Most of the reports are true and accurate. Crime is on the increase in Mexico, as it is elsewhere in the world. Mexican citizens are outraged at the idea of having crime infect their peaceful country and much pressure is being put on state and federal law enforcement agencies to curb crime and the criminals that cause crime. Visitors can avoid just about all of the situations that encourage criminals to make them a target. Most crimes occur because visitors don't understand Mexico nor Mexican social customs. Mexican citizens are very aware of crime thwarting techniques, but most visitors never give themselves an opportunity to learn from their neighbors.

PROPER rv LOAD DISTRIBUTION AND WEIGHT safety, Loading the rv. can have an unfavorable effect on the handling, ride quality, and braking of your motorhome.
http://www.rvaa.com/articles/load_and_weight.php3
PROPER RV LOAD DISTRIBUTION AND WEIGHT SAFETY Loading the RV Improper weight distribution and heavy items shifting during travel can have an unfavorable effect on the handling, ride quality, and braking of your motorhome. Proper weight distribution is critical when loading the motorhome. Each manufacturer has taken into consideration the location of appliances, cabinets and additional components for proper weight distribution side to side, as well as front to back. When loading food, clothing, cooking utensils, tools and other items, be sure to distribute heavy items evenly throughout the RV. They should also be placed in such a way that they do not shift during travel. Understanding Weight Ratings Many motorhome manufacturers have joined the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. RVIA has developed a set of standards used on a data plate included on each RV produced by participating manufacturers. In motorhomes, the RVIA data plate is located inside one of the cabinets in the kitchen, bath, or bedroom. On travel trailers and fifth wheels, the data plate is located outside near the front of the unit or, in some cases, in a cabinet door inside the RV. On pickups it is located on the doorpost. Following are weight terms and their definitions adopted by RVIA, including the terms and updates added in September 2000.

Mexican citizens are very aware of crime thwarting techniques, but most visitors never give themselves an opportunity to learn from their neighbors. Here are some techniques and wisdom that I've acquired over the years: 1. Organized RV parks are almost immune to serious crime. Petty theft is not uncommon however, especially if careless campers leave expensive fishing reels and cameras laying around outside. RV parks are extremely common on the Baja peninsula and on Mexico's west coast as far down as Manzanillo (200 miles past Puerto Vallarta).

RV Insurance for Mexico - Tips and Information Mexican Liability Coverage: Although there are a few US and Canadian RV insurance companies who may cover physical damage and theft while traveling in Mexico, you will still need to purchase Mexican Liability Insurance prior to entering Mexico.
US and Canadian LIABILITY insurance is not recognized by Mexican authorities, and the consequences for driving uninsured can be severe. If you are in an accident or other vehicle-related problem while driving without Mexican insurance, it is highly likely that your RV or Motorhome could be permanently confiscated and you could be detained by the police.
Physical Damage and Liability Coverage Adventure Mexican Insurance Services offers both Physical Damage and Liability coverage for your RV or 5th wheel trailer.

RV SAFETY
  • CHECK THOSE TIRE PRESSURES! Kim Borne contributes an outstanding and timely article that challenges all of us to ensure that we don't overlook one of the most obvious dangers of all neglected tire pressure!
  • INSTALLING A ROADMASTER TOAD BRAKING SYSTEM: Mike Whitenton is another reader that reached the conclusion that a braking system was an essential safety feature. Here he documents his personal experience in selecting and installing the Roadmaster braking system.
  • INSTALLING A TOAD BRAKING SYSTEM : When Jim Church read about the benefits of a towed vehicle braking system elsewhere at this site, he also decided to research the available systems and do the installation himself. In this article he documents his experience installing such a system on his own diesel pusher. While this is not a project for the casual do-it-yourself RVers, it provides a helpful overview of how the system works, and several cautions to observe.
  • EMERGENCY SHUT DOWN : We experienced a sudden engine shut down which put us at the side of a narrow country road. We concluded we probably hadn't fully thought through all the steps which we might have taken in that situation; and when the problem was finally cured, we decided we'd share this experience along with some helpful tips for how best to proceed in this situation.
  • SAFE DRIVING 101 : We're pleased to welcome back Bob (Ram Muessig), who offers this "must read" article on the basics of RV safety. Safety is a theme of considerable interest to many of our readers, and we're pleased to add to our extensive safety resources with this article.

15. RV Dinghy Towing: Some Safety Tips
Whether rv s should be considered as commercial vehicles and Emergency stopping a motorhome is tough Personal safety of those riding with us or driving near us
http://www.rversonline.org/ArtTow.html
TOWING DINGIES SAFELY
(THE TOWED CAR DILEMMA)
by FRANK GUMMERSALL Like all things in life, we humans have to balance our desires against the risks of financial and personal loss. Maybe it is too risky to have a large dingy. This article outlines the various considerations on the size and weight of towed vehicles.
Motorhomes weigh three to eight times more than vehicles most of us have experience driving. They tip the scales at 7 to 15 tons and require significantly different driving habits than most of us have used for most of our lives. They don't start, turn, and stop as responsively as a 3000 to 5000 pound car. Truck and Bus drivers get specialized training so that they can drive heavy vehicles safely. They must also pass commercial drivers license test periodically and get a physical every two years. Most of us don't get any training to drive the motorhome, we just get in and drive. Whether RV's should be considered as commercial vehicles and therefore require a commercial license to operate, is the subject of a different article that one of us should write.
My argument to you all is to pick the lightest possible dingy and learn how to drive the combined weight safely. Check the owners manual of your motorhome for the towed weight limits, and the owners manual of the dingy for its curb weight and other towed limitations. Lets drive safely and legally out there. In another article, I will outline the merits of the available towed car braking systems.

Advantages of Renting a Motorhome
If you're flying to Alaska or cruising the Inside Passage, upon your arrival, one very viable alternative to the tour bus is to rent a motorhome that comes fully equipped for your vacation in Alaska. This method of travel allows you the freedom to see and visit what interests you most.
Pull in to some garage sales along the highways and meet the people that inhabit the North. You will be surprised at what you can find and the interesting stories you will hear about the lives of these unique and pleasant inhabitants of the last frontier. Driving in Alaska is a little different. Picture vast modern highways with light to moderate traffic, depending on the season and locality. Picture summers endless daylight extending your vacation time for free. Pull into one of the many scenic waysides at your leisure, enjoy a picnic in the pristine wilderness setting surrounding Denali National Park or observe wildlife in their natural settings. Renting a motorhome gives you the opportunity to experience the authentic ambience of Alaska.

The RV Safety Training package Fuel, tires, towing, RV weights, electrical systems…. In the past, many motorhome owners had to attend multiple seminars or buy several books to obtain authoritative information about these subjects. Not anymore. Now these and many more RV safety-related topics are covered in one standardized source of industry-approved information. It’s called the RV Safety Training program and it’s available at FMCA Store.com , from the Accessories page. The program, under development for two years, was produced by the RV Safety Education Foundation (RVSEF), a nonprofit safety education organization. FMCA’s Education Committee is among the organizations, companies and individuals involved in creating the program. Self-paced program RV Safety Training consists of nine easy-to-read 20-page manuals and a supplementary 120-minute safety instruction video (VHS). Designed for everyone who travels in an RV, the program emphasizes safety awareness and emergency preparedness. The manuals contain text, photos and drawings to plainly illustrate safety principles. “The handbooks were written to be easily understood by new RVers and be of value to experienced RVers,” said John Anderson, RVSEF executive director.
