Rwanda, Ten Years Later: Justice Is Elusive, Despite Peace Stefan Lovgren
for National Geographic News
April 6, 2004 At the airport the cab drivers never hustled me for my business. On the road into Kigali, the capital, there never seemed to be any traffic. I rarely heard music playing. The place always seemed eerily quiet, reserved, almost lethargic. How could this be the country where 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed during a hundred-day spasm of ethnic slaughter ten years ago? Read the full At a memorial south of Kigali, Rwanda, skulls mark the country's 1994 genocide, which left 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus dead in the central African nation. Photograph by Stefan Lovgren More News Kids News The Environment Travel National Geographic Channel Special Series Emerging Explorers TravelWatch National Geographic Out There Oceans ... Pulse of the Planet The genocide was ignited by the death of Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above the Kigali airport on April 6, 1994. Soon, the streets filled with murderous Hutu militia known as the Interahamwe, or "those who work together."

Primates and Culture - Rwanda Tries to Lure Tourists Mail this story to a friend Printer friendly version RWANDA: September 12, 2003
SABYINYO VOLCANO - Standing next to a mountain gorilla is a phenomenal experience. About 500 pounds of male silverback tilts its huge face toward tourists peering back through giant nettles in awe.
The only sound on the lush mountainside is the crunching of mountain celery as the gorilla feeds, an occasional low-pitched ah-oomph answered in kind by game guards so that both humans and apes know the other is happy just to observe. With only about 650 mountain gorillas left in the world, visiting Rwanda's ape families has long been the jewel in the small country's tourist crown.

67. Rwanda Journal - Nov 10
In addition to showing me the sights, spending time with them has given me a whole education in that part of Rwandan culture that they represent.
http://pages.globetrotter.net/drsmith/rwanda/Journal4.htm
Rwandan Hospitality Here in Rwanda I inevitably go through moments when I feel homesick and wonder why I ever left Hemmingford in the first place. At those times I ask myself precisely what it is that I am missing about home and when I go through the possible answers I always come to the conclusion that I am not missing November weather (this brilliant deduction was helped along by a number of you dear readers who told me of the snow that fell this past week). Nor am I truly missing shopping, eating in restaurants, cultural events or any of the other attractions of Montreal. Over a longer period I suppose I might miss some of these things but even at home I can easily avoid a mall for more than six weeks at a stretch. Trite and as obvious as it might sound what I truly miss is my family and social network. I am not a highly gregarious person but I am still profoundly dependent on all those day-to-day social interactions for my happiness. This dependence that we have on one another is so fundamental to what it means to be human that it is small surprise that hospitality is highly valued in many many cultures around the world. Rwanda is no exception to this pattern and if I did not fly straight home at the first sign of homesickness it is largely thanks to the extremely warm welcome that I have been given here (and the fact that I don't have the cash to buy the ticket!). My hosts and Rwandan tour guides Cyriaque Rugwizangoga and Richard Nzamwita Each weekend since my arrival Richard Nzamwita (the owner of the software company I am working for) and a friend of his (Cyriaque Rugwizangoga) have insisted on taking me out to visit a different part of Rwanda. We have driven virtually every kilometre of paved road in the country (and more kilometres of what are charitably called 'secondary' roads than various parts of my anatomy care to recall). I have had the chance to see pretty much all the different landscapes that Rwanda has to offer.

LITERATURE Rwanda's literary history is largely an oral one. The traditional texts were classed in two main categories: more formal, royal documents, which are described as 'official tradition', and the non-formal, popular literature. The distinction between these categories is based on whether or not the literature was controlled officially, rather than denoting any sort of value judgment regarding the content. Royal literature consisted of these major sets of texts:
  • Ubucurabwenge - a royal genealogical list Ibitekerezo - a collection of royal myths Ibisigo - a collection of royal poetry Ubwiru - a set of royal rituals
Popular literature consisted (in part) of the following forms:
  • Imyasiro - hunting poetry Indirimbo z'Ingabo - heroic hymns and army music Imigani - proverbs and sayings Ibyivugo: self-praises and heroic poetry
To this day, storytelling and public speaking are much admired, and good storytellers are respected in society.

'The Rwandans are truly amazing people for their willingness to forgive and forget. The scenery in the shadow of the volcanoes was some of the most breathtaking in Africa. Guide extraordinarily knowledgeable.'
Chris Tarrant, Broadcaster

A tiny, landlocked republic in Equatorial Africa, Rwanda lies on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift and the watershed between Africa’s two largest river systems: the Nile and the Congo. Often called the "land of a thousand hills", Rwanda is a mountainous country with a moist, temperate year-round climate.
Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa. French, English and Kinyarwanda are the most widely spoken languages and the population of about 10 million people is largely Christian with some Muslim and Animist communities.

discuss this article
Pauline Nyiramasuhuko is currently facing trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda charged with genocide, complicity in genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, rape as genocide, and crimes against humanity. In addition to being only the second war criminal charged with rape as genocide, she is the first woman ever to be tried for crimes against humanity. The roles of rape during war, and of a female political figure in the commission of mass rape, underscore vital points about the changing nature of gender and power. While crimes against women are perhaps being taken more seriously, the integration of women into political structures clearly does not prevent such crimes from happening. Nyiramasuhuko’s trial follows the 1998 trial of Jean- Paul Akayesu for rape as genocide during the 1994 massacre in Rwanda. Akayesu’s conviction marked a vital transition from the understanding of rape as a tool during warfare — shifting it from a “crime against humanity” to “genocide,” a crime against a race. Rape is now considered genocidal because of its strategic use to infiltrate ethnic lines and terminate persecuted groups. Employed as a eugenic method from the Book of Genesis to the present, before 1998 rape had never been singled out from other forms of ethnic conflict and warfare.

Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, Concluding Observations: Rwanda, U.N. Doc. A/51/38, paras. 301-331 (1996).
Rwanda
301. The representative of Rwanda made an oral presentation, on an exceptional basis, at the 306th meeting of the Committee, on 31 January 1996 (see CEDAW/C/SR.306). She expressed appreciation for the interest the Committee was showing towards her country. She pointed out that Rwanda had reported four times to the Committee on progress in improving the status of women before the tragic and dramatic events, which included not only four years of war since 1990, but unprecedented genocide, with the massacre of an estimated one million people. There had been violations of human rights on a massive scale.
302. The representative pointed out some of the social, political and economic consequences of the events in her country, including physical, psychological, moral and spiritual destabilization of the population, total destruction of the structures of the State and an economy which is now dominated by humanitarian assistance. She pointed out that there had been systematic destruction of the means of production and public services.
303. The representative explained that efforts were under way to address the problems of the country and the effects of the genocide, including rehabilitation for those most affected in the population.
