Up and down chic Tahliyah Street, carloads of teenage boys, with baseball caps worn rakishly backward and their ankle-length robes tossed aside in favor of baggy, low-slung pants, idle alongside cars full of teenage girls driven by chauffeurs. As I take in the scene with "Hassan" (not his real name), my 18-year-old guide, a green Chevy slowly passes a silver Jeep Cherokee, and a blizzard of paper flies between their vehicles.
"What was that all about?" I ask. "They're 'numbering,' " Hassan explains. "A girl writes her cell phone number on a piece of paper, rolls it into a ball, and throws it at a boy. Then she waits for a call." But the flirting, with its paper-wad blizzards and cell phone dates, has a distinctive Saudi twist: The girls are still covered from head-to-foot in the black gown known as the

Introduction: Some of the world's most beautiful living coral reefs are located beneath both the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. A paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers, these coastal areas offer endless hours of underwater exploration. Wind surfing, sailing and water skiing are also popular pastimes in the Gulf and Red Sea waters along the Saudi coast. Also, some of the world's best deep-sea fishing can be found in the Red Sea. The Coastal Sports Cities in Jeddah and Al-Khobar and other clubs offer opportunities for a variety of water sports and recreational activities.
By investing in sports facilities, organizing clubs and sports programs and sending its athletes to regional and international competitions, the government of Saudi Arabia seeks to encourage public participation in sports and recreational activities as part of a healthy lifestyle. The participation of hundreds of thousands of Saudis of all ages in cycling races, marathons, soccer tournaments and other sporting events testifies to the success of the government program. Under the Sixth Development Plan (1995-99), more sports facilities and programs will be established throughout the Kingdom. Special emphasis will be placed on the continuing improvement of the quality of sports and physical education offered to Saudi youth.
Traditional crafts are increasingly popular today.

Jenadriyah Heritage and Cultural Festival: In 1985, the first Saudi National Heritage and Culture Festival was held in Jenadriyah near Riyadh The annual event organized by the National Guard under the patronage of the King epitomizes Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving and exploring its cultural heritage. For two weeks out of the year, the festival provides over a million Saudis with a glimpse into the past. A traditional camel race opens the festival which encompasses almost every aspect of Saudi Arabia's culture and heritage. Artisans, such as potters, woodworkers and weavers demonstrate their traditional crafts in small shops with typical palm-frond-roofed porches.
During the course of the festival, folklore troupes perform the Ardha and other national dances, while singers from around the Kingdom perform traditional songs and music. Literary figures from across the country participate in poetry competitions between contemporary poets reciting historic verses. A permanent heritage village has now been erected at Jenadriyah

Flag of Saudi Arabia Background:
In 1902 Abdul al-Aziz Ibn SAUD captured Riyadh and set out on a 30-year campaign to unify the Arabian peninsula. In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year.
A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns. http://www.mideasttravelling.net/saudi_arabia/al_madinah/al_madinah_culture.htm
ADVERTISING INFORMATION Al Madinah - Culture Al Madinah city lies north of Mecca. The tomb of Mohammed is in the mosque at Medina, the second most holy Muslim city after Mecca. The Prophet's Mosque dominates the Madinah skyline. King Fahd, who oversaw the latest expansion of the mosque, wrote an inscription on the base of the last of the 23-foot brass crescents that top its six new minarets. Prophet Muhammad spent the last years of his life in this city, in Madinah he and many of his companions are buried. The Islamic University was founded in 1961. Population (1991 est): 400 000. Saudia, the Kingdom's national airline, operates non-stop flights between Madinah and many other Saudi cities. There are also international non-stop flights between Madinah and Cairo, Damascus, and Istanbul. During the season of hajj and the vacation periods of the academic year, many additional flights are provided. Madinah's altitude of 1,958 feet / 597m above sea level gives it a somewhat extreme climate - very hot in summer, moderate in autumn and cold in winter. Its generally fertile soil is given a boost in more rocky and arid areas, by the addition of clay-bearing soil, which is brought in from nearby to assist in landscaping. This is later mixed with crushed sand, peat moss, dried manure, and compost to balance the mineral content of the soil, thus increasing its fertile qualities. This prepared soil mixture is used particularly in the planting of the date palm.
