Samoa Geography Samoa is an independent state and member of the Commonwealth and the United Nations.
It consists of two main islands (Upolu and Savaii) and seven smaller ones with a total land area of 2934 sq. km. The capital is Apia, on Upolu.
Samoa’s nearest neighbor is American Samoa, to its east. Samoa lies 8 degrees east of the International Date Line and 13 degrees south of the equator.
On this map you will notice Samoa designated as W.Sam (for its former name of Western Samoa), just South of Tokelau and West of American Samoa (Am Sam.). Samoa SPBD is now operating in over 80 villages spread out across the island of Upolu.
SPBD's main offices are in Apia, in the centre of Upolu's North coast.
SPBD is ambitious to open operations on the island of Savaii within the next 18 months. Financing for this operation reamains the key hurdle.
Note that in 1997 Samoa legally changed it's name through the United Nations. Many map makers however still refer to Samoa as Western Samoa (hence the name in bold on this map.) Demographics Samoa has a population of approximately 170,000, most of who live on the two main islands. Most live in small rural villages, along the coasts which fringe the mountainous interior. Ethnic Samoans, who are Polynesians, make up 93% of the population. Europeans, account for less than 1% of the population. The remaining 6% are people of mixed Polynesian and European blood. The population is 99.7% Christian. Forty percent of the population is under 15 years of age.

The Samoan archipelago is located between 168º and 173º West Longitude, and 14º35' and 13º20' South Latitude, in the South Pacific. It is considered part of the "Polynesian Triangle" of islands that stretch from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the east, to New Zealand in the west, and as far north as the Hawaiian Islands. The nearest major islands to the Samoan archipelago are Tonga, located approximately 750 miles to the south-southwest, and Fiji, approximately 780 miles to the southwest. The Samoan islands are almost completely volcanic in origin. Historically, the intra-island cultures of the Samoan archipelago have many affinities, were close traders, and were sometimes combatants. Since 1900 the Samoan islands have been divided politically between the U.S. territory of American Samoa to the east, and the now independent nation of Samoa to the west. Location: Oceania, group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, about one-half of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand
Climate: tropical; rainy season (October to March), dry season (May to October)
Terrain: narrow coastal plain with volcanic, rocky, rugged mountains in interior Natural resources: hardwood forests, fish, hydropower Natural hazards: occasional typhoons; active volcanism The economy of Samoa has traditionally been dependent on development aid, private family remittances from overseas, and agricultural exports. The country is vulnerable to devastating storms. Agriculture employs two-thirds of the labor force, and furnishes 90% of exports, featuring coconut cream, coconut oil, and copra. Outside of a large automotive wire harness factory, the manufacturing sector mainly processes agricultural products. Tourism is an expanding sector; more than 70,000 tourists visited the islands in 1996. The Samoan Government has called for deregulation of the financial sector, encouragement of investment, and continued fiscal discipline. Observers point to the flexibility of the labor market as a basic strength for future economic advances.

Welcome to Samoa, the Heart of Polynesia
The Samoa Islands, nestled in the warm, crystal clear waters of the blue Pacific Ocean, are a popular destination for vacationers. The gentle climate has blessed this tropical paradise with a bounty of delicious fruits, and lush vegetation. Apart from the many magnificent white sand beaches, rugged forested mountains, steep gorges, numerous waterfalls, lava fields, blowholes, dormant volcanoes and coconut plantations, many other exciting scenic wonders beckon. If you are looking for a place to take a well deserved holiday, Samoa offers everything you could want. You can find out more in the 'Things to Do' page. Come and experience the history, myths and legends of our island paradise. A land where virgin rain forests spawn sparkling waterfalls and secluded spring-fed pools and streams. Where on clean, sweeping white beaches, sunshine and palm trees may be your only companions. And in the villages which necklace the coast, the dominant buildings are churches and the "fale" - great open meeting buildings where, in a unique governing system, the "matai" family representatives get together weekly to efficiently administer the village's affairs. It's a system that's been successful for over 3,000 years.

It consists of five major volcanic islands and two coral atolls (see Figure 1) that lie in the heart of Polynesia, 2,500 miles south-southwest of Honolulu and 1,800 miles north-northeast of New Zealand. It is the only U.S. jurisdiction that lies south of the equator. Tutuila Island, which contains the historic capital of Pago Pago, the seat of government at Fagatogo, and the office of the Governor at Utulei, encompasses 70 percent of American Samoa's 77.3 square miles and over 95 percent of its 46,773 inhabitants (see Figure 1). In 1839, the visit of an American naval vessel marked the first official United States contact with this area. In 1872, the need for a coaling station brought about an agreement between the commander of the U.S. naval vessel Narragansett and the chief of Pago Pago; although the agreement was never ratified by the U.S. Senate, it prevented other nations from making claims on Pago Pago Harbor as international competition for bases in the South Pacific increased.
