Saudi Arabia Introduction Top of Page Background: In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year. A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns. Saudi Arabia's government has blocked websites giving information to lesbian and gay people within the country once again, despite agreeing to free up its censorship last year.
The government, which oversees one of the most oppressive regimes in the world, had previously received complaints when it blocked gaymiddleeast.com (GME), a website devoted to lesbian and gay people in the region, in June last year.
After complaints, the government agreed to allow people within the country to view the website in July. They released no statement at the time, but users found they could access the website after a month of complaining.
However, it has emerged today that the government has not only blocked GME, but also other international gay websites, including Gay.com. The GME says it does not know when these sites were blocked by the government.

Chief Engineer of the Saudi Government Railroad In 1947, the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO) was trying to expand at a very rapid rate. Crude oil production was over 100,000 barrels/day and was programmed to reach 200,000 barrels/day as soon as possible. The main obstacle to expansion was the problem of offloading required material and moving it to required sites. Cargo vessels were offloaded to barges, which were then towed to Ras Tanura or Al Khobar for handling. At the time, there were no roads in El Hasa province.

    By Hooman Peimani
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal visited Washington on Wednesday to ask officially for the chapter's declassification as requested in a submitted letter of Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia while filling for his ill brother, King Fahd. The Saudis made the request on the ground of their need to respond to the accusations and thereby clear their name. Reportedly, the Bush administration announced its decision not to declassify the chapter before the arranged meeting between the Saudi official and the US president.
Bush turned down the request on the ground that it would undermine an investigation into the terrorist attacks. "It makes no sense to declassify when we've got an ongoing investigation," he said, adding, "That could jeopardize that investigation." Bush also implicitly rejected the chapter's declassification indefinitely by questioning the wisdom of doing so as long as the open-ended "war on terror" continued. Thus, "it made no sense to declassify during the war on terror, because it would help the enemy if they knew our sources and methods".

SAUDI ARABIA Arms Sales Tables Country Profile Background Information Arms Sales Tables Country Profile Saudi Arabia is America’s top customer. Since 1990, the U.S. government, through the Pentagon’s arms export program, has arranged for the delivery of more than $39.6 billion in foreign military sales to Saudi Arabia, and an additional $394 million worth of arms were delivered to the Saudi regime through the State Department’s direct commercial sales program during that same period. (Foreign Military and Construction Sales and Direct Commercial Sales are recorded and published by the Dept. of Defense in Foreign Military Sales, Foreign Military Construction Sales and Military Assistance Facts ; the most current online edition includes information through FY 1999.) Oil rich Saudi Arabia is a cash-paying customer. It receives no U.S. military assistance to finance these purchases, although it does demand that about 35 percent of all major contracts be "offset"-that is, economic benefits equaling 35 percent of the arms contract value must be steered back to the Saudi economy. (Check out the Offsets Monitoring Project for more information on this phenomenon.)

Terrorism Déjà Vu in Saudi Arabia
by Jacob G. Hornberger May 14, 2003 During the 1980s, Iraqi president Saddam Hussein was a friend and ally of the U.S. government, even to the extent that our own government authorized the delivery of weapons of mass destruction to him so that he could use them against the Iranian people. Then, after signaling no opposition to Saddam’s plan to invade Kuwait, U.S. officials turned on him once he initiated his invasion in 1991. After the U.S. intervention successfully expelled Saddam’s forces from Kuwait, President George H.W. Bush declared victory and, amidst tremendous military fanfare, claimed that the war was over. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The Persian Gulf War actually began the long decade of the 1990’s (and afterward) in which U.S. officials, along with the American masses in whom they continued to engender tremendous fear, became increasingly obsessed with the need to “get Saddam.” There were, for example, the

America and its 'friend' Saudi Arabia
    By Stephen Zunes
(Posted with permission from Foreign Policy in Focus
The terrorist bombings that struck Saudi Arabia on May 12 have raised a number of serious questions regarding US security interests in the Middle East. First of all, they underscore the concern expressed by many independent strategic analysts that the United States has been squandering its intelligence and military resources toward Iraq - which had nothing to do with al-Qaeda and posed no direct danger to the US - and not toward al-Qaeda itself, which is the real threat.
More important, however, it raises concerns about whether US interests have been enhanced or threatened by the cozy US relationship with Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has traditionally been the most important US ally in the Arab or Islamic world. It is run exclusively by a royal family that allows neither public dissent nor an independent press. Those who dare challenge the regime or its policies are punished severely. There is no constitution, there are no political parties, and there is no legislature. It was under such an environment of repression that Osama bin Laden and most of his followers first emerged.
