    ... Saskatchewan
    Saskatchewan
Located in the western part of Canada, Saskatchewan is bordered by Manitoba, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and the United States. The province is almost rectangular in shape and has an area of 651,900 square kilometres. Half of it consists of forests, one third of cultivated lands and one eighth is covered with water. The first European explorers and trappers to visit Saskatchewan in the late seventeenth century found established settlements of Aboriginal people. The Chipewyan Indians lived in the north and the nomadic Blackfoot roamed the eastern plains, while the Assiniboine inhabited the west. The territory of the Cree, who were long-time residents of the north, also extended southward to the plains. For 200 years, the Hudson's Bay Company owned and administered the region. Realizing its agricultural potential and the opportunities for colonization, the Government of Canada purchased the Territories in 1870. The Métis, people of mixed European and Aboriginal descent, were among the first settlers, many of them having migrated from Manitoba. Saskatchewan eventually entered Confederation as a province in 1905 and Regina became the provincial capital. Today, Saskatchewan's population stands at about one million. It is Canada's only province where the majority of the population does not have a British or French background. Immigrants from Germany, Ukraine, Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Poland and Russia, as well as from many non-European countries, have chosen to make Saskatchewan their home.
