Fourteen degrees below the equator, it is the United States' southern-most territory. It is known as the heart of Polynesia. If you drew a triangle from Hawaii, New Zealand and Tahiti you would find Samoa in the middle. Western Samoa is a neighboring independent country that shares the same culture. American Samoa became an unorganized U.S. territory in 1900. The Samoas arguably represent the largest population of polynesian people and they take pride in a strong culture that has survived outside incursions amazingly well.

Introduction
Late in 1968 I went to Western Samoa to spend a year there photographing the people and their culture and doing anthropological research. My main residence was with a Samoan family I had met several years before. When I say "family," I use the term to mean something more than a nuclear family and something considerably less than an aiga or extended family. In fact, there were usually about 25 people in this living unit. They stayed primarily in one house in Leone, a rural, village-like setting on the outskirts of Apia, Western Samoa's capital. During that year, I ventured out and stayed in a number of other areas as well, including the island of Manono and Fa'a'la Village in Paulauli (Savai'i) and both Fasito'otai and Falealili on Upolu. After that year, I returned on other occasions to spend three months in the same areas, as well as six or seven times more to spend anywhere from a few days to a week or two. Whenever I stayed in Samoa, I usually kept my camera with me. I never knew what I might see and what photographic opportunities might appear, so I tried to remain ready. The photographs in this collection are a few of several thousand that I took.

Main article: History of Samoa Settled as early as 1000 BC , Samoa was "discovered" by European explorers in the 18th century. International rivalries in the latter half of the 19th century were settled by an treaty in which Germany and the US divided the Samoan archipelago. Shortly after the outbreak of World War I , in August 1914, New Zealand sent an expeditionary force to seize and occupy German Samoa. This was to stop German Samoa being used a naval refueling base in the Pacific. The German forces on the islands did not surrender, nor did they put up a fight.

Location: The Samoan Islands are located in the South Pacific about 1,800 miles east of New Zealand and 2,400 miles southwest of Hawaii. The islands are split into two groups, east and west. The eastern islands are a United States territory, while the western islands are an independent country. History: Daily Life: Most Samoans live in small seaside villages. They reside in thatched roof huts with their extended family. A chief and several village elders head the village, but each family takes care of itself. The coconut is a main staple as well as bananas and the taro root. Fish and pork are also part of their diet. The people speak the Samoan language during everyday life, while English is reserved for business or formal affairs. Almost 100% of the Samoan people are Christian and it plays a big part in their life. They attend church on Sundays, and many have a prayer curfew at night for 10 or 20 minutes. Samoa travel is about exploring. There are just two large islands in Independent Samoa (formerly Western Samoa) - Upolu Island (1115 sq. km) with its vibrant rainforest, coastal walks and gorgeous beaches and Savai'i Island (1700 sq. km) with its very traditional village life, big open spaces, lava fields and interesting sights. The two islands are separated by a 18 km straight and connected by ferry (4 per day) and flight from Apia. Two small islands lie in this straight ( Manono and Apolima) and four smaller islands just off the east coast of Upolu, only one of which is inhabited.
Organised day tours are a good way to get a feel for the country and offer by far the most convenient way of getting about the islands (public buses are very unreliable and self-driving can prove difficult - see getting around
By far the best way to get around Upolu and Savaii (and to Namua Island and Manono Island) is with the hop-on / hop-off service provided by Green Turtle Tours . This environmentally friendly company offers daily tours around both Upolu and Savai'i visiting the main scenic attractions with guided interpretations of the Samoan way of Life on the way and will drop you off and pick you up on request wherever you decide to set down for the night.
American Samoa
(77sq km), is a totally different travelling experience. The main island of Tutuila lies less than 100km to the east of Upolu, and the glorious Manu'a Group another 100km to the east. Tiny Rose and Swains atolls lie a further 100km east of Manu'a.

Pacific News member of Culture Gallery Introduction ANGLONESIA Anglonesia is a neologism used here to refer to Australia New Zealand and the United States in the Pacific (ANZUS). The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Samoa History The origins of Samoa are shrouded in an ambiguity that is pure Samoa. The most popular theory is that Samoans, like other Polynesians, originated from the East Indies, the Malay Peninsula or the Philippines, but Samoans tell a different story. Other Polynesians, they say, might have come from Asia but Samoans come from Samoa. They believe themselves to be the cradle of Polynesian culture, a race of people created by the god Tagaloa while he was cooking up the world. In fact the Samoan legend of the beginning of the world is startlingly similar to that told in Genesis. Despite its reputation as an exotic far-away land Samoa was in fact as busy as a shopping mall from the mid-1770s when trading ships, sailing along the spice route and looking for the Great Southern Land, popped in and out with monotonous regularity. Much of the early contact and bloody encounters between Samoans and Europeans took place in the islands that are now part of American Samoa but the islands of independent Samoa suffered the same diseases and acts of violence that came with the European ships. By the time the British arrived, looking for the troublesome Christian Fletcher and his band of merry mutineers, the Samoans were hardly in a welcoming mood. In the resulting head-to-head between the British and the Samoans, lives were lost on both sides and gave rise to the unwarranted reputation that Samoans were hostile and aggressive.

April 4, 2003 American Samoa by Yasir A. "American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the USA, but it is not under the jurisdiction of the US constitution" explains Deanna Swaney, the author of Samoa Western and American Samoa (126). American Samoa is made up of six small islands. They are namely, Swains Island, Ofu, Olesega, Manua group-Tau, Rose, Aunuu, the Samoan chain and Tutuila. It is located in the Southern central Pacific Ocean about 2,300 miles Northeast of Hawaii. It is also not far from New Zealand. As early as 1300 B.C., people were living on these chain of islands. They migrated from the nearby countries or Fiji and Hawaii. They brought with them their culture, which is visible today in the country. Jacob Roggeveen, a Dutch sailor, was the first European to discover the island of Samoa. He saw the island in 1722 but did not take a precise note and map of the island's geographical position. However, Luis Antoine de Bongainville, a French navigator visited the island forty six years later and recorded its accurate position helping other sailors after him. Great Britain, Germany and the United States of America all competed for a position in the newly found island. Each group had its own interest in the region. For example, America wanted a naval station at the island. By 1872, the Tutuila chiefs agreed with the American Navy to use Pago Pago as a coaling station.

Bender Trevor Humphries Trevor Michael During the first half of the twentieth century, Margaret Mead rose to prominence as an anthropologist for her work in the South Pacific. Mead was born in Philadelphia in 1901 and received her education from Columbia University earning degrees in Psychology and Anthropology. Her career began with field studies in the South Pacific on the islands of New Guinea, Bali, and Samoa. While conducting fieldwork in Samoa, Mead became interested in local adolescent behavior compared to the behavior in Western Culture. Her studies led her to the conclusion that adolescent behavior was affected by the culture that surrounded it. While Mead's findings in her book "Coming of Age in Samoa,", which was published in 1928, made a great impact on thinking of social scientists of the time, her studies have come under much recent scrutiny, most notably, by the criticism of anthropologist Derek Freeman. Freeman claims that from his investigation of Mead's fieldwork in Samoa that her conclusions of the adolescent behavior are at odds with relevant facts. He believes that her findings are the result of a hoaxing pulled over on her by native Samoans. In 1989 filmmaker Franz Heimans visited Samoa to make a film about Mead's fieldwork there in 1925 and 1926. Freeman accompanied Hiemans with hopes of finding someone to speak with about what Mead had done while she visited Somoa. Freeman came across two people who had direct connections with Mead. Galea'i Poumele, son of Fofoa who was one of Mead's closest friends at the time, and Fa'apua'a Fa'amu, who was her best friend while she was in Samoa.
