Olympic Sailing Classes - February 04, 2004
Throughout February we will have a look at sailing at the Olympic level. We'll look at the classes, potential winners, the venue and the history of Olympic sailing. This year's Olympic regatta is from 14 to 28 August in Athens, Greece. In 2004 there will be 11 classes that will sail 9 different classes of boats. Three of these classes are for single handed sailors. Most familiar is the Laser one of the most popular sailboats ever. The Laser is 13 feet and 150,000 of them exist worldwide. The Finn is the singlehanded class for men. In the past sailors such as Paul Elvstrom and Russell Coutts have sailed this demanding boat. The Europe is the single handed class for women. The boat is similar to the Finn, but allows women in the 100 to 175 pound range to compete successfully. The and the 49er are dinghy classes for 2 person crews. The 15 foot 470 has seperate classes for men's and women's team. It has been an Olympic class since 1976.

She supported the Australian Olympic Sailing Team from 1994 by the means of event regatta cover, Sports Medicine professional network strategy and sports specific educational workshops. She attended the 1996 Olympic Games as Australian Sailing Team Physio.
Sue is now involved as a member of the International Sailing Federation's Medical Commission as Sailing Physiotherapist and advises internationally on injuries in sailing. She continues to present "Functional Analysis of the Biomechanics of Sailing" workshops at various locations such as the Spa Olympic Classes Regatta this year on behalf of ISAF and also independently.
Sue herself has been extensively involved in the sport of sailing at the technical level. An appreciation of the sport itself has been effective in educating both sailors and support professionals in combining an understanding of 'boat mechanics' with a knowledge of 'bio-mechanics' and vice versa.

The Americans dominated most of the athletics events (they won 9 out of the 15 events), while the Germans were superior in gymnastics, and the French in cycling. However the disappointment of the Greeks was soon forgotten when Spyros Louis managed to win the marathon.
Following the success of these first games, the Greek proposed that all subsequent Games were to take place in Greece. But this was not approved, and it was then agreed that the second Games were to be held in Paris as recognition of the hard work done by Baron de Coubertin. top
Paris 1900 These Games took part at the same time when the World Fair was being organized, and the organizers of this Fair, did all they could so that the Olympic Games would not steal the show. The Paris Games lasted 5 months, and because of this the interest in the Games were not high. No adequate sports stadia were built and the Games were held at the track of the Racing Club de France at the Bois de Boulogne. However the standard of the athletes was already getting better. Water polo was one of the sports in this edition.

Australian women poised to take sailing gold

KERRY O'BRIEN: Water polo's not the first time women have had to fight for Olympic inclusion.
Despite a hundred-year tradition, women sailors had to wait until Seoul in 1988 and tonight two Australian women are poised to take Olympic gold.
Belinda Stowell and Jenny Armstrong are just one race away from clinching victory in the 470 class and a special place in Australian Olympic history.
It will be doubly sweet if the men's 470 team can replicate their performance to end a 30-year drought in men's sailing.
Michael Troy reports.
JENNY ARMSTRONG, 470 SAILOR: The 470s are a lot more sturdy, so we can go offshore and we sail in big winds, big waves as well as light winds and flat water, so across the range.
But most of it comes down to us and our skills and our teamwork together and keeping your head cool at the right critical moment.
MICHAEL TROY: And that's exactly what Australia's two best female sailors have been doing.
With just one race to go, Jenny Armstrong and Belinda Stowell are in with a big chance to make Olympic history for Australia. If you win a medal, do you think it's going to really boost the image of sailing?

The following are actual (gif) image copies of an original document typed by Len Morris around 1963 on International Moth Class History. Click here for a Moth Design Guide (in German) but feel free to use AltaVista's Babel Fish to translate the page to english. Moth History Summary The International Moth holds the current world record for the furthest south a sailing craft has ever ventured. A photo of the Moth, designed by Hal Wagstaff and built by his brother Gary in Wellington NZ, hangs even today in the Antartic base at McMurdo Sound. The King of Siam once sailed the Thai Moth he built and designed himself, in a Moth regatta in the UK. It all began in 1928 when the late Len Morris built a cat rigged (single sail) flat bottomed scow to sail on Andersons' Inlet at Inverloch, a seaside resort, 130km from Melbourne in Australia. She was hard chined, was eleven foot long, and carried 80 sq ft in single mainsail. The craft was named "Olive" after his wife. The constuction was timber with an internal construction somewhat like Hargreave's box kite.

(the Shoreham Sailing Club story continued) We were lucky as in 1956 the new coal burning power station came into operation, the harbour mouth nearly doubled in width to allow colliers access, prior to this it was often difficult to get in and out. We were able to get free of charge the ash from the power station, at that time they were more that happy to dump the ash on our land. The area was raised many feet and it proved to be a good fill, we finished it off with a grass tennis court taken form a garden in Woodley Road, Worthing. We made a rolled wooden slipway which we used for many years, each weekend we would unroll this cumbersome thing , it was very unsatisfactory but in those days Merlin Rockets had handles. It was hard work hauling them up and down the beach. The 'new' Shoreham Sailing Club building at Soldiers Point, constructed in 1960, with the help of a gravedigger who did a fine job digging a cess pit in the shingle!

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Sailing A guide to the Olympic sport of Sailing Competition details The different crafts used for sailing at the Olympic Games can be grouped into four main types: Mistral The Mistral is a type of windsurfer, consisting of a board with a mast and sail. The sailor controls the mast and sail with arms and steers with body weight, moving in a standing position. Dinghy Finn, Europe, Laser, 49er and 470 classes are dinghies, characterised by a lifting centreboard and have either a single sail (una) rig, for the Finn, Europe and Laser or two sail (sloop) rig for the 470 class. 470s and the high performance 49er's also have an additional downwind sail called a spinnaker. Dinghies are steered by a rudder and the crew use their body weight as leverage to counterbalance forces developed by the rig. At the Olympic Games, the Finn is used only in men's events, whilst the Europe only in women's events. The 470 is a men's and women's event, the Laser and 49er's are open events. Keel boats The Soling and Star classes are both keel boats. Keel boats have a ballasted fin fixed below the hull (keel) and the Soling has a spinnaker. Soling and Star are both open events at the Games. The medals in the sailing class are decided by a match racing knock-out competition.

About Us
News Contact Details Committee Members ... Home History of the Club The Sandy Bay Sailing Club started life on 1 March 1948 as the Sandy Bay Dinghy Club operating from Red Chapel Beach, half a kilometre or so towards the city from our current location. The Club moved to Long Point and the current clubhouse in the early 1960s. The clubhouse has been extensively modified since then to provide comprehensive facilities for its 1990s members. Long Point provides the Club with a unique environment where races can be conducted in clear view of the clubhouse and the beach while at the same time offering fair courses in all but the most demanding conditions. Over the years the Club has catered for a wide range of yacht classes. By far the most enduring is the International Cadet. The Cadet, crewed by two junior (U/18) sailors, is supported as a training class by the single-handed International Optimist. Both of these boats are ideal trainers and both are supported by full international status, with the World Championship as the pinnacle in each. The International Cadet World Championship has been conducted at Sandy Bay twice in the Club's history; the first in 1969-70 and the second in 1994-5. Over a dozen countries sent teams of up to 7 boats to contest this keenly fought series in typically-testing Derwent River conditions.
