home Tribute to Dr. Richards by Professor Robert Bone at Dr. Richard's funeral on October 3, 2003 at St. John's Anglican Church. JOHN HOWARD BYRON RICHARDS, Ph.D (Toronto)
Howard Richards received his Ph.D from the University of Toronto in 1954. He founded the Department of Geography at the University of Saskatchewan in 1960. After a remarkable career, Howard retired in 1983. He died September 25th, 2003 at St. Paul's Hospital at the age of 87. As an internationally recognized geographer, Howard Richards made his mark in his chosen field, Geography. In addition, Howard served as President of the Canadian Association of Geographers, as Director of Land Use Mapping in Saskatchewan, and as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners. His professional interests and accomplishments span a wide area. Let me focus on three aspects of his professional life - Dr. Richards as a builder, an innovator, and as an applied geographer.
