TRADITIONS OF RWANDA Rwanda became a German colony following the 1885 Berlin Conference, although it would be full decade before a permanent German presence was established there. In 1918, Rwanda was mandated to Belgium, which implemented a system of indirect rule that exploited and intensified the existing divisions between Tutsi and Hutu. Music and dance plays an important role in the traditions of all Rwanda's peoples .The Rwandan people have a variety of music and dance which range from acts that demonstrate epics commemorating excellence and bravery,
humorous lyrics to hunting root. Traditional songs are often accompanied by a solitary lulunga, a harp-like instrument with eight strings. More
celebratory dances are backed by a drum orchestra, which typically comprises seven to nine members, and collectively produce a hypnotic and exciting explosion set of intertwining rhythms.

SABYINYO VOLCANO - Standing next to a mountain gorilla is a phenomenal experience. About 500 pounds of male silverback tilts its huge face toward tourists peering back through giant nettles in awe.
The only sound on the lush mountainside is the crunching of mountain celery as the gorilla feeds, an occasional low-pitched ah-oomph answered in kind by game guards so that both humans and apes know the other is happy just to observe. With only about 650 mountain gorillas left in the world, visiting Rwanda's ape families has long been the jewel in the small country's tourist crown.

    Introduction.
Coming from the part of Africa in turmoil (1)called "GREAT LAKES" ( Democratic Rep of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi), each time I came across the concepts " nation, culture, identity and democracy" , I couldn’t avoid to wonder their significance for a country like Rwanda. What means "nation", "culture", "identity" and "democracy" in Rwanda and how should we understand the Rwandan society? Even though these concepts could be applied to Rwanda, the fact is that since the 1994 genocide of Tutsis, each concept has changed its meaning for an average Rwandan. If democracy is the rule of the people, by and for the people ( taking in account the will of the majority), Rwanda deserves to be treated as an exception. An exception because the notions of " nation, culture, identity" have a very Rwandan meaning. This essay will concentrate on a brief history of Rwanda; the Rwandan notion of nation, culture and identity; and finally, what democracy for which

The population density is 278 persons per sq km (719 per sq mi), making Rwanda one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. The civil war that broke out in Rwanda in 1994 greatly disrupted the ethnic and geographic distribution of the population and caused massive numbers of deaths. However, the country’s density remains high. Rwanda History Back to Top The first known inhabitants of Rwanda were the Twa. The Hutu, probably from the Congo Basin, were well established by the 15th century, when the Tutsi came down from the north and conquered the area. The Tutsi kings, or mwamis, became the absolute monarchs of the region. Their rule was enforced by chiefs and subchiefs, who each ruled an umusozi, a fiefdom that consisted of a single hill. Political and economic relations were based on an unequal feudal relationship, known as the ubuhake system, in which the Hutu became a caste of serfs forced into subjugation and economic dependency by the Tutsi. This caste system was rigidly upheld, and intermarriage was almost nonexistent. A similar feudal system was dominant in Burundi.

R WANDA TO C ANADA E very year thousands of people from all over the world come to Canada to begin a new life. They arrive with many different skills and with the hope of contributing to their new society. This cultural profile was written to help Canadians welcome Rwandan newcomers to Canada. It describes life in Rwanda and some aspects of Rwandan culture. This information will be useful if you are hosting a Rwandan family as part of the HOST program, learning about Rwanda in school or working with Rwandan colleagues who have recently arrived in Canada. I n the early 1990s, many Rwandans came to Canada as refugees to escape the civil war that ravaged their country. Today, some Rwandans come to Canada to pursue higher education. Like all recent immigrants, Rwandans may find aspects of their new home unfamiliar. They will have questions about health care, employment, housing, school and even shopping. You can help by answering their questions. Not only will your help make their adjustment to life in Canada easier, you will also discover that you can learn a great deal from your new friends. A lthough this cultural profile provides insight into some customs, it does not cover all facets of life in Rwanda. The customs described may not apply in equal measure to all newcomers from Rwanda.

Economics of Rwanda
Rwanda is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Consisting of only [10,169] square miles,...smaller than the state of Maryland, Rwanda contains 7.5 million people (1991)...Rwanda, known as the 'Little Switzerland of Africa,' is also one of the world's five poorest countries, with about 95% of the population barely managing to survive on small farm lots called shambas, of about two and one half acres each. Terracing techniques are relied upon to utilize nearly all of the available land for cultivation. However, even with such stringent escarpment devices, the population is living above the carrying capacity of the terrain. Each year another 23,000 families will need new land plots to grow their food and support their livestock. (Fossey, 1983) Rwanda's population density, which is the highest in sub-Saharan Africa, is 332 people per square kilometer (128 people per square mile). Besides the capital of Kigali, few urban centers exist in this countrymost families live in self-contained compounds. Since independence from Belgium, Rwanda's GDP has grown almost 6% per year. This has been offset, however, by the country's rapidly growing population. Consequently, annual per capita income is approximately $200.

Ethnic Groups in Rwanda
Rwanda has a population of approximately 7 million. The languages spoken in this country are French, Kinyarwanda, and Kiswahili; and the religions practiced are Christian, traditional African, and Muslim. The total population of this country comprises several peoples, the most predominant of which are the three ethnic groups: the Tutsi, the Hutu, and the Twa. Photo: Courtesy of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund The Twa, a subgroup of the African Pygmies, are slightly larger than most pygmies. Adult males average 1.5 m (5 ft) and 45 kg (100 lb). The Twa, the earliest settlers of this area, originally lived off the land as hunters and gatherers in the once extensive forests around the Virunga Mountains. But as the forests were cut downfirst by the Hutu for farming and grazing, then by the Tutsi for grazingthe Twa population began to decrease. Today the Twa make up only 1% of the total population. Compared to the other ethnic groups within Rwandan society, the Twa hold an inferior position, due to their smaller size and their customs, which are considered primitive by the Tutsi and Hutu.
The Hutu are related to the Bantu tribes of Central and East Africa. They are typically larger than the Twaadult males average 1.5 m, 13 cm (5 ft, 5 in.) and 59 kg (130 lb). They also, in general, have dark skin and stocky builds. The Hutu
