  • Beginnings
The Anglican Church in New Zealand had its beginnings in 1814 when the Maori chief Ruatara agreed with the Reverend Samuel Marsden to give protection to three missionaries and their families at Oihi in the Bay of Islands. Missionary activity, including Christian teaching in the Maori language, after initial difficulties, quickly spread throughout the country. The work was guided by the Church Missionary Society under the able local leadership of the Rev. Henry Williams from 1823. The work of the CMS faded significantly during the wars of the 1860s. The missionaries were assisted in many cases by their wives, who toiled and laboured alongside them. The Maori people themselves were vigorous evangelists among their own people, and some of them died for the cause of Christianity.
    Bishop Selwyn
With the advent of organised European settlement after 1840, mainly from England and Scotland, a new focus of the church emerged; the formation of the church in the new colonial settlements. This was given firm direction by George Augustus Selwyn, Bishop of New Zealand, who arrived in 1842 as a bishop of the United Church of England and Ireland. The settlers were intent on establishing their familiar church in a new land, but without the English connection with the state. A focus was always the

WESTERN SAHARA, PUERTO RICO, GUAM DISCUSSED IN CARIBBEAN REGIONAL SEMINAR
(Received from a UN Information Officer.)
HAVANA, Cuba, 24 May The situations of Western Sahara and Puerto Rico were addressed this morning by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) as the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples known as the Special Committee of 24 continued its Caribbean regional seminar to review the political, economic and social conditions in the small island Non-Self-Governing Territories.
Wilma Reveron, Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico, addressed the impact of military activities in the Caribbean area.  She said that in negotiating for a certain level of self-government of Puerto Rico, the United States Marines had extracted the price of using Vieques as a military base during the Second World War.  For the inhabitants of Vieques, the Second World War had never ended.  They had to give up three quarters of the island, which had an immediate economic and social impact, as agricultural land was destroyed.  At present, social indicators such as alcoholism and drug use had reached an alarming level.
Military activity had also led to environmental destruction and poisonous pollution affecting the health of the population, she said.  Waste had not been collected and cleaned by the Marines over 60 years.  There were alarming levels of mercury in the water and soil.  The United States Marines had confessed that they had used uranium-tipped bullets in their exercises.

    About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Samoa About the Country People Samoans are the largest group of full blooded Polynesians in the world and have retained much of their ancient tradition and culture. Traditional tattooing is an intricate ancient art of Samoa and young Samoan males are tattooed with complex symbolic designs, from the lower chest to the knees. Samoan (Polynesian) is the native language, however English is widely spoken and is the official language. History These islands were first settled about 3,000 years ago and are accepted as the cradle of the Polynesian culture. In 1768, French navigator Louis de Bougainville sighted Samoa and called them 'The Navigator Islands', because of the many Samoans sailing small canoes far from the sight of land. During the 18th century vast plantations producing copra and cotton were developed for export and Apia became a major commercial centre in the South Pacific. Annexed by Germany from 1899-1914, and then New Zealand from 1914 (after WWI) until independence in 1962, Western Samoa finally gained self government in 1962. Nature Beautiful fauna and flora are found on both islands. Savai'i particularly, has lush tropical rainforests housing many fascinating and exotic bird species.

Where is Samoa? Located in the South Pacific and midway between Hawaii and New Zealand, Samoa consists of two entities; Western Samoa - an independent nation since 1961, and American Samoa - a U.S. Territory since 1900. Samoa is generally referred to as the " Cradle of Polynesia " South Pacific Most Archaeologists believe the first Polynesians settled in what is now American Samoa around 600 B.C. By that time, Polynesians had established themselves on the eastern tip of Tutuila island in the village of Tula. These first inhabitants probably arrived in Tonga and the Samoas from the west, perhaps by way of Indonesia, Vanuatu and Fiji. Samoa's long isolation from the western world ended in 1722 when the Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, came upon the islands. It wasn't until 1831 however that European influence had any real impact. In that year, John Williams of the London Missionary Society arrived with eight Tahitian missionaries. Samoans took to Christianity with enthusiasm and remain a deeply religious people to this day.
