  • Russian is a language representive of the Eastern Slavic language group and is spoken by the people of the Russian Federation (Russia) and its neighboring states.
  • The Russian alphabet is usually called the Cyrillic characters. In the 9th century, the Glagolitics were used in the first Slavic translations of the Christian Bible and liturgy, by the bothers Saint Methodius and Saint Cyril (Constantine before his death) of Constantinople, in Greater Moravia which included the present-day Bohemia and Moravia regions of Czeko, Slovakia, and part of Poland and Hungary. Their desciples were ousted to Bulgaria, and invented the Cyrillic alphabet, based on the Greek uncial characters. This Cyrillic alphabet continued to be used widely in the Middle Age in Russia and Ukraina as the only formal alphabet, and was used in the Church Slavonic language. It was simplified as the Civil alphabet at Czar Peter the Great's time, and further simplified during the Soviet period.
  • The Russian language currently uses the following 33-letter alphabet:
These characters correspond to the following English sounds: a b v g d ye yo zh z yi y k l m n o p r s t u f kh ts ch shch HM ui SM e yu ya where the characters marked by HM (hard mark) and SM (soft mark) are used so that the preceeding consonants are pronounced, respectively, without and with y sound (palatalization).

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DENVER
Forging an identity for the third millenium, Russia has decided to honor its imperial past: the coat of arms and national flag are Tsarist, the national anthem and emblem of the armed forces are Soviet. History and culture saturate Russia, a country whose citizens have traditionally believed in an almost messianic role for their motherland on the world stage. Indeed, Russia remains a country of global political, financial, military and cultural significance. The Russian Language and Literature Program at the University of Denver will give the student the tools and the understanding necessary to function in this culture so similar, and yet so different, from our own. Graduates have proceeded to graduate school, the private sector, and positions in Russia itself, using a foreign language which, after Spanish, is the most in demand in the United States today. Find out why by going to Why Study Russian , a site produced by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) and the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL).

The Master of Arts in Russian Language and Literature (suspended as of July 1, 2002)
Please note that the MA program in Russian has been suspended indefinitely as of July 1, 2002. The Russian Program at DU apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. The Master of Arts in Russian Language and Literature from the University of Denver provides the graduate student of Russian a solid basis in three critical areas of inquiry: language/linguistics, literature/culture, and teaching methodology. This triple-focus is unusual for an American graduate curriculum at the Master's level and provides skills applicable both to a Ph.D. program in Slavistics or another discipline and to a teaching or business career. The student enrolls primarily in the senior undergraduate curriculum, which are graduate-level courses capitalizing on the strength of the undergraduate Russian program and are taught almost exclusively in Russian with most assignments prepared in Russian.
    Requirements
To obtain an MA in Russian from the University of Denver, the student must demonstrate a reading knowledge (with dictionary aids) of French or German, as well as preferably a second Slavic language completed at the first-year level (this is strongly encouraged for student wishing to continue their studies at the doctoral level such students are encouraged to enroll in RUSS 4996 Readings: Second Slavic Language and Literature ). Upon completion of 45 credits of course work (of which no more than 12 credits should be in Independent Study courses and/or cognate areas [which includes courses in English literature]), the student is required to pass the comprehensive examinations, which are two written examinations of three hour's duration, the reading list for which will be decided in consulation with the faculty to accurately reflect the student's personal interests as well as demonstrate a broad area of knowledge.

    http://www.amherst.edu/~russian/menu.html
Welcome to the Amherst Russian Department web page!
The Amherst College Russian Department, four professors and two lecturers, is committed to excellence in the teaching of Russian literature, language, and culture. Each member of the department has achieved distinction as a published scholar in a different aspect of Russia's literary and cultural history. We are a strongly interdisciplinary department, and encourage students to acquire sophistication in reading Russia's cultural traditions through the disciplines of literature, film, cultural studies, history, and politics.
A generous gift from Thomas P. Whitney '37 forms the core of the new and nationally recognized Amherst Center for Russian Culture . Comprised of an archival and rare book collection, plus a 20,000 volume Russian reference library covering many fields, the Center is housed in a beautiful new space in Webster, next to the Department's offices. The Center includes a reading room and a gallery space for exhibitions of Russian art. The Russian collection in Frost library includes thousands of books and periodicals, and a particularly strong collection of Russian films on video and DVD.
In teaching Russian language, we value a mature understanding of how language structures itself as well as spoken, written, and cultural competence. We particularly welcome students who have already studied Russian. But many students begin Russian language study for the first time at Amherst, and we offer a full, four-year language sequence that provides strong training in all aspects of contemporary spoken and literary Russian. Students get a chance to polish their language skills at weekly Russian table in Valentine and at Thursday night tea at
