Applying for a PhD
"A PhD thesis shall be a substantial and original contribution to scholarship, for example through the discovery of knowledge, the formulation of theories or the innovative re-interpretation of known data and established ideas." The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is a supervised research degree. A PhD thesis will demonstrate (in the context of a substantial and original contribution) mastery of the subject of concern and well as a furthering of understanding in that field of knowledge. A PhD programme consists of a research project mutually agreed upon by a student, supervisor, Head of Department and the Board of the Postgraduate Research School. The PhD requires the development and implementation of a rigorous research plan, based on a comprehensive understanding of the relevant literature and the need for answers to questions posed in that literature or as the result of a new theory. The thesis arising from the research should show a candidate's ability to document and interpret results, to formulate theories and to discuss the results in the light of the current literature to a level of competence required in published materials. If a department at UWA can provide appropriate supervision, facilities and resources for a research project in a particular field and the Board agrees that an appropriate research topic in that area can be developed then, subject to a candidate satisfying the eligibility requirements, an application for a place in the PhD programme can be made. There are usually no examinable coursework components to a PhD.

Include a self-addressed stamped envelope when you request application forms by mail. If you can get a form or routine information by telephone or on the web, do so, and save valuable time.
Read the Fine Print
As soon as you receive the application, read the instructions carefully. Pay attention to the information required. If the application requires a transcript from all schools you have attended, request this information as soon as possible. After a few weeks have passed, call the schools to be sure that the transcripts have been sent to the proper addresses. If by chance you have to hand-deliver a transcript, do not tamper with the seal; the transcript may not be accepted if you do.
The Reasons Most Applications Come With a Phone Number
If you find that some instructions on an application are unclear, seek advice either from the scholarship provider, high school guidance counselor or a financial aid advisor. Don’t be afraid to call the scholarship provider! Undoubtedly, you’re one of many asking the same question!

    Personal Statements and Essays
Every fellowship or graduate school application requires a statement that asks, in one way or another, for the candidate to describe their academic or other interests. This personal statement is your introduction to the selection committee. An outstanding personal statement will not win you a scholarship, but a poorly prepared one can deny you the chance to be considered as a finalist. Because personal statements are personal, there is not one format or approach that will work well for everyone. They are also short 1,000 words or less so you should identify the three or four most important points that you want to develop. Other parts of your application (including letters of recommendation) can present other important information. Use your personal statement to say what only you can say because it is what is most important to you. The essay is an exercise in self-reflection. To do this well requires many drafts, revisions, and false starts. Think about the questions posed in

    http://www.aucegypt.edu/students/sap/
Study Abroad and Non-degree Each year, students from dozens of college and universities across North America and around the world enroll at AUC for one or more terms, usually during the third or junior year. Applicants for Study Abroad must be enrolled in a program of study at another college or university and be recommended by their home institutions. Study Abroad students may attend AUC for no more than two semesters and a summer session. AUC's Study Abroad program is one of direct enrollment, meaning that students select courses from general undergraduate listings and are not limited to a fixed set of courses. Since AUC is accredited in the U.S. as well as in Egypt, students from U.S. universities are usually able to transfer AUC credits to their home institutions. Study abroad applicants are advised to plan selection of courses with their academic advisors or registrars before applying to AUC To apply for full-time Intensive Arabic study, follow
