SAS Programming I

This course will introduce students to SAS programming. The course will introduce basic SAS programming topics such as navigating the SAS development environment, reading raw data files and SAS data sets, writing the results to SAS data sets, subsetting data, and creating simple summary reports. The course will also present more advanced programming concepts such as using the DATA step to: control data input and output, combine SAS data sets, summarize data, process data iteratively with loops and arrays, and perform data manipulations and transformations. 3 Credits (3 Lecture -0 Lab) Prerequisite(s): and

The SAS system contains a comprehensive programming language to allow users to read data from a variety of file structures, re-shape and re-arrange data, and invoke a large number of pre-written statistical procedures. Statistical procedures, called PROCs in SAS, are available for report writing, elementary, multi-variate and time-series analysis, operations research and graphics. SAS is particularly suited to the analysis of experimental data, while a second product available at the University of Guelph, SPSS, is more frequently used for the analysis of data from surveys and questionnaires. RefCenter Programming Documentation > Running SAS on UNIX
Running SAS on UNIX
This document details how to run SAS programs on the general purpose UNIX systems. You will need to have a general purpose Unix account to be able to run SAS. If you don't have an account, contact the HelpDesk for instructions on how to create one. Gpsas.umr.edu and nicsas.umr.edu are the two machines allocated to run SAS. Gpsas.umr.edu is the general purpose machine while nicsas.umr.edu is the numerically intensive computing machine used for serious number-crunching. Anyone with a general purpose AFS account has access to these services. User processes on gpsas and nicsas are limited to 2 minutes of CPU time. Processes exceeding the 2 minute limit will automatically be killed.
To create and run a SAS program:
Create a SAS file:
  • Type: pico sas-filename (to start the UNIX editor).
The sas-filename is the name of your SAS source file.
It should have a .sas extension, such as, "prog1.sas"
