Animal Rights and Welfare Sites
NOTE: Many (maybe most!) of the sites listed below are opposed to the existence of zoos. I think these viewpoints make interesting reading and that anyone interested in zoos and in animals should know about them. While I don't agree with everything that is said, I DO support any group dedicated to the protection of animals, either in the wild or in captivity. Further, I believe that anyone who keeps animals in captivity should be accountable for whatever actions they take and have NOTHING TO HIDE. Ideally, a good zoo will continuously strive to become a better home for the animals in their care and contribute much to education and conservation. They should always be open to inspection and (constructive) criticism. If you have questions about anything your local zoo is doing you should contact the director and voice your concerns.

Earth sanctuaries, the company established to rescue endangered native animals by ridding Australia of feral cats, has wound up on the threatened list itself as a $10 million funding gap leaves the conservationist group facing extinction.

Earth Sancturies Fails
By Eli Greenblat Sydney Morning Herald Earth Sanctuaries, the company established to rescue endangered native Australian animals, has wound up on the endangered list itself as a $10 million funding gap looks likely to snuff out the conservationist group. The company is triggerering a complete restructure of its business and will seek a buyer for all its assets, as the failure to raise much needed funds has caused the resignation of its chairman and chief executive. The company said it would try to sell its 10 sanctuaries spread across South Australia, NSW and Victoria, which are valued at $15 million, and as part of the scaling-down process chairman Don Stammer and chief executive Wendy Craik would resign. Challenger Corporate Finance will assist in the asset sale and restructure, with the board open to selling its land as parcels or for an interested party to acquire all the shares in the company. The company said more than 3000 endangered native Australian animals could perish unless a buyer interested in maintaining the conservationist work was found for the freehold land. Earth Sanctuaries rose to prominence in 2000 when it became the world’s first conservation company to go public.

Killing With Kindness

Chocolates are readily available around many homes but how many people know that human chocolate can cause serious harm to animals, espcially dogs?
Chocolate aimed at humans contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to dogs, it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, convulsions, even death.
Cocoa powder is the most toxic, followed by dark and then milk chocolate.
So please remember to put those boxes of chocolates out of the reach of your animals and if you want to give your dog a chocolate treat stick to special doggie chocolate drops which you can buy from pet shops.
