Sailors and Sponsors Line Up to Support Disabled In WYRF/Ullman Charity Regatta Billed as one of the only, if not the only "fully inclusive" charity regatta in the nation, the Women's Yacht Racing Feet (WYRF) of San Diego's WYRF/Ullman Charity Regatta (June 13, 2004) to benefit the San Diego-based CHALLENGED AMERICA program of sailors with disabilities has attracted some of San Diego's top sailors and boats, and a host of small business and corporate sponsors from around the nation. "Each year it seems like the support for the WYRF/Ullman Charity Regatta and CHALLENGED AMERICA has grown," said Greg Scott, a CHALLENGED AMERICA sailor having juvenile rheumatoid arthritis throughout his body since he was 3 years of age. "It's going to be an exciting regatta, and having racers with disabilities also competing in the event, brings a new dimension to such a 'charity regatta to benefit others in the community.' I can't wait to get on the water and race with everyone else. Only in sailing does this happen...the inclusion of competitive sailors with disabilities, ,sailing alongside and against sailors without disabilities." The WYRF/Ullman Charity Regatta begins on Thursday, June 10, with a pre-race happy hour, complete with appetizers, at Fiddler's Green Restaurant, on Shelter Island 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. At this social event, skippers, crews, and friends will be able to purchase time allowances all to benefit CHALLENGED AMERICA to enhance their favorite boat's (crew's) final standings in the race on Sunday.

The US Naval Sailing Association (USNSA) is an organization of military-affiliated, predominantly Navy members formed to promote fleet readiness and personal professionalism. It works to strengthen naval ties to our national maritime heritage by encouraging and assisting Commanding Officers in promoting sailing and boating as part of their training and recreational programs. USNSA administers the Navy and DoD sailing standards and qualification system. Three categories of members make up USNSA: Command Members, Branch Members, and Individual Members. 3. There are about 40 branches of USNSA, usually associated with a marina. However, not all branches are associated with a marina nor do all marinas have branches. Most branches fall into one of three types: Sailing Clubs, Yacht Clubs, or Sailing Associations. Branches usually consist of individuals, both active and retired, who band together to promote sailing activities in their areas. Commanding Officers are expected and encouraged to recognize any local USNSA branch as their advisory group, and most do so.

Boaters in particular enjoy the solitude By Lynn Arave Deseret News staff writer The Great Salt Lake has been called "America's Dead Sea," but some people are finding plenty of lively recreation on or near its salty waters. Boaters in particular enjoy the solitude the lake offers. Students from Sunset Elementary in Davis County bike along shore. Paul Baker, Deseret News "You have a lot of room out there," said Bob Welty of Layton, a frequent sailboater on the lake. He and his wife, June, believe the lake's uncrowded waters offer a peaceful contrast to the overcrowded freshwater reservoirs to the east. They've been sailing their 22-foot-long, cream-colored sailboat Windrush on the lake for five years. "It's prettier here," June Welty said, contrasting the marina at Antelope Island to the south shore marina.
