School Bus Safety School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn’t occur in a crash, but as the students were entering and exiting the bus. Take a little time to check out some important rules you should know about school bus safety. At the Bus Stop... Be sure to get to the bus stop in plenty of time. Five minutes before the bus comes is plenty of time to talk with your friends and be there in time for the bus. If you leave too late, you will have to rush. It is much easier to trip and fall when you are rushing. Behave yourself at the bus stop. You won’t be safe from traffic unless you stand way back from the curb, and don’t push or wrestle with your friends. Line up nicely when the bus comes. Be sure to listen to any adults supervising at the bus stop. It’s OK to tell a parent or a bus driver if someone is bothering you at the bus stop or while you’re on the school bus. We can only help if we know. Getting on or off the Bus...

School Bus Safety
What You Should Know as a Motorist . . .
You must drive with extra care whenever you see a school bus in front of you or coming towards you. If a school bus flashes its red lights,
TRAFFIC IN BOTH DIRECTIONS MUST STOP.
You should remind your children to be extra careful when getting on and off the school bus. Have them take a second look for traffic before crossing the road. Also remind your children to follow the school bus safety rules taught at school. Encourage them to help the driver keep his or her attention on road safety. They can do this by behaving as quietly as possible and remaining seated until the bus has come to a complete stop.

School Bus Stopping Law
The law applies everywhere regardless of the posted speed limit on highway, city, town or village roads.

Pupil Transportation - Your Child and School Bus Safety
When parents put their child on the school bus it often invokes mixed feelings. As parents, you can relax and be assured that you are putting your child in the hands of trained professionals who care about your child. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says, "School buses are the safest form of ground transportation."* Nationwide, each year, there are approximately 450,000 school buses transporting nearly 24 million children, more than 4 billion miles. Tragically on an average there are 10 fatalities per year to students on school buses in the United States. Fortunately, in Oregon there has not been a student fatality on a school bus since 1976. This is not by accident. In Oregon, school buses must meet a certain set of specifications. Each driver must meet and maintain driver qualifications, including ongoing training. Parents often ask, "Why aren't there seatbelts on school buses?" By design, not as a financial decision, there are no belt systems on school buses. It should be noted that the only type of belt system that could be installed in a school bus is a lap belt, not the lap/shoulder belt systems that are available in passenger motor vehicles. There are serious questions about the ability of a lap belt to provide crash protection to children in any type of motor vehicle, including school buses. In school buses children are protected by the safety compartment they ride in, this is called "compartmentalization". One of the major benefits of compartmentalization is that it is a passive form of crash protection. Neither the driver nor the student has to assure that the lap belt is placed properly across the student's lower torso. The design also fits a wide variety of weights, heights, ages, and seating positions.

Walking to and from Bus Stops
  • Go directly from the bus stop. Plan the safest route with the fewest streets to cross. If possible cross streets and corners, using crosswalks if available. Look in all directions before crossing and when safe walk across the street. Always obey traffic signals. Watch for vehicles that might be making a turn. Do not dart from between parked cars or shrubbery. Never accept a ride from a stranger. If possible, face traffic when walking on roads without sidewalks and always use caution. Be extra careful during times of sunrise and sunset, bad weather and during darkness (wear white clothing or something reflective). Leave home early enough so you don't have to run.

School Bus Safety ATU Position on the Use of Vans for School Transportation Services Every day, 24 million children are transported to school on public school buses. While school buses are generally considered to be the safest motor vehicles on the highways, we must do more to ensure that our children make it to and from school safely. In addition to aging bus fleets, the privatization of services and a shortage of qualified drivers, which have eroded the safety and quality of services in the school bus industry, safety is being further compromised by the efforts of school districts to bypass federal, state and local safety requirements by using passenger vans and minivans in place of school buses. These vans do not offer the same safety benefits as school buses, which were designed to provide the maximum occupant protection. In addition, the drivers of the vans are not required to possess a Commercial Drivers License and do not receive specialized driver training, a background check, a physical, drug and alcohol testing, or a driver record check. The ATU supports a prohibition against the use of vans and minivans that do not meet Federal safety standards for school buses to transport children to and from school and school-related activities.

Statistics School buses are the safest form of highway transportation. There are about 440,000 public school buses that travel approximately 5 billion miles each year. Each day school buses carry around 20 million students to school and school-related events. (Accident Facts 1996, National Safety Council) In 1996, 10 school bus occupants were killed in crashes (2 drivers, 8 passengers). In 1996, 23 pedestrians were killed in school bus-related crashes. About two-thirds of school bus-related fatalities happen outside the bus. For the past 11 years, an average of 35 school-age children died in school bus-related traffic crashes each year (9 school bus occupants and 26 pedestrians). Recent studies in Florida and Illinois found almost 10,000 incidents (per day per state) of motorists illegally passing stopped school buses that were loading or unloading children. In Florida, 4.4 percent of the vehicles passed the school bus on the door side of the bus. Why No Safety Belts?

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY! Although school buses are the safest form of highway transportation, approximately ten children die every year in a school bus accident. And many other children are injured. Below are some facts and a school bus safety guide.
    • School buses are the safest form of highway transportation. The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the school bus. Pedestrian fatalities (while loading and unloading school buses) account for approximately three times as many school bus-related fatalities, when compared to school bus occupant fatalities. The loading and unloading area is called the “Danger Zone” The “Danger Zone” is the area on all sides of the bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver (ten feet in front of the bus where the driver may be too high to see a child, ten feet on either side of the bus where a child may be in the driver’s blind spot, and the area behind the school bus). Half of the pedestrian fatalities in school bus-related crashes are children between 5 and 7 years old.

The National Safety Council, in a 1996 study, determined school buses to be the safest form of transportation available. The study found the risk of death to a passenger traveling in a school bus to be 172 times less than someone traveling in an automobile. Thomas Built Buses takes great pride in helping achieve the excellent safety record that school buses boast. A full one-third of all students who ride school buses each day ride a Thomas. Thomas was the first to introduce steel-framed buses and the first to engineer steel structural supports well below the school bus floor to strengthen the skirt area. The bus ride to and from school is an integral part of a child's school day. Even children who do not use the bus to get to and from school will probably ride a school bus at some point throughout the year. Whether they are on a ride to school, a field trip or a sporting event, all children should be familiar with the safety rules relating to school buses.
