Common Online and Work at Home Scams
Online scams and work at home scams prey on those wanting easy money with no skills or experience required. Are they legit? Closely examine any offers that promise or guarantee income from your computer or a work at home environment.
You've heard it before If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Unfortunately, many people send their money before knowing anything about the so-called "job" and that's exactly how these scammers want it. You'd be well advised to research any company BEFORE you give them any money or a credit card number.
Try typing in the company name followed by the word "thread" or "opinion" in a search engine. That may bring up some great forum discussions on that particular company, good or bad.
While there is an abundance of online and work at home scams out there, don't be afraid of every opportunity. There are many great opportunities for you to take advantage of. You may think that every one is a fraud and overlook a good, legitimate opportunity.

PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS AGAINST SCHEMES, SCAMS AND FRAUD
AUBURN, JAN. 29-Every year businesses lose millions of dollars to con games and fast-talking promoters through a variety of schemes. Using common sense in all your business dealings can help protect you from schemers, says Georgia Aycock, Extension resource management specialist with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Not all strange sales or promotions represent schemes against businesses, but it's important to ask questions of unfamiliar service or sales personnel, telephone promoters or charity appeals. A business that gathers all the facts should be able to separate the scheme from the honest transaction. If you are in doubt about a business proposition, the Better Business Bureau provides the following suggestions:
  • Refuse to make commitments with unknown persons, especially over the telephone or internet. Ask that all advertising propositions, charitable appeals, requests for biographical information and sales pitches of any type be made in writing.
  • When dealing with publications, insist on verifiable circulation figures, details of publication, dates, names ofpublishers, number of paid subscribers, and sample copies.

Get-rich-quick opportunities can be disastrous Have you ever received an unsolicited e-mail, fax, or letter from a Nigerian telling you that he wants to give you a large sum of money in exchange for your help? If so, you're not alone. "Last year, the Nigerian money offer was No. 7 on our Internet fraud list and No. 10 on our telemarketing scam list," says Holly Anderson, director of communications at the National Consumer League (NCL). "In one case, a consumer was told that an individual in Nigeria needed to move $52 million out of the country [by transferring the money into his account]. For providing assistance, [the consumer] would receive 30%, but he needed to supply a personal bank account number and meet the offering party [in person] for a discussion about the funds." Fortunately, the consumer contacted the NCL, which intervened and identified the offer as a hoax. But some people are victimized. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that biz-op fraud is the fastest-growing fraud in the United States. Plus, the NCL reported that victims of wealth-building scams lost an average of $1,425 in 2000, up from $975 in 1999. They also found that consumers taking the bait of deceptive offerings through e-mails and Websites lost, on average, $412 in 2000, up from $310 in 1999.

    Common Scams and Fraud
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true. Swindlers and con artists can be very well-dressed, flattering, and persuasive. They will say or promise anything to get your money. Always check identification of strangers. Verify with their company or agency that they are legitimate. Contact the company using your phone book, not some number they hand you. Trust your skepticism, particularly if you are approached with one of the following propositions. "Free" Prize Offerings You are offered a "free" prize, but to claim it must provide a "deposit" or credit card number, or buy something, or attend a high-pressure sales presentation. Generally the prize, if there is one, has little or no value. Bogus Travel Packages "Free" or unbelievably cheap vacations may be an outright swindle, or include massive hidden costs (one-way airfare, etc.). The total cost may be twice what you were led to believe. Always book with a reputable company. Investment Swindles A "get rich quick" scheme promises high returns with little or no risk. Typically it will feature some "inside" deal on some exotic commodity such as gemstones, rare coins, oil and gas leases, precious metals, or art. The only ones who will get rich quick here are the swindlers, on your money.

Last Updated: 28 June 2003 "Mike Aba", "Obi Azuka", and "Peter Coal" are the fake names used by a dumb Nigerian criminal who tried to defraud me. As soon as I read the "DEAR FRIEND" of the first e-mail, I knew it was a scam, but for fun I decided to mislead the criminal into believing that I was falling for his scam. You can read the exchange of e-mails following. This type of fraud is known as the Nigerian Fee scam. In this fraud, the criminal sends you an unsolicited message claiming to have millions of dollars, but he needs your help to secure it, and for your efforts, he will give you a large percentage of it. Unfortunately, gullible people do fall for this scam. Hopefully this page will alert more people and make criminals like "Mike" less successful. More information about the Nigerian Fee scam can be found here: Or read on to discover what a dumb con-artist "Mike Aba" is... He seems to be confused about his name. First he says, "I AM PETER COAL, I REPRESENT...", but he ends the message with "MIKE ABA". Actually, "Mike" is such an incompetent scammer that he sent me 2 copies of the above e-mail with 2 different names, one from "OBI AZUKA, obiazuka@mail.com" and the other from "MIKE ABA, mikeaba@mail.com", and both with "I AM PETER COAL".

Scams and fraud have weaved their way into everyday lives
    BY CATHERINE FITZPATRICK
    Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Trust me. Give me your credit card number, the keys to your apartment, your life savings. Let me hold your baby a moment. Smooth as honey, believable as a best friend, con artists scam thousands of victims each year, hapless "marks" who have no idea they're being manipulated by masters, much less how. By one author's tally, people lie an average of 200 times a day. Mostly, it's no big deal. But for the liar who has perfected the art of fake self-portraits, today's laser-paced, stress-soaked world is the perfect canvas. "I am convinced most people don't realize the impact fraud has on their daily lives, or how easy we've made it for others to deceive us," said retired Milwaukee police Detective Dennis Marlock, an expert in fraud and con investigations. "It is, without a doubt, the No. 1 crime in America in terms of frequency." Those who spin elaborate webs of deceit rake in billions each year. But sometimes the victim's loss is far more dear than money.

But there are plenty of other things the state could do to improve traffic safety. Little things like ticket the jackasses who slam on their brakes in front of you and turn without using their signal. Or the people who fail to yield the right of way and pull out in front of you. Or make the property owners cut back brush that obscures intersections on county highways. Or install traffic control devices where they are so sorely needed.
