PTTC Home Solutions From the Field Based on a workshop sponsored by PTTC's Eastern Gulf Region on July 26, 2000 in Jackson, Mississippi. Material presented by Mark Rowan, Rowan Structural Consulting. BOTTOM LINE Recent developments in understanding of salt tectonics will facilitate oil and gas exploration and development in the Eastern Gulf Region. PROBLEM ADDRESSED Salt deformation plays a large role in the spatial and temporal distribution of reservoirs as well as hydrocarbon generation, migration, and entrapment. Breakthroughs in modern evaluation of salt tectonics include two basic concepts. First, differential loading drives salt tectonics and the process of diapirism is therefore more passive than had been believed. Second, lateral flow is locally important. A major component of salt tectonics is development of salt sheets, tongues, and allochthonous nappes. Passive diapirism, differential loading, extension, contraction, strike-slip faulting, and near-diapir faulting may trigger salt deformation. Research involving structural modeling integrated with seismic analysis and mapping is carried out by two industry-funded consortia, the Applied Geodynamics Laboratory and the Deep-Marine Depositional Margins Alliance, and by research groups carrying out basin analysis. Research topics include salt tectonics and shale tectonics on passive, active, and strike-slip continental margins, especially in West Africa, Trinidad, and the Gulf of Mexico. Up to six longitudinal basement faults are prersent in the zone of border faults of this rift. Their activity has been important in the formation of oil and gas pools. Fault I on the north and fault II on the south separate the border area of the basement outside the rift from the subsided part within the rift. Fault III separates this subsided part from a structurally higher area within the rift. The subsided part of the fault zones is more mobile, and within it are chains of downwarps. Faults IV, V, and VI form here smaller horsts and graben. Folds within the fault zones are caused by block faulting and by salt tectonics. Several groups of highs have been recognized. The first group includes folds associated with the main faults. The second is a chain of brachy-anticlinal highs located between faults I and II or above the latter. The third group includes inter-fault salt-assist highs, in some of which the salt has pierced into the Mesozoic-Cenozoic sediments. The fourth group are folds associated with highs on the Precambrian basement bounded by faults III and transverse faults. The history of development of the Kholm salt-assist high has been traced, and a relationship established between the faulting and salt tectonics. At the beginning of Zadon- Yeletsa time in the Devonian the single Kholm graben formed, bounded by faults II and VI, and was filled by up to 1850 m of salt. This block movement caused horizontal stresses sufficient for warping the strata of the downdropped block and to initiate salt tectonics.

Triassic and Jurassic extension created an elongate rift which has experienced thermal subsidence since the early Cretaceous. The buried rift contains many structures strongly influenced by halokinesis, and is dominated by sub-vertical, high-relief (up to 5km) salt diapirs that exhibit a long (>200Ma) and complex structural history. 9 salt diapirs have been studied using high-quality 3D seismic data, and all show common features related to the broad-scale evolution of the rift system: -Early-stage diapir evolution characterised by reactive formation of linear salt walls during Triassic and Jurassic regional extension. -Local salt migration fed from distinct salt-withdrawal cells which remained active until the end Early Cretaceous. Pre-salt structure played a key role in constraining the geometry of these features.

The McCully gas field area is located in the Late Devonian-Carboniferous Moncton Subbasin, immediately to the north and east of the town of Sussex. The area is of significant economic importance because of the presence of potash deposits in the Viséan Cassidy Lake Formation (Windsor Group) and the presence of natural gas associated with source rocks in the Tournaisian Albert Formation (Horton Group). A structural study of this area, incorporating field, seismic and borehole data, and supported by the New Brunswick Geological Surveys Branch and Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, is currently being undertaken by the author. Field observation coupled with seismic evidence shows that salt-linked thrust faults cut Cumberland Group rocks, indicating that salt movement occurred in post-Westphalian B time; an upper limit for the age of salt movement has not been established. Salt movement has therefore not significantly affected patterns of sediment deposition within the basin, but has modified the structure of the basin in important ways. Bounding ranges on the east and west are underlain by Tertiary strata and Jurassic rocks underlie low hills on the eastern side of the valley. The map pattern thus suggests that the valley is a horst rather than a graben! We interpret the valley to have formed along a normal fault but with an unconventional geometry owing to effects of weak and buoyant evaporitic mudstone in the footwall block. In eastern Sevier Valley, steeply tilted fault blocks of Tertiary strata sit upon a gently inclined, five- to ten-meter thick zone of red clay-rich rock that grades downward into the Jurassic Arapien Shale. This red zone persists at the upper contact of the Arapien Shale for more than 50 km along strike. Faults cutting overlying Tertiary strata terminate downward at the red zone and require the contact to be tectonic. Diehl et al. (1998) interpreted the contact as a pressure-solution surface rather than a fault, but close examination reveals the zone to be fault breccia and gouge that contain slickensides and top-to-the-east S-C fabrics in gypsum beds and mudstone. We therefore interpret the contact to be a top-to-the-east low-angle normal fault that emplaced Tertiary strata upon Jurassic.

Dalhousie University: Post Doctoral Fellowship in Salt Tectonics
This position involves structural and seismic interpretation, analogue and geomechanical modelling of extensional continental margins with particular emphasis on salt tectonic processes. Candidates must have a strong background in tectonophysics, crustal deformation processes and tectonics of passive continental margins, and experience in structural/seismic interpretation. Additional skills in analogue modelling, material sciences, and software development are an asset. As a member of the Analogue Modelling Team the PDF will participate in the design and technical development and maintenance of the hardware and software and will conduct experiments in various applications, help supervising graduate students, and interact with the Geodynamics Group at Dalhousie University performing concomitant research on the same subject through finite-element thermomechanical modelling. The position is advertised for, initially 2 years, at the Post Doctoral Fellow level (requiring Ph.D.), with salary up to $Can.36,000/yr. The starting date is 1st of July 2004, or by arrangement.
