Wath Animal Rescue
Reports reckon that Yorkshire is one of the worst areas in the country for cruelty to animals. Frankly this does not surprise me. I can only speak for the area I live in but there must be some of the most ignorant louts in creation around here. I often met children as young as ten out with air rifles having a merry afternoon shooting songbirds. In fact some of the yobs with guns will shoot anything that moves - swans, herons, rabbits, cats, dogs, children and adults. Equally there are many, many people who abandon their pets when they are no longer cute, when they are difficult, when they are in need of treatment from a vet, pregnant, old or simply getting in the way of holidays. These are the sort who would like abandon their children just as fast, but children mean money from the state.
I have to say here that however concerned and helpful the RSPCA appear on their television appearances my own experiences of this particular society in this area is that they are totally unconcerned and entirely unhelpful. That is if anybody ever answers the phone at all in the first place. No - if you need help with abandoned or hurt animals, or you want to volunteer to help with animals in the Rotherham area I suggest you try one of these animal sanctuaries or rescue groups.

Editor's note: The contest ended at midnight on Saturday, September 27. The HSUS is counting votes and will announce the winners on Wednesday, October 1. What do an abandoned donkey, a neglected sheep, and an abused horse have in common? What about a pig bound for the slaughterhouse or a factory farm laying hen? The answer is that they have all found permanent, loving homes at one of the more than 50 farm animal sanctuaries across the United States. Farm sanctuaries rescue abused and neglected animals, and assist in disasters by securing homes and transportation for the animals. Disasters can be natural, such as floods or hurricanes, or man-made, like when a factory farm closes its doors for financial reasons. Thousands, or perhaps millions, of animals need help in those instances, and while farm sanctuaries cannot save every animal, they network to rescue as many as possible. Many farm sanctuaries open their doors to the public in an effort to educate people about the horrors of factory farming. At the sanctuaries, adults and children alike can see cows, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals exhibiting their natural behaviors in spacious surroundings. The animals are able to roam the fields, root in the ground, or stretch their wings, just as they would in nature. In addition, the animals' own individual personalities can be expressed.

This is where farm animal sanctuaries come into play. The Lighthouse is one of many such farm animal sanctuaries in the United States.

Wayne Geiger/Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary Bart, the miniature donkey, knew his duties for the day: He was supposed to allow guests to walk him around the farm grounds or just sit still as they posed with him for a picture. Bart, however, had other plans. The donkey decided he would lead the charge. Guests found themselves desperately hanging on to Bart's lead rope as he pranced around the grounds, as if he were the designated spokesanimal for this September 21, 2002 open house at the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary in Sheridan, Oregon, about 20 miles west of Salem. But that's what happens when you actually allow a farm animal to express himself: You discover he actually has a mind of his own. And a personality. And lots of other surprising traits. Bart lives with nearly 80 farm animals, including cattle, burros, llamas, sheep, pigs, geese, ducks, goats and chickens. They all live but through the grace of the Lighthouse, which was established when the animals' previous home, at another area sanctuary, was on the verge of collapse. Land was donated to the Lighthouse, and the animals had themselves a new home. The September 21 open house, which was filled with tours and activities for both animal and visitor, was the Lighthouse's first public event, and it purposely coincided with National Farm Animals Awareness Week. Both events are designed to raise consciousness about farm animals in our increasingly urban and technological society.

July 31, 2003 To: ASA Sanctuaries, National Animal Protection Groups, and the Captive Wild Animal Protection Coalition Re: ASA's Response to the Captive Wild Animal Protection Coalition
ASA agrees with many of the points raised in the Captive Wild Animal Protection Coalition's (CWAPC) policy statement regarding the surplus of wild animals kept by irresponsible USDA Class A, B and C licenses, and the need to address this legislatively. ASA is also aware that right now there are more big cats than there is space available in acceptable sanctuaries or zoological facilities, and we do not approve of the placement of these animals in substandard facilities, circuses, and sideshows. And we know that there are more big cats who will need sanctuary placement in the future. But, respectfully, we do not agree with several issues raised by the CWAPC. CWAPC recommends that the "90 big cats rescued in California and Texas by authorities in those states, be humanely euthanized if appropriate and reputable, accredited zoos and sanctuaries are not found fore them." As President of the American Sanctuary Association (ASA), the Roar Foundation, and Shambala preserve, I do not condone CWAPC's euthanasia policy and will fight it every step of the way. It is also my hope that you will join me in opposing this demonic and callous plan. In addition, ASA plans to notify the California Fish and Game Commission, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the USDA, that ASA will never endorse the wholesale slaughter of animals.

Wildlife Rescue Vanishing Species Wildlife obtains most of our animals through: Confiscations While it is legal to own a variety of large, exotic, and endangered species of animals, rules and regulations must be followed that govern animal ownership and care. When an exotic animal owner does not have the appropriate paperwork or does not take proper care of their animal, authorities will step in and confiscate the animal. These animals are then found a home in a reputable animal facility, such as Vanishing Species Wildlife, Inc. Surrenders Many people who purchase a pet tiger, panther, or other exotic animal focus on the cuddly little bundle of joy in their hands, and ignore the fact that many exotic animals will grow to hundreds of pounds, eat lots of food, and require constant care. In other instances students who move away to college or into a more strictly zoned location, may not be able to take the animal with them. When owners decide they no longer want an animal, cannot afford the animal, or the owner moves, becomes sick, unemployed, or dies, they may surrender the animal to a reputable animal facility, such as Vanishing Species Wildlife, Inc.
