. The traditional role of the school psychologist involves testing and observing children who are experiencing difficulty learning or relating in school and then working toward the improvement of the educational setting for these children. However, school psychologists also assume many alternative roles which work toward the improvement of the educational setting for all school children. They consult with teachers, parents and administrators and counsel with children. They may also offer in-service workshops or become involved in research. Careers related to School Psychology Careers in school psychology are usually in public schools or similar human service settings. School psychologists may also become licensed and enter private practice; in places such as Virginia, this may occur with a 60 semester hour master's degree program and four years of experience in the public school system. Degrees necessary to work in this field The National Association of School minimum of a 60 semester hour master's level school years of full-time study followed by an internship during the third year. The GMU Psychology Department has a M.A. in School Psychology, with a Ph.D. in applied developmental psychology.

HISTORY Welcome to The WWW School Psychology Homepage. I believe that this was the very first homepage on the Web devoted exclusively to the needs of the school psychology professional. It was originally published in late 1994 and officially unveiled as part of a workshop I conducted for the California Association of School Psychologists (CASP) in March of 1995. This document is designed to serve as a starting point for school counselors, school psychologists and other educators around the world in their efforts to locate information and resources which will help them provide optimum services to the students they serve. GENERAL INFORMATION Within this site you will find a listing of other "links" or places you can go which will provide various types of information or services. In general, the links were chosen according to the value they might hold for school counselors and psychologists but range across a wide variety of topics, interests and needs and are likely very useful to any educational professional. Please remember, however, that this page is an ever-evolving document and will likely always be under construction. I hope to be able to keep it current and as up to date as possible and would appreciate any input from users regarding changes, updates, or new additions to the links posted here.

    XIII. Graduate School In Psychology
Before discussing such topics as "Applying to Graduate School", it might be helpful to give a brief summary of just what graduate school is. Graduate school is post-graduate education, taking an average of 2 years for the Master's degree and 4-5 years total for the Ph.D. ("doctoral") degree (5-6 years in clinical or counseling psychology). There are a number of significant ways in which graduate school differs from your undergraduate experience. First, the credit-hour load will be lighter in graduate school. Nine or twelve credits, rather than 15-18, per semester is a typical graduate load. You can, however, presume that each course will demand a fair amount of time. Second, you will take psychology courses almost exclusively. Third, your professors will give you more freedom, and thus increased responsibility, regarding the entire learning process ranging from completion of assigned work (no one will nag you!), selection of courses, class attendance, etc. In a phrase, you will be expected to develop into mature, independent scholars. Fourth, class sizes will be smaller. Some seminar courses will have as few as four students, in which each is expected to master a special topic and "teach" his or her fellow students. In lecture courses, the professor will often expect you to master the textbook, while he or she talks about related material. In addition, scholarly work in the library is often expected. Finally, you will probably experience a closer bond between yourself, fellow students, and your professors due to the preceding points and also to the smaller student/faculty ratio. Many people find that the tight psychological and social bonds formed in graduate school remain throughout their lives.
