Chapter 21: East Africa
"Rwanda's Mountain Gorillas" Introduction

For nearly 20 years, researcher Dian Fossey lived among Rwanda's mountain gorillas. She documented their lives, habits, and habitat. When she realized that the mountain gorillas were headed toward extinction, she began a worldwide effort to save them. Raising money herself, she was able to start an anti-poaching campaign. Through her efforts the decline in mountain gorillas was stopped, and today they are gaining in number. Lesson Description
Students will visit two Web sites in this lesson. The first explores the mountain gorilla, its habitat in the Virungas of Rwanda, and the effects of civil war on this endangered species. The second is the site of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. After browsing these sites, students will answer several questions, and then create a flyer promoting efforts to save the mountain gorilla. National Geography Standards:
Standard 14: The geographically informed person knows and understands how human actions modify the physical environment.

Rwanda, Ten Years Later: Justice Is Elusive, Despite Peace Stefan Lovgren
    for National Geographic News
April 6, 2004 At the airport the cab drivers never hustled me for my business. On the road into Kigali, the capital, there never seemed to be any traffic. I rarely heard music playing. The place always seemed eerily quiet, reserved, almost lethargic. How could this be the country where 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed during a hundred-day spasm of ethnic slaughter ten years ago? Read the full At a memorial south of Kigali, Rwanda, skulls mark the country's 1994 genocide, which left 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus dead in the central African nation. Photograph by Stefan Lovgren More News Kids News The Environment Travel National Geographic Channel Special Series Emerging Explorers TravelWatch National Geographic Out There Oceans ... Pulse of the Planet The genocide was ignited by the death of Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above the Kigali airport on April 6, 1994. Soon, the streets filled with murderous Hutu militia known as the Interahamwe, or "those who work together."

Rwanda, a fascinating country at the heart of Africa, under the Equator, under the sun, is characterised by hills and mountains. It is 900 to 4,000 m above sea level. The relief of this 26,338 km² country comes from the numerous moves of the African plaque. 50 million years ago, the ones of the African "Rift Valley" caused the emergence, in the West, of the Zaire-Nile mountainous Ridge, which reaches its highest point of more than 3,000 m at Mount Muhungwe, and stretches to the chain of Birunga volcanoes, the shelter of the last mountain gorillas. At the centre of the country, numerous hills are scattered over a large altitude plateau, to which Rwanda owes its nickname: "Country of one thousand hills". Rwanda on the stream Photo J-C Scholle
Living near lakes... Climate: between "Itumba" and "Umuhindo" The very numerous water resources (lakes, rivers...) are the result of the very humid climate of this country. The annual average rainfall is about 1,400 mm/year. These precipitations feed six catchment areas, with large annual average hydraulic specific outflows, that is 7 to 14.8 l/s/km², which makes irrigation possible (40 km²).

    I. CASE BACKGROUND
    1. Abstract
    2. Description
Rwanda is a small, land-locked country, resource poor, sub-Saharan African country situated immediately south of the Equator, bordering on Zaire, Uganda, Tanzania, and Burundi. Ecologically, Rwanda is divided into twelve agro-ecological zones, with respect to farming practices and climatic characteristics. Often called "the Land of a Thousand Hills," a majority of Rwanda's population lives and farms at elevations between 1300 and 2300 meters above sea level. Rwanda is dominated by mountain ranges and highland plateaus of the great watershed between the Nile and the Zaire river basins. Intensive culture is especially prevalent where farms have been subdivided several times as they pass from one generation to anther. In many cases, the inherited farm lots are too small to support a family, averaging less than 1.2 ha. Subsequently, farmers attempt to compensate by growing more than one crop on the same land in very short cycles, often without adding natural fertilizers to enrich the soil. This fragmentation of family holdings through generational transfers has led to a severe decline in agricultural production, resulting in malnutrition and soil exhaustion.
