A physically active lifestyle helps prevent disease and chronic conditions, boosts the positive effects of rehabilitation, reduces the potential for injuries and manages other risk factors. In addition to physiological benefits, physical activity improves concentration, relationship development, social integration and quality of life. Personal benefits, such as enhanced self-esteem, often result from a physically active lifestyle. In August 2001, Joanne Crofford, Minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation, publicly released A Physically Active Saskatchewan - A Strategy to Get Saskatchewan People in Motion. This provincial strategy calls on the Government of Saskatchewan to work collaboratively with the sport, recreation, culture, education and health sectors to address the significantly high level of physical inactivity in this province. The aim of the strategy is to reduce physical inactivity by 10% by the year 2005 - Saskatchewan's centennial!

PROMISING LEGISLATION FOR SASKATCHEWAN ARTISTS June 7, 2002
Yesterday, the government of Saskatchewan became the second provincial jurisdiction in Canada to address artists’ equity by tabling enabling legislation, a precursor to a fully developed Status of the Artist act. “This legislation is a recognition of the importance of Saskatchewan artists and represents a new respect for their contribution to society, not just economically but in social and community terms,” said the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance (SAA) President, Allen Lefebvre. “The legislation articulates the valuable contribution of artists to Saskatchewan,” echoed Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford. Saskatchewan is the first provincial jurisdiction outside Quebec that has introduced Status of the Artist legislation - Quebec has had provincial legislation for artists since 1987. Known as The Status of the Artist Act , this legislation will enable the minister to establish advisory committees to research, study and report to her on more substantive work, training, education and social equity issues for artists. These advisory committees will be appointed by the minister with input from the cultural sector.

Natural Resources Canada Minister Ralph E. Goodale, on behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Secretary of State (Western Economic Diversification) (Francophonie) made the announcement today during the sod-turning ceremony in Prince Albert. The arts centre will include a 600 person capacity theatre and 3000 square foot visual arts gallery. It will serve as a focal point for artistic and cultural activities in the Prince Albert area. This project is being funded by the Government of Canada through the CSIP. "One of the goals of the Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program is to support economic growth in Saskatchewan communities. The Prince Albert Centre for the Visual and Performing Arts will increase the number of performing and cultural opportunities, aid in developing a stronger tourism sector and enhance future economic growth for the City of Prince Albert," said Minister Goodale. The Government of Saskatchewan previously committed $2.3 million to the facility through the Cultural Facilities Grant Program of the Associated Entities Fund.

Canadian society is built on an open, democratic system of government and a justice system designed to protect the individual and prevent the violence and persecution that is too often seen in other countries. The police and courts are subject to regulations and public scrutiny that guarantee fairness and protection for all residents. Regardless of race, creed or country of origin, Canada's constitution ensures that individual human rights and freedoms are protected. Saskatchewan welcomes immigrants from around the world to come and enjoy the freedom, security and opportunity our province has to offer.

has established a standalone committee responsible for overseeing the developmentof culture, heritage and language within the Metis Nation - saskatchewan.
    http://www.metisnation-sask.com/culture/
Culture, Language and Heritage The MNS has established a stand-alone committee responsible for overseeing the development of culture, heritage and language within the Metis Nation - Saskatchewan. A number of community organizations run by Métis citizens have undertaken festivals and days of celebration across the province. The Prince Albert Métis Fall Festival , the Métis Spring Fest in Saskatoon, Métis Days at St. Victoire by Assiniboia, Lebret Days; Crescent Lake are but a few examples of these activities. In northwest Saskatchewan community members gather for Palmbere Days held each year at Palmbere Lake. The Métis Nation - Saskatchewan proudly hosts Back to Batoche Days each year in July. These celebrations, along with events across the Homeland remind us of the rich cultural traditions we have inherited. We encourage you to participate wherever possible and to show support to the many volunteers that make these celebrations possible. At this point in time, many of the artifacts and collections of art work and tools are held in various museums across the homeland and elsewhere. The MNS hopes to develop a specific archives and museum facility in the province where families can donate articles to the Metis Nation for safekeeping for generations to come. Michif is the official language of the Métis Nation although many of our people speak other Aboriginal languages such as Cree, Dene and Saulteaux. This committee is charged with the responsibility for developing strategies and plans for the maintenance and restoration of the Michif language. The Gabriel Dumont Institute has begun this work with a series of children's books and tapes, which can be ordered through the Institution's publication services. The federal government has a four-year Aboriginal languages program that throughout the Métis National Council the Métis were able to secure 10% for the preservation and enhancement of the Michif language. The MNS is currently in year three of the four-year program. Michif workshops were held in various locations throughout the province, in addition to several national ones.
