Sailing ship
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Server will be down for maintenance on 2004-06-11 from about 18:00 to 18:30 UTC. A sailing ship is a wind -powered ship . Historically, sailing ships were the primary means of transportation across long distances of water (e.g. rivers lakes oceans ) before the invention of the first workable steam engines . They were used for carrying cargo , passengers, mail, supplies etc. In modern times sailing ships are less common but are still used in some parts of the world, such as the Indian Ocean, as commercial vessels. There are also many tall ship training vessels that provide recreational sailing. Sailing ships were also used for military purposes. The Spanish convoys bringing back gold and silver from the newly discovered Americas needed protection from the pirates . Large sea battles were fought between the United Kingdom France Spain and the Netherlands There are many different types of sailing ships, but they all have certain basic things in common. Every sailing ship has a hull rigging ; at least one mast to hold up the sails that use the wind and power the ship. Ballast weighs down the bottom of the ship, so the wind does not push the ship over. At one time the convention was that only a vessel with three or more masts was called a "ship", a single or two-masted vessel being called a "boat", but little notice is now taken of this supposed rule.

Navigation Lights
Navigating at night requires special care and attention. Vessels that operate from sunset to sunrise, whether at anchor or underway, must carry and exhibit the correct lights. A vessel is underway when not anchored, moored to the shore or aground. Navigation lights must also be displayed during daylight hours in periods of restricted visibility. All boats, whether used for commercial purposes or for pleasure boating, must comply with the regulations concerning lighting.

Summer is near! As the quarter is winding down summer is coming closer. Spring was a great quarter for the Sailing Team. We had many regattas and a lot of fun. Experiences at the regattas helped the team improve on the water, but off the water we also worked on a lot of things to build this team into something bigger. We had two successful fundraisers and are looking to have more in the fall. Thanks to Bruce Edwards and West Marine our goal towards two FJ's has been cut in half. With all the fundraising we are half way to the second boat. Over the summer we are all returning home and everybody seems to be sailing somewhere, improving to be better in the fall. We are expecting around eight new people in the fall. This is great for our team because we are now able to participate in more events. Our future looks very promising. I hope everybody has a great summer and we will see you all back in the Fall. Thanks a lot for all of your support.
Information About The Team The sailing team meets on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3pm to sunset. College Sailing is a coed sport and we race against the top teams on the West Coast. Collegiate sailing also has a few separate women's events to promote the involvement of women in the sport. The Sailing Season is from October to April. Regattas are held on weekends, so no school is missed and the competitors can all maintain a full academic load. Hospitality is usually provided by the host university and free of charge. Teams usually bring their own boats, and we are lucky enough to have a team car to tow our boats. Regattas are a lot of fun on and off the water; we race both Saturday and Sunday so the teams usually get together Saturday night for a social event.

Navigation and seamanship courses are usually conducted ashore and are included in the AYF sailing curriculum taught by sailing schools. Power boat training centres, some TAFE Colleges and the Coastguard conduct courses too. Sailing Schools are listed on the Boating OZ Training index. Power Boating
Power boat training centres and some sailing schools and clubs offer power boat handling courses. Navigation and seamanship courses are the same as those for sailors. In NSW, the skipper of any powered vessel which exceeds 10 knots must have a licence from the NSW Waterways Authority . The multiple choice test and licence costs $47 and takes about 20 - 30 minutes. Bookings should be made the day before. Test centres are at Kent Street in the city, Blacktown, Hornsby, Miranda, Pittwater and Rozelle Bay. A study book is available free from the Waterways Authority. There is a plan to introduce a national Australian power boat licence. Sailing Schools are listed on the Boating OZ Training index. Some companies teach power boat handling too.

Recreational harbour operations and maintenance activities Background Recreational activities in marine SACs In many cases, recreational harbours are not in a class of their own, with recreational use merging with other harbour activities. For instance, Cowes Harbour accommodates marinas, ferries, commercial shipping, ship manufacturing and gravel quays. The Hamble, although predominantly recreational, also includes fishing boats and yards that maintain all sorts of crafts. In Portsmouth Harbour, recreation sits together with naval installations and commercial shipping and fishing activity (Quinn BMIF personal communication 1998). Different types of recreational activity occurring in a selection of marine SACs and an indication of the types of facilities and capacity of recreational harbours within them are shown in Table 4.

I thought of all my other boats and all the other summers of sailing, dating way back to when I used to go out with my father in a cranky overcanvased catboat we had when I was a little girl in the early part of the century. My father, a reckless enthusiast when it came to a sailboat, found me a most satisfactory companion because I had not sense enough to be frightened.

Sail Design and Construction – by Elliott/Pattison Sail Makers
Building good sails is a combination of technology, art, and most importantly, human interaction. Before we start any design process it is most important to spend time with the customer so that we can fully understand what his needs and expectations are.
We start with determining if the sail is for grand prix racing, club racing, racing and recreational sailing, recreational sailing, or offshore cruising? Then we need to know how long a customer expects a sail to last. This is a big factor in deciding what the best options of sail materials and cut are for a given customer.
Step two is proper measurement of the boat. In addition to actual sail dimensions, which may come from measurements or rating certificates, we also measure for sail construction details such as cutbacks, sail slide sizes, and luff type. For mainsails we measure mast rake, mast pre-bend, mast bend with different amounts of backstay and runner tensions, and backstay offsets. For genoas we measure the track locations and width for sheeting angles, spreader locations and lengths, and shroud and chainplate locations.
Once the 3 dimensional mold is set the final profile can be calculated so that the sail will fit any girth and rule restrictions. Panels are then laid out over the mold in the computer memory to keep thread alignment in the material aligned with the load paths in the sail. Seam allowances, tablings, and details such as batten pockets, reef points, and draft stripes are added to the design and then the exact shape for each panel in the sail is calculated.
