Culture
International awareness of the two main ethnic groups in Rwanda is unfortunately mainly based on the fact that one tried to wipe out the other in the mid-1990s after a long period of cultural suppression and tribal bitterness. The Hutus, who comprise nearly 90% of Rwanda's population, were originally Bantu-speaking farmers who for most of the past five centuries found themselves under the regal thumbs of the minority Tutsis. A large cross-section of the Hutu tribe was responsible for the attempted genocide of Tutsis and the murders of Hutu moderates in Rwanda in 1994 - in the past, they have themselves been the subject of Tutsi-orchestrated killings in Rwanda and neighbouring Burundi. Tutsis, who make up less than one-fifth of the population, were originally nomadic pastoralists who wandered down into Rwanda in the 16th century and quickly asserted control over the local Hutus. Bolstered by support from Belgian colonialists in the early 20th century, Tutsis continued to rule the ethnic roost until Rwandan independence in 1962. Last but by no means least, the Twa pygmy group - the original inhabitants of Rwanda - make up the remaining 1% of the population. Kinyarwanda is the language most widely spoken in Rwanda, though you won't find it being spoken in any other African countries. English and French are pretty much tied for second place linguistically, though French probably has the

Country Info Rwanda Introduction Rwanda General Data Rwanda Maps Rwanda Culture ... Rwanda Time and Date Rwanda Culture Back to Top Much of Rwanda's traditional cultural heritage revolved around dances, praise songs, and dynastic poems designed to enhance the legitimacy of the Tutsi kingship. Since independence in 1962 another set of traditions has emerged, emphasizing a different cultural stream, identified with a Hutu heritage. Regional dances, including the celebrated hoe dance of the north, are given pride of place in the country's cultural repertoire. Traditional crafts such as basketry, ceramics, and ironworks provide another element of continuity with the past. Rwanda's National Ballet and the Impala Orchestra add considerable lustre to the country's cultural life, the former through a choreography leaning heavily on traditional folk dances and the latter through a distinctly modern musical repertoire. The Association des Écrivains du Rwanda (AER) keeps alive the best of Rwanda's literary traditions, while the bimonthly review Dialogue provides a forum for a vigorous intellectual exchange on a wide range of social and cultural issues.

Kigali - Culture Agriculture is by far the dominant economic activity of Rwanda, with more than 81% of the working population in this sector. Agriculture in Rwanda is practiced on very small, family-run farms: 56% of them are less than one hectare. The principle revenue crop is coffee and tea. An unusual crop, but one of which Rwanda is among the first producers in the world, is Pyrethrum - Quinine is another culture grown especially for export. Stock-farming is concentrated in the South and East of the country. Within the last ten years in Rwanda fish farming has undergone rapid development. The potential of riches lying in Rwanda soil are in small quantity cassiterite, walframite, beryl and gold. The craftsmanship has extended to printing, carpentry, silversmith work, wood carving, wrought iron, basketwork, painting, and many others Rwanda land of a thousand hills with capital kigali is a mountainous country at the center of the Great lakes region of central to eastern Africa, near the "Mountains of the Moon," already famous in ancient Greece. Rwanda's elevation ranges from 1,000m (south and east) to 4,500m above sea level. The "thousand hills" terrain is dominated from north to south by a watershed (2.500m high) that separates the basin of the Zaire River from that of the Nile and by the Ibirunga volcano chain, famous for the last remaining mountain gorillas, who found refuge there.

The only sound on the lush mountainside is the crunching of mountain celery as the gorilla feeds, an occasional low-pitched ah-oomph answered in kind by game guards so that both humans and apes know the other is happy just to observe. With only about 650 mountain gorillas left in the world, visiting Rwanda's ape families has long been the jewel in the small country's tourist crown. But Rwanda's image has been battered by its 1994 genocide and the instability that followed. The country now wants to put itself back on travel agents' maps. Gorillas will remain central to the plan, but Rwanda is looking to expand. "The issue we face in Rwanda is the obvious," said Malik Fal, project director at a consultancy called On the Frontier, referring to the reaction of many people to the idea of vacationing in a country which has seen so much bloodshed. Fal said the world tourism industry was currently worth $476 billion a year, employing one in 12 workers and growing.

    Introduction
The name Rwanda once evoked images of the amazing mountain gorillas and breathtaking mountain views, until the country was devastated by bloodshed. Still, much of it has been rebuilt by its inhabitants, the economy has been resurrected, and travellers can now move around much more safely. The country is still shattered by the attempted genocide of the Tutsi tribe in 1994 - a brutal, unrelenting and allegedly premeditated slaughter by extremist Hutu militias that left nearly a million dead. There's a likelihood that the hatred between the two groups will simmer on. Rwanda's captivating natural features offer some hard-to-beat experiences, from the mountain gorillas in reopened Parc National des Volcans to the hundreds of species of trees and birds in the magnificent rainforests of Nyungwe. Urban centres such as Butare and the capital, Kigali, have forged ahead, opening new places to stay, eat, drink, dance and meet the local population, while the shoreline of Lake Kivu has sprouted relaxing new facilities for visitors and the hordes of remaining NGO staff alike.
    Warning
It's currently safe to travel around most of the country, but caution still needs to be exercised and the latest information sought. Travellers are advised to steer clear of the border with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The population density is 278 persons per sq km (719 per sq mi), making Rwanda one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. The civil war that broke out in Rwanda in 1994 greatly disrupted the ethnic and geographic distribution of the population and caused massive numbers of deaths. However, the country’s density remains high. Rwanda History Back to Top The first known inhabitants of Rwanda were the Twa. The Hutu, probably from the Congo Basin, were well established by the 15th century, when the Tutsi came down from the north and conquered the area. The Tutsi kings, or mwamis, became the absolute monarchs of the region. Their rule was enforced by chiefs and subchiefs, who each ruled an umusozi, a fiefdom that consisted of a single hill. Political and economic relations were based on an unequal feudal relationship, known as the ubuhake system, in which the Hutu became a caste of serfs forced into subjugation and economic dependency by the Tutsi. This caste system was rigidly upheld, and intermarriage was almost nonexistent. A similar feudal system was dominant in Burundi.
