    Desert Culture
Traditional Bedouins are slowly being settled but the desert remains an integral part of Saudi life. By Marco Venditti "I went to Saudi Arabia only just in time. Others will go there to study geology and archaeology...but they will never know the spirit of the land nor the greatness of the Arabs". Photo by Marco Venditti At that time Bedouin society constituted about a quarter of the population of the Arabian peninsula. Today the number is steadily decreasing as the Bedouins are absorbed into settled society. In Saudi Arabia, the widespread discovery of oil and the subsequent exploitation of the desert interior has made areas which have been the dominion of the Bedouin for thousands of years accessible to the government and multinational companies. Khalid Al-Hallaf is a former Bedouin from the Shammari tribe of the Hail region, in the north of Saudi Arabia. Like most old Bedouin he is not sure of his age, but he remembers the fighting between the tribes of Al Rashid and Al Saud in the early 1930s, before the establishment of the modern Saudi Arabian state. Ten years ago he decided to abandon nomadic life and he lives now in a small settlement 100 miles north of Hail, where he built a brick house for his family and his seven children. "My sons go to school now," he begins explaining as he lights the fire for coffee, which will be flavored with cardamon and ginger, "I want them one day to work for the National Guard." Four of his children study at a nearby valley, where the government has built a school which gathers students from the several settlements scattered around.

    Saudi Arabia History and Culture
History Arabia was probably the original home of the Semites. Beginning in the 4th millennium BC, these ancient peoples moved into Mesopotamia and Palestine, where they came to be identified as Assyro-Babylonians, Canaanites, and Amorites. Culture Saudi culture is based on Islam and the perfection of the Arabic language. The Saudi form of Islam is conservative and fundamentalist, based on the 18th-century revivalist movement of the Najdi leader Shaikh Mohammed Ibn Abdel-Wahhab. This still has a great effect on Saudi society, especially on the position of women, who do not generally go out without being totally covered in black robes (abaya) and masks, although there are regional variations of dress. The Najd and other remote areas remain true to Wahhabi tradition, but throughout the country this way of life is being threatened by modernisation and rapid development.

    Saudi Arabia
Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia recently offered a peace proposal to end the longstanding Israel-Palestinian conflict. Under the proposed agreement, Israel would withdraw from the lands it occupied in the Six-Day War in 1967, and, in return, its Arab neighbors would normalize relations with the Jewish state. The proposal is gaining support. It would effectively end seventeen months of bloodshed, establish an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem, and give Israel the greatest degree of peace and security it has ever known. But the Saudi Arabia plan still has many roadblocks. Not all Arab nations have agreed to the proposal. Conservative Israelis strongly oppose giving up one inch of the occupied lands. And extremists on both sides may try to derail the peace process through continued terrorist tactics. In this week's online lesson you will learn about Saudi Arabia and its interests in the region.

For those familiar with the European tradition of using just a forename, optional middle name and surname, names in the Arab world can seem perplexing, not least because they can run to enormous length. However, there is a logical structure to the Arab naming convention that, once seen, makes it simple to decipher a person's recent ancestry. SaudiCities

Mecca, home of the holy Mosque and the Ka'abah Photo courtesy of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia web site. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia occupies a highly important position in world affairs, as it is both the heartland of Islam and the possessor of the world's largest oil and gas reserves. Comprising most of the Arabian Peninsula, Saudi Arabia covers an area approximately the same size as Western Europe. Over 95 percent of the country is desert, including the world's largest sand desert the Rub al Khali (or "Empty Quarter") in the southeast, and the Nafud which stretches across the northwest of the peninsula. Saudi Arabia is considered to be the birthplace and spiritual center of Islam. Virtually all aspects of Saudi Arabian society are guided by Islamic ideals. The Koran is the basis of Saudi Arabia's constitution, while Shari'ah (Islamic law) is the basis of the country's legal system. Arabic is Saudi Arabia's official language and is considered a holy language by Muslims. Today, the majority of Saudi Arabians are Sunni Muslim, while a Shi'a minority is concentrated in the eastern province.

For thousands of years, the people of the Arabian Peninsula have been at the geographic, commercial and cultural crossroads of the world. As early as 3,000 BC, the people of the western region of the peninsula were part of a far-reaching commercial network extending to south Asia, the Mediterranean and Egypt. The discovery some 1,900 years ago of the cyclical pattern of trade winds known as the monsoon, from the Arabic “Mausam” meaning season, increased the importance of the peninsula. Trade flourished, with merchants of the peninsula acting as the vital link between India and the Far East on the one side and Byzantium and the Mediterranean states on the other. Interaction with other cultures of east and west over the centuries enriched the ancient traditions and culture of the people of the peninsula.
The introduction of Islam to the Arabian heartland in the seventh century AD further strengthened the region's cultural heritage. Within a century, Islam spread west to the Atlantic Ocean and as far east as the Indian subcontinent and China. With Makkah as its core, the Islamic world witnessed a flowering of culture, the sciences and the arts unparalleled in human history. Every year for the past fourteen centuries, Muslim pilgrims from around the world have traveled to Islam's holiest sites in Makkah and Madinah, helping further enrich the culture of the people of the peninsula.

o Amnesty Culture of brutality Many traumatized men and women have spoken to Amnesty International over the years about their suffering at the hands of the police. Their testimonies illustrate a culture of brutality, torture and ill-treatment in many police stations, prisons and detention centres across the country. Despite having acceded to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 1997, the Saudi Arabian government allows torture to continue unabated. Torture methods range from techniques involving sticks, electric shocks, cigarette burns, nail-pulling and threats of sexual attack on the detainee or relatives, to beatings. Torture and ill-treatment are used to extract confessions and to enforce discipline. They are also inflicted apparently without reason - simply because it is the culture of the prison. Sometimes, prisoners die as a result. Maitham al-Bahr, a 21-year-old Saudi Arabian, reportedly died in December 1996 in al-Dammam Central Hospital, allegedly as a result of torture. He was a university student from al-Qatif in the Eastern Province. He was reportedly detained during a wave of arrests after the 1996 bombing of the al-Khobar military complex. In November he was transferred from al-Mabahith al-'Amma headquarters in al-Dammam, where he was being detained, to the hospital. A post-mortem examination reportedly revealed that he had various ailments, including renal failure and swelling in several parts of his body, which were allegedly caused by torture.
