SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL TRAVEL DATABASE Welcome to the DfT database of classroom materials relating to sustainable travel. The database is a catalogue of information on teaching and other relevant resources relating to encouraging greater use of walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing for school journeys. The resources contained in the database are primarily concerned with sustainable travel, but some also address issues of road safety. If you are interested specifically in road safety materials, we suggest you look at the ROSALIND database (information about ROSALIND can be found using this site.) To search for classroom resources on a range of issues, including other sustainability topics, go to the Learning Resource Index on the National Grid for Learning site Tell us your views Continue The DfT is not responsible for the contents or reliability of the linked web sites and does not necessarily endorse the views expressed within them. Non Graphic Version Welcome to the FREE teaching resource for primary school teachers
This site provides you with lesson plans and worksheets for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. These have all been written by educational professionals. They are designed to meet curriculum targets in each subject but also to provide teachers with a forum to discuss aspects of road safety, particularly on the school journey. This website and its contents have been developed in consultation with teachers. We will be perfecting the navigation route and lesson plans over the next few months. In order to teach some of the lesson plans, you will need to pre-order specific resources . Each lesson plan will state whether there is a need to order resources before teaching the lesson. The required resources will be:
  • A1 Laminated posters (TINF/631x) Wall Friezes (TINF/635A,B, C,D) 20 Polypropylene flashcards (TINF/538)
Each of them may be ordered from: DFT Free Literature

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCCESSFUL INITIATIVES
The most successful reform initiatives are collaborations between parents and schools. Typically, a group of local institutions, sometimes with the aid of foundation funds, hires an organizerpossibly from an organization like the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF)to initiate and facilitate the reform process. Through conversations with many individuals and groups, the organizer helps to identify a core organizing team of 8-15 parents and educators that usually coordinates the work of the others involved. Such collaborative initiatives share certain characteristics, described below.
VIEWING THE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY AS AN ECOLOGY
Projects also work to make the values, cultures, and languages of the various components of a child's ecologyhome, school, and neighborhoodmore continuous. In the Educational and Community Change Project (ECC) in Arizona (which joined forces with a local IAF organization), the staff altered the curriculum of the project's schools so that economically poor Latino and Native American parents and students join together with middle-class teachers of diverse ethnic backgrounds to study issues of concern to the community. Their joint inquiry permits the worlds of the school, home, and neighborhood to come together (Heckman, 1996a; Lewis, 1997).

Thomson Financial have offered access to their celebrated VentureEconomics database of venture capital firms, their investments and their funds to members of PERC. A valuable grant from the Cass Research Committee helped add a new cash flow series component to this data and doctoral students have cleaned sections of the data for academic use, creating a large panel dataset in the biotech domain covering UK, US and Germany. This data is available (with due accreditation to Thomson) to current and future members of PERC for research purposes. It is expected that this will be increasingly supplemented by ad hoc surveys of the VC/PE community.

The Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement.
METHODOLOGY
Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.

The School-within-a-School Model. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC In an age of reform and restructuring, educators are seeking new models to improve their schools. One approach is to replicate the qualities, and hopefully the advantages, of a small school by creating a "school-within-a-school." This approach establishes within the school a smaller educational unit with a separate educational program, its own staff and students, and its own budget. Several cities, including New York City, Philadelphia, and Chicago, have experimented with this as a method for downsizing (Raywid, 1995). This Digest briefly introduces the school-within-a-school concept, summarizes existing research on school-within-a-school models, and reviews some of the advantages and disadvantages.
DOWNSIZING AND THE SCHOOL-WITHIN-A-SCHOOL MODEL
A school-within-a-school is a separate and autonomous unit formally authorized by the board of education and/or superintendent. It plans and runs its own program, has its own staff and students, and receives its own separate budget. Although it must negotiate the use of common space (gym, auditorium, playground) with a host school, and defer to the building principal on matters of safety and building operation, the school-within-a-school reports to a district official instead of being responsible to the building principal. Both its teachers and students are affiliated with the school-within-a-school as a matter of choice (p. 21).

Research Education ... Home
The Center for Integrative Medicine has developed, and regularly updates, two bibliographic databases: The Arthritis and Complementary Medicine Database (ARCAM) and the Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Pain Database (CAMPAIN). These databases are compiled from regular, comprehensive electronic and hand searches of scientific literature sources world-wide. In addition, we maintain the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Field Registry of Randomized Controlled Trials. All three databases are searchable on our site. Development of these databases has been supported by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. How to Search the Databases The search engine, which is the method used to search the database, was designed to allow users with all levels of expertise to quickly search the database for the information they desire. For example, to search for scientific articles pertaining to Acupuncture, the user would type "Acupuncture" in the term box and select the data field that he or she wished to search. Searchable data fields include: authors, keywords, periodical, year, and title. Searches can also be conducted searching all indexed fields and all non-indexed fields. Searchers can combine up to eight terms using Boolean search terms to make searches more specific. For more information on conducting searches click on Help button on the Reference Web Poster tool bar.
