Catherine Booth , the daughter of a coachbuilder, was born in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in 1829. When she was a child the family moved to Boston, Lincolnshire and later they lived in Brixton, London . Catherine was a devout Christian and by the age of twelve she had read the Bible eight times. She had a social conscience from an early age. On one occasion she protested to the local policeman that he had been too rough on a drunken man he had arrested and frog-marched to the local lock-up. Catherine did not enjoy good health. At the age of fourteen she developed spinal curvature and four years later, incipient tuberculosis. It was while she was ill in bed that she began writing articles for magazines warning of the dangers of drinking alcohol. Catherine was a member of the local

William Stead, the son of a Congregational minister, was born in Embleton in 1849. William spent his childhood at Howden, about five miles from Newcastle . Educated at home by his father, William grew up with strong views on religion. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a merchant but this failed to interest him and he eventually became a journalist.
In 1871 he moved to Darlington where he became editor of the Northern Echo . Stead was a strict Puritan who favoured social reform. He declared soon after becoming editor of the newspaper, "the Press is the greatest agency for influencing public opinion in the world" and that "the true and only lever by which thrones and governments could be shaken and the masses of the people raised".
Stead successfully made the Northern Echo the most influential voice of Nonconformity in the North of England. His newspaper supported several causes and organisations, including universal education, votes for women, repeal of the

What is the Salvation Army? It's an international, evangelical branch of the Christian Church that now operates in over 100 countries. But what really is the Salvation Army? It's an orphan hugged, a derelict reclaimed, a battered woman sheltered, an addict renewed, a runaway restored, a starving family fed. It's an expression of God's love to suffering humanity - that's The Salvation Army! Service to those in need, regardless of race, colour, creed, sex or age, is a fundamental aspect of Salvation Army faith. And, over the years, in peace-time and war, in times of national disaster and personal need, this quality humanitarian service has given succeeding generations cause to support the Army's endeavours both financially and with volunteer service. We need your continued support to give families a second chance, meals to street kids, shelter to the homeless, and friendship to the lonely.

Welcome to The Salvation Army
Massachusetts Division Friday, June 11, 2004 Every day, 365 days a year, we're working hard in communities throughout Massachusetts. We're making a positive impact and changing the lives of thousands of individuals and families. You probably know that if they come to us hungry, we will feed them. If they don't have housing, we'll help them find housing. But we go far beyond addressing their immediate needs. We do our best to help people change their lives. We want to ensure that whatever has caused their current situation of need, we are addressing and preparing them for a brighter future. We help them find employment, teach them job skills and how to budget, and most importantly, how to become a stable family. It's our business: Changing Lives! In Joseph Livesey and seven Preston workingmen signed a pledge that they would never again drink alcohol. Other groups of working men followed the example of Livesey and his friends and by 1835 the British Association for the Promotion of Temperance was formed.
At first temperance usually involved a promise not to drink spirits and members continued to consume wine and beer. However, by the 1840s temperance societies began advocating teetotalism. This was a much stronger position as it not only included a pledge to abstain from all alcohol for life but also a promise not to provide it to others.
