Killing With Kindness

Chocolates are readily available around many homes but how many people know that human chocolate can cause serious harm to animals, espcially dogs?
Chocolate aimed at humans contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to dogs, it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, convulsions, even death.
Cocoa powder is the most toxic, followed by dark and then milk chocolate.
So please remember to put those boxes of chocolates out of the reach of your animals and if you want to give your dog a chocolate treat stick to special doggie chocolate drops which you can buy from pet shops.

April 27, 2004 Farm animal sanctuaries Since I became vegetarian nearly three-and-a-half years ago, I've done as much as I can to learn about my diet and its affect on animals, the environment, and my health. I feel like I've gotten to a pretty good point where I'm "nearly vegan" and though that's good, I wanted to contribute even more directly to animal welfare in a way that wasn't as self-focused. A few months ago, I started to volunteer at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary . I'm still just a beginner when it comes to farm work, but I've learned so much from Terry, Dave, and all the great volunteers and employees at Poplar Spring. I've learned the best way to carry a lamb, how best to pick up a piglet, what can happen if horses and mules eat too much grass during the springtime, and why young pigs need suntan lotion. I've also seen first hand how farm animals have very individual personalities, just like dogs and cats, which has deepened my resolve for being vegetarian. It's certainly not the most glamorous work in the world, but I look forward to it each and every time I go. It's very rewarding to know I'm directly affecting animals that have been victims of the pain, torture, and neglect associated with food production, ritual sacrifice, and even animal hoarding. Something I've found is that not many people realize that sanctuaries for farm animals even exist. Heck

From Animal Issues , Volume 32 Number 4, Winter 2001
Animal Sanctuaries and Animal Activism
By Craig Brestrup "Sanctuary" is defined, in part, as a place of safety and care for creatures whose only alternative would be an unsuitable setting, suffering, or death. When sanctuary is offered to humans, it carries religious overtones. Think, for example, of the gathering place for worship within sacred architecture or of the protection provided refugees or people persecuted. Sanctuary, in short, represents safekeeping under the auspices of transcendent or ethical values. As such it embodies both instrumental good (protection of the threatened) and intrinsic good (something good in itself and an expression of human goodness). That said, where do sanctuaries stand in the continuum of animal activism and animal rights? The minimal conception of sanctuaries is that they offer rescue and care and little more in the way of education or advocacy. At the sanctuary, protection, nurture, and respect intervene between an animal and misery or premature death. Comprehensive social change involves a triad of intervention education , and advocacy . In animal activism, sanctuary composes the first leg of

Sanctuaries Corrupted into Killing Fields
By Camilla Fox On November 13, 1995, a mild winter afternoon, a golden retriever named Bandit went with his caregiver for a walk along a road in Wisconsin's Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge. Among the smells in the air was a mouth-watering scent that Bandit could not resist. Too late, caregiver and dog learned that the aroma came from bait set in a Conibear trap to catch a raccoon. Bandit's head was completely caught in the trap. Despite all his efforts, Bandit's caregiver could not remove the trap before the dog suffocated to death in his arms. The trap was perfectly legal, placed under a permit obtained by a trapper from the refuge, which annually sells exclusive rights to trap muskrat, beaver, and raccoon in certain areas. But neither Bandit nor his caregiver had known of the trap, and Bandit paid the price. Tragedies All Too Frequent This horror story is hardly an isolated incident (see "
