White House: No deal with Salvation Army
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer By Major Garrett CNN White House Correspondent WASHINGTON (CNN) The White House on Tuesday denied cutting a deal to gain Salvation Army support of the president's faith-based initiative in exchange for a regulation protecting some religious charities' practice of not hiring homosexuals. "No. Absolutely not," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said when asked if there had been such a deal. "Never has been. Never has been." Meeting with GOP senators on Capitol Hill, Vice President Dick Cheney said the president's faith-based initiative does not require organizations to change their views. RESOURCES Message Board: Gay rights "A key part of the president's faith-based initiative is to make certain that in order to acquire or to participate in providing these social services with government funds, we not require fundamental changes in the underlying principles and organizing doctrines, if you will, of the organizations that participate," Cheney said. "That has been a consistent policy throughout, it is not intended to discriminate against anybody." At issue is a front-page story in Tuesday's edition of The Washington Post that asserts the Salvation Army vowed to lend its political support to the faith-based initiative in exchange for a new federal regulation that would protect it and other religious organizations from having to hire homosexuals or provide domestic partner benefits. Asked if the Salvation Army misread the administration's position, he said: "Correct. And they've been advised of that."

As early as 1880, we began to reach out to homeless and hungry men and women in New York City. In 1891, The Salvation Army opened its first men’s food and shelter depot in Greenwich Village, in New York City. Soon after, a shelter for women – called the Daybreak – opened in the Bowery section of the City. Our services have grown considerably since the 1880s. In the mid-1980's, New York City initiated efforts to privatize its homeless shelters. Contracting with such not-for-profit organizations as The Salvation Army, the City sought providers able to specialize in social services for New York’s needy and homeless populations. Building upon a history helping the homeless, the Greater New York Division began responding to proposals in 1987 to assume operation of New York City homeless shelters. We managed two of the first contracted shelters. Now we have grown to include 16 programs including:

About The Salvation Army The Salvation Army, founded in 1865, is an international religious and charitable movement motivated by love of God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity. This is expressed through a spiritual ministry which purposes are to preach the Gospel, disseminate Christian truths, supply basic human necessities, provide personal counseling and undertake the spiritual and moral regeneration and physical rehabilitation of all persons in need who come within its sphere of influence regardless of race, color, creed, sex, or age. A branch of the universal Christian Church, The Salvation Army is organized and operated in a quasi-military pattern. Its members include officers (clergy), soldiers/adherents (laity), members of varied activity groups and volunteers who serve as advisors, associates, and committed participants in its service.

Salvation Army
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Salvation Army is a Christian denomination , a charity and a social services organization. Tower of the Salvation Army International Headquarters in London The Salvation Army was founded in London , England by William Booth , who at that time was a Methodist minister. Then on July 5 he started the movement which was originally named the Christian Mission. The name was later changed to The Salvation Army in 1878 to match its recently adopted quasi-military style and outlook. The Salvation Army is led by a General , currently John Larsson The Salvation Army's main converts were at first alcoholics, drug addicts, prostitutes and other "undesirables" of society which the church at that time refused to have anything to do with. As a prophetic reminder to the rest of the Body of Christ, The Salvation Army decided not to practice baptism or to celebrate the Lord's Supper in any form. The Salvation Army grew rapidly, and as it did it also created friction among certain people within the society at that time. These people hired thugs to disrupt, any way they could, Salvation Army meetings and gatherings. These people grouped under the name of the Skeleton Army . Usual tactics used by this army were throwing rocks, rats, and tar, and physically assaulting members of The Salvation Army at these meetings.

Nonconformist is the name given to Protestants who are not members of the Church of England . This included Wesleyan Methodists Primitive Methodists Quakers Baptists ... Congregationalists , and members of the Salvation Army
The different Nonconformists campaigned together against the Test and Corporation Acts that had been passed by Parliament in the 17th century. These acts excluded Nonconformists from holding civil or military office. Nonconformists were also prevented from being awarded degrees by the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.
The Tories in the House of Commons tended to be in favour of these acts and so the Nonconformists mainly supported the Liberal Party who advocated civil and religious liberty. After the
