Enough Reason for me to explore this Pacific Culture.
I took these photos in the thick jungle of Western Samoa The Samoan Islands were first seen by Europeans in 1722 when three Dutch ships commanded by Jacob Roggewein visited the eastern island known as Manua. A member of Roggewein's expedition described the natives in these words:
" They are friendly in their speech and courteous in their behavior, with no apparent trace of
wildness or savagery. They do not paint themselves, as do the natives of some other islands, but
on the lower part of the body they wear artfully woven silk tights or knee breeches. They are
altogether the most charming and polite natives we have seen in all of the South Seas."
The Dutch ships lay at anchor off the islands for several days, but members of the crew did not venture ashore and apparently did not even get close enough to the natives to realize that they were not wearing silk breeches, but tattooing on their legs. The Market of Apia, Western Samoa

WESTERN SAMOA
Introduction:
Western Samoa, with its capital, Apia, on Upolu Island, is a land area of nearly 3,000 square kilometeres consisting of 9 islands, halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. The main entrance to Western Samoa is through Fiji via Air Pacific, or by direct flight by Air New Zealand via Hawaii. The two main islands are Upolu and Savaii. It is mainly serviced by Air New Zealand from Los Angeles, often through Papeete, Tahiti. English is the main language and although there is rainfall, the temperature is approximately 80-88 degrees year round. Only a US passport is required for entry; tipping is not necessary although the natives love small gifts (picture postcards from the US, souvenir type items, calendars, books etc) To me, Western Samoa is one of the "forgotten islands" which still thrives on its native culture, yet is safe, has good accommodations and extremely friendly natives. You see the typical Samoan house everywhere, open to the air with a column at each corner and light roof on the top. As you drive by, everyone waves to you. When I was there a couple of years ago, we arrived at 1:00am. While driving to the resort, I noted that everyone had their TV on and were sitting around the open living space. It turned out that that night was the only night of the week that TV was on and it was on for 24 hours. An array of sports is available on the Island, including swimming, deep sea fishing, tennis, squash, lawn bowls, golf, snorkeling and diving. Short shorts and bathing suits should be confined to the beach or pool.

Basic Information
American Samoa is an unincorporated and technically unorganized territory of the United States. It is "unincorporated" because unlike Hawaii and Alaska during their years as U.S. territories, not all provisions of the U.S. Constitution apply to the territory. American Samoa is an "unorganized" territory because Congress has not provided the territory with an organic act, which would organize the government, much like a constitution would. Instead, Congress gave plenary authority over the territory to the President of the United States who has delegated this authority to the Department of the Interior. The Secretary of the Interior in turn allowed American Samoans to draft their own constitution under which their government functions. American Samoans are not United States citizens. They are classified as United States nationals and have freedom of entry into the continental United States. Many Samoans have served with distinction in the U.S. armed forces.

ROBERT SHAFFER Approximately 3,500 years before Columbus came to America, ancestors of the earliest Polynesians discovered a group of islands that would someday be known as Samoa. In the ensuing 2,000 years their descendants created and established Samoa's culture and way of life. The Centennial Edition of American Samoa 100 Years Under the United States Flag looks back at the century of American involvement in these islands. Dozens of Samoan cultural artifacts have been placed on these pages, illustrating particular aspects of traditional Samoan life. Many of these artifacts have never been presented before in color tableaux that give such a rich insight into the material wealth and culture of American Samoa. LOOK !!! Droits d'auteur AMERICAN SAMOA CALLED TO PRAYER OVER YOUTH SUICIDES By Fili Sagapolutele, Samoa News PAGO PAGO, American Samoa, (Samoa News, Nov. 15) – A combined territorial church service in response to the increase in youth suicides in American Samoa is scheduled to start tomorrow at 9:30am. Lead by Rev. Max Poe Haleck, president of the Assembly of God Church in the Territory, the service will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tafuna and the organizers of this first type of service calls on the community to come together to offer prayers. Authorities say six youths have killed themselves in American Samoa in the past month. Neighboring Samoa is believed to have one of the highest suicide rates in the world as the demands of a traditional culture clash with exposure to Western culture. All congregations have been asked to not have their normal Sunday morning services but to come together for a territorial day of prayer seeking repentance and to ask for God's guidance on how to combat the suicide problem.

History

By the Treaty of Berlin of 1899, the United Kingdom and Germany renounced in favor of the United States all their rights and claims over the eastern islands of Samoa. This treaty went into effect on February 16, 1900. On April 17, 1900, the matai (chiefs) of Tutuila formally ceded the islands of Tutuila and Aunu'u to the United States. On July 16, 1904, the king and matai of Manu'a ceded the islands of Ta'u, Ofu, Olosega, and Rose Atoll to the United States. Congress formally ratified the 1900 and 1904 deeds of cession retroactively in 1929. Swains Island became part of American Samoa by joint resolution of Congress in 1925. Political Status
American Samoa, an unincorporated and unorganized territory of the United States, is administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It is "unincorporated" because not all provisions of the U.S. Constitution apply to the territory. The Congress has not provided the territory with an organic act, which organizes the government much like a constitution would. Instead, the Congress gave plenary authority over the territory to the Secretary of the Interior, who in turn allowed American Samoans to draft their own constitution under which their government functions.

History
In 1768, French navigator, Louis de Bougainville, sighted the islands of Samoa calling them the "Navigator Islands" because he encountered many Samoans sailing small canoes far from the sight of the land and assumed they must be good navigators. By the late 1700s, European traders were plying the Pacific and around 1800 ships began to call at Samoa for supplies. By the early nineteenth century, some Europeans (i.e. escaped convicts, seamen and whalers) had settled in Samoa. However by far the greatest impact of change on the culture and society of Samoa was the arrival of the Western missionaries. The strong influence of the missionaries and their teachings, have made the Samoan people devoutly religious right up until today, with much time and resources devoted to church activities.
After the arrival of the missionaries and European traders, vast plantations producing copra and cotton were developed for export, and Apia soon became a major commercial centre in the South Pacific. But, by the late 1800s, internal strife amongst the Samoan chiefs, and power struggles between the then present opposing colonial powers of Germany, America and Britain, led to a period of instability. However, by 1899, after a treaty was signed by the three colonial powers, Western Samoa was annexed by Germany and the country prospered until Germany's expulsion by New Zealand forces at the oubreak of World War One. New Zealand administered tenuously thereafter, but Samoan discontent, headed by the Mau movement, and a desire for self government led to a referendum in 1961. In January 1962, after overwhelming support for freedom from foreign rule, Western Samoa became the first independent island nation in the South Pacific.

by Samoa Koria,
San Diego, California
In 1995, the Pacific Islander community of San Diego held its first major community festival - more than 60,000 people came to the two-day festival, July 22nd and 23rd.
Organizing to overcome a perceived inviability of Pacific Islander people in San Diego, Chamorros, people of the Cook Islands, Fijians, Guamanians, Hawaiians, Maoris, people of the Marianas, Marshallese, people of the Federated States of Micronesia, Samoans, the Tokelau, Tongans, and others came together to put on this historic event.
With the theme of Hokule'a-Ho'oku'i I Ka Pakipika (Bridging the Pacific), the festival was a vivid expression of the Pacific Islander people's history, culture, arts, crafts and cooking. Central to the festival was the visit to San Diego of the Hokule'a ship (photo above) - a symbol of exploration among Pacific Islanders.
The festival received a lot of support in San Diego city and county and has lead to steps towards Pacific Islander empowerment including the establishment of various new organizations and the placing of Pacific Islanders on city and county commissions.
After the success of this first festival the planning of the second festival is well under way. The following article about the Samoan people was written by Samoa Koria a member of the education committee of the 1995 festival and was chair of the 1996 festival.

Coming of Age in Samoa: A Psychological Study of Primitive Youth for Western Civilisation > Customer Review #1: Clearly Im Clueless

I cant see what is so bad about this book. I was disappointed that she left out several things that I thought was important, but ethnographers cant thing of everything (...) What I saw was a picture of a society on the very brink (but not yet) of being toppled by the intrusion of missionaries (as so many have been and continue to be). An interesting society. I also so many similarities to Malinowskis Trobriand work which I find intriguing. Yes, I am clueless. I enjoyed this book and used it, among other works, for research. I cant imagine why it would offend anyone. Her limitations made it impossible for this to be seen as an authoritative work, of course, but nobody is an authority, especially in the anthropological community, since culture is always in a constant state of evolution. So why the attacks? Would she be so attacked if she werent a woman? If she werent dead? So she blew some theories out of the water. I havent seen anybody come up with any evidence to support those theories since.

Star-Bulletin He sat at the side of the empress of Japan during the emperor's coronation and next to the queen of England when Prince Charles married. Malietoa Tanumafili II, head of state of Western Samoa, is the second longest-reigning monarch in the world next to the queen of Norway. But it's his humbleness that draws the love and respect of Samoans around the world. "I see myself as the servant of the people," said the 85-year-old head of state. He speaks in soft Samoan, his hands tracing his words in the air. Tanumafili is here as the guest of the Polynesian Cultural Center and will preside over next week's fire-dancing competition. The Samoan community in Hawaii has honored him at a dinner as well as Gov. Ben Cayetano. He has reigned for more than 50 years and served as head of state since 1962, when Western Samoa became an independent nation and joined the British Commonwealth.
