History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

Athens hosts Olympic test regatta
The regatta is the first official test event of the 2004 Olympic Games ATHENS, Greece The countdown to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens has begun with a practice regatta at the Agios Kosmas sailing centre. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and race organisers scheduled the dress rehearsal for both sailors and officials. The aim is to allow race officials to detect any potential problems and to give sailors a feel of the wind and sea conditions to help design their boats for the event. The Greek organising committee (ATHOC) has been under considerable pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to get some of the infrastructure and stadium building projects underway. YOUR SAY E-mail us with your views on the world of sailing But planning difficulties as well as a downturn in the sponsorship forecasts created by the economic impact of the events of the September 11 attacks in the United States have meant many of the projects have had to be downsized.

Sunday, October 1
SAILORS BEAM WITH PRIDE Breezing to victory: Great Britain's Iain Percey, competing at his first Olympics, on his way to another sailing gold in the single-handed Finnclass. Picture: Mike Hewitt BRITAIN'S sailors felt the warm breeze of glory as they added two more medals to an already staggering total. Iain Percy's gold in the single-handed Finn class, plus a silver for Ian Walker and Mark Covell in the Star keelboat, rounded off an almost perfect Olympic regatta. One accolade said it all. When the British team entered the final press conference at the Rushcutter's Bay marina, hundreds of fellow competitors and journalists spontaneously rose and applauded a group which has dominated the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour. For Percy, sailing at his first Olympics and just 24, it was a moment that allowed him to uncork the anxieties he had been concealing all week. He went into the final day's races with a 20-point cushion over nearest rival Frederik Loof of Sweden. "It looked simple on paper but it certainly didn't feel it," admitted Percy, wreathed in smiles and dripping wet after being thrown off the dock by jubilant teammates. "I was very nervous before the first race." Those close to the sailor say he did a terrific job from last weekend onwards, hiding from his rivals how stressed he was at leading almost from the first race. Certainly, in media interviews the normally voluble economics graduate was virtually monosyllabic, his face resembling an Easter Island statue.

A POCKET HISTORY
While yachting was not one of the original games of the Olympics in Ancient Greece, it was probably there that the competitive aspect of the past time of sailing started to develop.
In more Recent times, the first of the Modern Olympics was held in Greece in 1896, the planned Olympic Yachting regatta was cancelled due to very rough weather. So Paris hosted the very first Olympic Sailing regatta during the second games in the modern era. Since then, sailing has been held at all but the 1904 Games in the inland city of St. Louis USA.
Fiercely competed for, Olympic medals are an indication of a skill level and mental dedication demanded in no other Olympic discipline. No other sport demands 15 hours of concentration combined with physical exertion during one Olympic competition. Only in sailing, can 1 minute's loss of concentration over 7 days of racing be the difference between Gold and 4th.
Competitors from France and Sweden have competed in all but one of the Olympic Regattas. The USA and Norway have each won 16 Gold medals followed Great Britain with 14 , France with 12, Denmark with 10 and Sweden and Spain with 9 each.

Olympic sailing test causes delay
Lasers put to the test near Athens ATHENS, Greece Construction deadlines for the 2004 Athens Olympics could be missed because of a practice sailing regatta, the Greek government says. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and race organisers held an eight-day dress rehearsal last month for the 2004 Olympics regatta so race officials could spot any problems in its planning. But Yiannis Alevras, a deputy minister in charge of Olympic planning, told The Associated Press the sailing regatta at the Agios Kosmas sailing centre had delayed construction at the marina and an adjacent sports complex by a month. The Greek organising committee (ATHOC) has been under considerable pressure to get some of the infrastructure and stadium building projects under way with the Games less than two years away. YOUR SAY E-mail us with your views on the world of sailing The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has repeatedly emphasized Athens, the ancient birthplace of the Games, has no margin for more delays or disruptions in projects.

Award inspires Olympic success
Bekatorou and Tsoulfa had a victorious season Story Tools
LIMASSOL, Cyprus Winning the award for World Sailor of the Year has inspired Greek sailors Sofia Bekatorou and Emilia Tsoulfa to aim high at the 2004 Olympic Games. The awards were made during the annual International Sailing Federation (ISAF) conference in Cyprus on Tuesday in recognition of outstanding sailing achievement from September 2001 to August 2002. On receiving the women's award Bekatorou and Tsoulfa said: "For us, being voted as the winners is not only a great honour for us, since Emilia and I represent a country that has a great history in sailing, but it is also a great motive and incentive towards the 2004 Athens Olympic Regatta.'" The Greek female team was nominated in recognition of their domination of the 470 class, the Olympic women's double-handed dinghy. Their opening season win at the SPA Regatta in Holland set the standard, and was followed by wins at virtually every ISAF Grade 1 and Grade 2 event they have entered in the past 12 months.

Olympic champ quits America's Cup
Ainslie said small boat sailing suited him LONDON, England (CNN) - British Olympic champion sailor Ben Ainslie has quit his America's Cup team to return to Olympic racing. Ainslie, who won the Olympic Gold medal in the Laser Class in the 2000 Sydney games, had joined the OneWorld America's Cup challenge 18 months ago. However, he announced that he would leave the team despite learning a lot during his time with it and enjoying the "remarkable" experience. "I realise that the world of small boat sailing, where I have spent my sailing career, is where I want to put my efforts at this point in my life," he said on the OneWorld website. The chief executive office of the OneWorld syndicate, Gary Wright, said the team wished Ainslie well. "Ours is a team of diverse age, nationality and sailing background. When we built this team we knew we were asking certain individuals to take roles they were unaccustomed to and there would be people who would realise it wasn't quite the right fit for them," he said.

Over the past four years, Tom Brown has led a three-person team in the 27' Soling class sailboat in preparation for the 2002 Olympics. Simultaneously, he began a 2.4mR class campaign to compete in the Paralympics. In the Soling campaign, up against America's Cup skipper Ed Baird and other sailing elite, Brown's crew finished among the top six boats at the Olympic Trials, and conceded the Olympic berth to Soling World Champion Jeff Madrigali. In the 2.4mR Trials, competition was just as furious between many long-time sailors. After a seven race series, Tom Brown won the regatta by a record nine points and headed for the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia where he took home the Bronze medal. Since 1952, the Paralympics have followed two weeks after the Olympics, and have included identical sports in identical venues. The difference; all of the atheletes have some sort of physical disability ranging from blindness to quadriplegia. The 2000 Paralympics involved over 4,000 athletes from 125 countries competing in 41 sports for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Tom Brown proudly represented the United States, returning with a Bronze medal inthe 2.4mR event. Having lost his left leg when he was 10 years old, Tom has been forced to make many adaptions and concessions during both sailing campaigns, but has never changed his goal of proving that he ranks among the best sailors in the world. This is the focus of his

Athens stages Olympic rehearsal
Lasers put to the test near Athens ATHENS, Greece Sailors contended with light and shifting winds at the Athens pre-Olympic test regatta at the Agios Kosmas sailing centre south of the Greek capital. The official Pre-Olympic regatta will not be held until August 2003, but the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Greek organisers decided to stage a practice regatta this year. Scheduled for the same week as the 2004 Games themselves in the Saronic Gulf, the test regatta is designed as a dress rehearsal so that competitors and race officials can get a true test of the onshore logistics and on the water conditions. The Greek organising committee (ATHOC) has been under considerable pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to get the infrastructure and stadium building projects underway.
