STRATEGIC SCHOOL TO WORK PROJECT: School to Work in Rural and Remote Areas
The project piloted a number of models of vocational learning in rural areas, including general vocational, enterprise and career education, accredited vocational education and training, work experience, structured workplace learning, part-time New Apprenticeships and school based community enterprises. This innovative project was undertaken by the Queensland Department of Education in partnership with the Education Departments of the Northern Territory (NT) and Western Australia (WA). South Australia (SA) Department of Education, Training and Employment acted as a critical adviser on project development and implementation issues. The pilots explored issues relating to culturally relevant curriculum and human resources; appropriate teaching and learning strategies, including use of appropriate distance and on-line learning; professional development needs for teachers and community members; implementation of sustainable and cost effective technologies; school and community resource and local infrastructure (particularly transport) constraints in establishing on-going partnerships between schools, local employers, training providers and the wider community and work-based outcomes for students. A particular target group of the project was indigenous young people.
