The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - Geography The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia covers an area of approximately 865,000 square miles (2,150,000 square kilometers). It is bounded on the north by Iraq and Jordan ; on the east by Kuwait, the Arabian Gulf, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates; on the south by the Sultanate of Oman and Yemen; and on the west by the Red Sea Saudi Arabia can be divided into six provinces, which are geographically distinct:
  • In the west, the Hejaz is composed of hills and sometimes wide coastal plain. The western slopes of these hills drop sharply towards the sea. The more gentle eastern slopes have oases, which provide water for agriculture and the villages of the sea. The province of the Asir is located in the southwestern region of the Kingdom. It is made of higher mountains and the Tihaman, an important coastal plain. This plain is extensively terraced and makes the Asir the most productive agricultural region of Saudi Arabia.

    73. FAQ Geography
Q Is saudi arabia all one big desert? Oil has been found in its northeastern corner. Q Is the Empty Quarter in saudi arabia really empty?
    http://www.kfshrc.edu.sa/arabian/html/faq_geography.html
You are navigating: Saudi Arabia Links Arabian Advantures Q: Is Saudi Arabia all one big desert?
A: It is true that a large part of Saudi Arabia is desert, not only the great sand deserts such as the largest in the world, the famous Rub Al-Khali or Empty Quarter that covers most of the southern part of the country, but the wastelands of the rocky plateaus, gravel plains, and salt flats. In the west, however, there are mountain ranges running the full length of the Red Sea. Since there is high rainfall in the southwest, the escarpment in the Asir, Al-Baha and Jizan provinces is green and tree-clad, and the slopes are covered with terraces where for thousands of years farmers have grown a wide range of crops. Q: What is the Empty Quarter?
A: The Empty Quarter (Rub Al-Khali) is the largest sand desert in the world and occupies much of southern Saudi Arabia, bordering on Yemen, Oman and the Emirates. Most of it consists of massive rolling sand dunes, but to the west there are gravel plains that rise towards the mountains of the Asir, and to the east there are salt pans, near the Arabian Gulf. Oases are few, and movement has always been difficult. Oil has been found in its northeastern corner. Q: Is the Empty Quarter in Saudi Arabia really empty?

    History
Main article: History of Saudi Arabia The Saudi state began in central Arabia in about 1750. A local ruler, Muhammad bin Saud , joined forces with an Islamic reformer, Muhammad Abd Al-Wahhab , to create a new political entity. Over the next 150 years, the fortunes of the Saud family rose and fell several times as Saudi rulers contended with Egypt, the Ottoman Empire , and other Arabian families for control on the peninsula. The modern Saudi state was founded by the late King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (known internationally as Abdul al-Aziz Ibn Saud).

History: The history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia dates back to about 1747 when the ruler of the central Arabian Peninsula, Muhammad Bin Saud, formed an alliance with the Muslim scholar and reformer Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhab, a partnership that led to the founding of the modern state.
The Al-Saud family ruled much of the Arabian Peninsula throughout the 19th century. In 1902, Abdul Aziz Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud succeeded in recapturing Riyadh from the Al-Rashid and in the following thirty years united the numerous and disparate tribes into one nation.

The kingdom occupies 80 percent of the Arabian Peninsula. Most of the country's boundaries with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and the Republic of Yemen (formerly two separate countries: the Yemen Arab Republic, or North Yemen; and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, or South Yemen) are undefined, so the exact size of the country remains unknown. The Saudi government estimate is 2,217,949 square kilometers. Other reputable estimates vary between 2,149,690 square kilometers and 2,240,000 square kilometers. Less than 1 percent of the total area is suitable for cultivation, and in the early 1990s population distribution varied greatly among the towns of the eastern and western coastal areas, the densely populated interior oases, and the vast, almost empty deserts. Data as of December 1992
