OLYMPIC HISTORY But for inclement weather in Athens, sailing would have been among the sports to join the Olympiad from the start. However, Paris in 1900 is where it all began. Sailing is the holder of a unique record in Olympic history; between 1964 and 1996, Hubert Raudaschl, of Austria, competed in nine Olympic Games, more than any other competitor ever has across all sports. The nature of the sport is such that age appears no barrier to long-term success. Magnus Konow, of Norway, Elvstrom, and Durwood Knowles, of the Bahamas, share the record for the longest Olympic careers - 40 years - with Ivan Osiier, the Danish fencer.

Wind problems mean only three of eight classes get races off in first day of yachting competition. By James Pilcher
Savannah News-Press After waiting years, decades even lifetimes for this moment, many Olympic sailors postponed their dreams one more day. Because of another round of thunderstorms, only three of eight classes set to begin competition in the Olympic regatta Monday got races in before the rains and lightning began. ''It's pretty frustrating, to prepare four years for this and not get to race on the first day,'' said Mexico's Laser entry Antonio Goeters. ''But then again, it makes things exciting.'' And while there wasn't much racing, Wassaw Sound and the nearby Atlantic definitely were exciting, if dangerous places to be Monday afternoon. Winds never reached a danger point, but visibility was near zero in the downpour, and lightning flashed almost constantly for 30 minutes. ''You could see it building all afternoon,'' New Zealand Mistral sailor Aaron McIntosh said. ''And when it broke, it really broke.''
