SOP Application Tips Obtaining Information Include a self-addressed stamped envelope when you request application forms and information about scholarships by mail. However, if you can get a form or routine information by telephone, do so. The time saved is worth the cost of a phone call, even if it is long distance. Read the Fine Print As soon as you receive the application, read the instructions carefully. Pay attention to the information required. If the application requires a transcript from all schools you have attended, request this information as soon as possible. After a few weeks have passed, call the schools to be sure that the transcripts have been sent to the proper address. If by chance you have to hand deliver a transcript, do not tamper with the seal. If the seal looks tampered with, the transcript may not be accepted. The Reason Most Applications Come With a Phone Number If you find that some instructions on an application are unclear, seek advice either from the scholarship provider, the Scholarship Opportunities Program office in 1200 Student Services II, an instructor, or an academic counselor. Understand that when you call the office that the application came from and ask questions, many others probably had the same questions. Letters of Recommendation Practice Makes Perfect If essays or statements of purpose are asked for (or paragraph-long answers to particular questions), rework them over a series of drafts until they are as well written as you can make them. A good essay or answerone that is concise, well organized, smoothly written, interesting, distinctive, and without cliches or errorsmay take many drafts to produce. Show your application to a T.A., instructor, counselor at the Scholarship Opportunities Program, or anyone else who can give good criticism. Leave time for this rewriting and consultation.

Winning the Scholarship Award
Expert Advice provided by Scholarship Experts

Searching for and finding scholarships is only the first half of the process. You still need to apply for each scholarship you are trying to win. Applying for scholarships can be time consuming and takes dedication and motivation. But the thousands of dollars you could receive makes the effort worthwhile. Below are some hints to help you apply for and win scholarships. Be proactive.
No one is going to track you down to give you a scholarship; you need to do the legwork yourself. So when you find awards with eligibility criteria that you can meet, contact the provider and request a scholarship application packet. Whether you have to request the application via email, phone or by sending in a self-addressed stamped envelope, do it. There's just no other way to get the ball rolling than to be proactive and assertive in requesting information for yourself. Be timely.

I have seen too many great students and potential winners talk themselvesout of applying. scholarships mean both fame and money. Get your share.
    http://www.utpress.utoronto.ca/howell/chap04.html
    Chapter 4
    Applying for awards
    In this chapter:
    Dos and Don'ts
    Requesting letters of recommendation
    Sample questions
Interviews ... Personal student record Once you have decided to apply for a scholarship the real work begins. Since you get only one chance to make a first impression, it is critical that you spend some time on your application. You will find the personal student record in this chapter useful for organizing all your information. Fill out the form carefully and then let your parents and your scholarship coach take a look at it to be sure that you haven't missed anything. Nearly all of the universities and most of the colleges in Ontario have prestigious scholarships that require special attention. Application forms for these are sent out to high school principals or guidance departments each year with the instruction that only one candidate should be chosen from each school. The reason for this limitation is to ensure that only the very best students will be considered for these awards. Most of the big scholarships have some kind of set application procedure and a deadline. If you have done some research you should know the scholarships for which you are eligible. Your next move is to work through the requirements carefully. Resist the temptation to scribble down one copy and send it off. If this is your attitude, you might as well not bother wasting the postage. This is especially true if you have been asked to be the candidate for your school. If you don't really want to put in the time, then decline the honour and let someone else apply for the scholarship. I get more than a little angry when I ask a student to represent the school and then am told too late that he or she wasn't really interested and didn't complete the application. Not only does that attitude let the school down, it selfishly wastes an opportunity that could have gone to someone else.

Tips on Locating and Applying for Scholarships*
Locating Scholarships The search for a scholarship should be understood as a process, one which requires an amount of devoted time. Identifying scholarships appropriate for you, from among the thousands of available scholarships, can be both rewarding and frustrating. A key element of the search is to allow yourself sufficient time to review the range of scholarships that exist and to select from among them those awards that most closely match your background, interests and abilities. The easiest way to begin a scholarship search is to inspect the awards listed on the Queens College Scholarship webpage. These scholarships have all been reviewed by the Office of Honors and Scholarships and are largely appropriate for Queens College students, given the range of programs and majors offered by the college. Using the Website There are two ways to search the Honors and Scholarships website. By Keyword Search.

    THINKING ABOUT
    ART HISTORY
Because fewer high schools offer AP art history courses than AP studio courses, not many prospective students enter Davidson intending to be art history majors. However, many first- and second-year students who prefer learning about art to making it fulfill their fine arts requirement by choosing one of the six to eight art history offerings available each semester. Students in all disciplines benefit from experiencing the visual images that connect them to the history and culture of their world, and each year about a dozen students declare an art major with an emphsis in art history.
    OR...
    STUDIO ART
Many prospective students who want to become future artists ask about the advantages of attending a liberal arts college rather than an art school for their undergraduate degree. From Davidson's viewpoint, the advantages are a more stimulating environment and a multi-disciplinary approach, both of which provide a wider world view and a deeper understanding of art within its historical context, as well as broader career perspectives and opportunities.
