OVERSEAS (EUROPE) MEDICAL SCREENING INTRODUCTION For several years, the medical/social work screening of CF members posted to Europe, as well as their dependants', has caused significant difficulties. Even if the majority of these members and their family are reasonably healthy and do not require special care, the few of them who do inevitably generate major problems for CFMS personnel and administrative authorities who are responsible for them overseas. Those CF members and their family who are allowed to go overseas in spite of important contraindications are often deeply disappointed. They find that what should have been a uniquely pleasant overseas experience has become a nightmare because the types of services they were expecting are not available in the new location, or at least not as easily available as in Canada. To prevent these unfortunate situations, the following guidelines and contact numbers are provided to CFMS personnel to help them better determine who should, and who should not, be considered fit for a posting to Europe. Debbie,
This myth about whether smokers and non-smokers are more likely to "get" sarcoidosis is an excellent example of exactly what is wrong with a lot of medical research these days.
Too much medical research is based on what is called "epidemiological" studies. Instead of trying to get an understanding of what endocrinological factors are behind a disease, the epidemiologist gathers together a lot of statistical data from a census, or from a hospital's records, and tries to make inferences based (usually) purely on the statistical (epidemiological) data.
I, too, was trained in statistics. But my professor introduced the course with a book called "How to Lie with Statistics". Effectively it showed the many ways in which statistics can be misused in order to prove one's own point. We were taught to make sure that we understood the problem before beginning to draw inferences from the data.

I have moved this to a new thread to avoid confusion on the general thread.
I have reviewed the article you referenced. Not having a medical background I can't address the details of the conclusions. It does seem that to a layman, the study has at least acknowledged the possibility of a bacterial cause for Sarcoid.
Can you provide the specific link to the information that I should share with Dr Om Sharma to at least get his opinion on why this approach is not considered along with the other standard procedures.
