Credit: MIT Museum The MIT Sailing Pavilion, the first facility constructed for college sailing, was built in 1935. It is now known as the birthplace of today's collegiate sailing. A number of colleges had sailing clubs in the late 1800s; however, these were primarily social clubs consisting of private boat owners. The first ten Dinghy Championships of the newly organized Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association ( ICYRA ) were sailed on the Charles River in MIT's fleet of cat-rigged, wooden Tech Dinghies. To this day, MIT continues to host more college regattas than any other site in the country. In the fall of 1994 it hosted the ICYRA 's first annual Women's Singlehanded Championship in Laser Radials. MIT provides (without charge) practice time for local colleges and high schools who do not have boats and sites of their own. Currently, the sailing teams from the following colleges and universities practice and race from the MIT Pavilion: Brandeis Northeastern , and Wellesley College MIT has over 100 sailboats in its fleet . The Tech Dinghies (designed by the MIT Naval Architecture Department Aleida Built in 1935 and later named after one of its founders, Jack Wood, the MIT Sailing Pavilion continues to hold more collegiate regattas than any other site in the US.

History of Sailing in Victoria
The sport of sailing in Victoria dates back to 1859; the first recorded sailing competition was held in Esquimalt by the Royal Navy, but failed due to lack of wind. Steamboat racing was also popular around this time. An interest in sailing was renewed in 1888, when eleven Victoria sailors decided that a sailing race should be part of the city’s celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24th. The race became the highlight of the annual celebration and it was not long before sailors from American ports on Puget Sound began to compete in the race, making the event international. The race was so popular that a decision was made to form a local yacht club to extend the racing season beyond one day. During the 1920's, fleets of International 14's and Stars regularly competed. Since 1930, Victoria has been host to the Swiftsure International Yacht Race. Beginning with an entry of only four boats, Swiftsure has become the largest annual offshore yacht racing event held in the Pacific Northwest, with a competitive fleet of 450 first-rate offshore racing yachts. Also, during the prohibition in the 1920’s and early 1930’s, the waters between Vancouver Island and southwestern BC were very active when mother ships would off-load cargo worth millions of dollars to high-speed yachts known as rum-runners. During the two World Wars local sailors and members of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, many of whom were former naval officers, offered lectures on seamanship and navigation and organized a flotilla of pleasure boats which patrolled the coastal waters off Victoria on the prowl for enemy submarines. Six Meters, Dragons, Lightnings and Snipes were in vogue and popular for racing during the years following the Second World War.

Paul commented, "I am overjoyed with my performance at this event and that I will be going to Athens this summer. I have trained hard and come back from a disappointing result at the world championships last year and just feel relieved that the trials and selection process is over and I can now get on with training for the world championships and the Games itself". Paul Goodison, who is currently ranked number three in the world, won six out of the eleven races. He won the event by nineteen points from Ed Wright. The pressure was felt on the final day and the last race of the regatta took five attempts to get underway.
Fellow Laser sailor Ed Wright put up a great challenge to Paul Goodison, scoring only two results outside the top five, but it was not enough to beat Paul. Dan Holman was also at the top of the fleet in nearly every race and fought hard to finish in third place overall. The final results were: 1, Paul Goodison, Ulley SC

Chinese sailors may still lack experiences but they are no longer the newcomers in the Olympics Games and are determined to make China a powerhouse in sailing, said a Chinese sailing official here on Wednesday.
China made an impressive improvement in sailing in the Busan Asian Games by grabbing six out of fifteen gold medals, together with four silvers and one bronze.
Yao Xinpei, the leader of Chinese sailing teams, said, "Our sailors have gained a lot of experiences these past three years. After the success in the Asiad, our aim will be an Olympic gold medal."
Chinese sailors have taken part in five Olympic Games since 1984 but never won a gold medal. The best result for Chinese sailors was a silver medal in Barcelona in 1992.
Yao said that the young Chinese team, which has an average age of 24, was aiming at making history in Athens Olympics in 2004.

Fowle Trophy, awarded annually to the best overall sailing team in the nation. Only three other teams have ever won both honors in the same year. The team repeated as the Fowle Trophy winner in 1988 and in 1998, and has been second in that competition three times. Yet the sailing team has been recognized as a champion for many years. The team was formed in 1964 and was a founding member of the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) in that same year. Since 1978, the team has qualified twenty-one times for all annual national collegiate sailing championships, winning eight of those events. During that time the team produced more than thirty All-Americans and three Collegiate Sailors-of-the-Year. Many team alumni have found success at various national class championships and in international and Olympic competition. In the world of college sailing, the College of Charleston has developed a very special winning tradition.
