Users of older browsers may need different fonts for each of the encoding schemes used for Cyrillic on the Internet (Russian Windows aka CP-1251 and KOI-8 being the most common).
I don't recommend it, but it's possible to work around the need for Cyrillic fonts by transliterating the text into Latin script - see the Automatic Cyrillic Converter which converts online between other encodings too, and can output a reformatted web page. There's even an online typer

The Center of Russian Language and Culture of St. Petersburg State University is one of the major centers of short-term study programs for international visitors to Russia. In sharp contrast to the multitude of commercial language programs that have appeared in Russia in recent years, our programs continue the longstanding academic traditions of St. Petersburg State University as a major center for the teaching of Russian as a Second Language. The quality of the Center's programs is maintained by the skill, dedication and experience of our University faculty. The course curriculum of the Center includes a wide variety of programs developed by the experienced professors and gifted instructors of the Center. All our academic programs focus on the use language in of real-life situations. St. Petersburg and its environs provide rich cultural material on which much of the Center's course materials are based. The curriculum also includes extensive area studies material and introduces students to various aspects of life in Russia, including Russian traditions and folk culture.
The Center offers courses in Business Russian for business people from the United States, Europe and Japan, educational programs for diplomatic representatives and their families and for various international organizations, including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the International Red Cross, UNESCO and others.

This section includes tutorial materials using all the multi-media capabilities at hand text, graphics, audio, etc. as well as image maps which could be used with audio material for vocabulary building. A description and comparison of our different alphabets, of pronunciation, and of basic vocabulary would be an excellent start. An introduction to the Russian alphabet can already be found here. An introduction to basic Russian greetings and farewells is available here. More detailed 'courses' for language instruction could be created later. The English-Russian, Russian-English Dictionary and Thesaurus of Computer Terms is now available thanks to the efforts of Yury Avrutin and the permission of Eugene and Paul Druker. Here is a beginning of a "Course of Russian Language in Picture" in which elements of a Russian schoolroom are described with pictures and witha ssociated audio examples of pronunciation (provided by Natasha). This is a good example of what could be done with a Russian language server (and with an English language server). Richard Paine maintains his WWW server of Russian language articles many concerning current events and literary works in Russia. "The primary goal is to provide some realistic material to people studying Russian at a non-elemtary level. But no less important is to provide native speakers access to the material for its informational content."

    History of the Russian Language
The sixth century AD saw the migration of the Slav people from old Poland. The Slavs expanded westwards to the river Elbe and southwards to the Adriatic sea where they gradually occupied much of the Balkans ( more detailed account of Russian history ). By the tenth century, three Slavonic language groups had emerged: Western, Southern and Eastern. Eastern Slavonic gave rise to the modern languages known as Ukranian, Belorussian and Russian. The Slavonic languages retained many features in common especially in grammatical structure, therefore the separate groups were able to use one common written language. This language was known as Old Slavonic or Old Church Slavonic (the language was used in its written form only). In the ninth century, two missionaries - Constantine (who on his deathbed took the monastic name Cyril) and Methodius - were required to write down the scriptures in Old Church Slavonic and to preach Christianity to the people of Moravia. Before they set out for Moravia, Constantine invented a Slavonic, now known as the Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic alphabet is closely based on the Greek alphabet, with about a dozen additional letters invented to represent Slavic sounds not found in Greek (> Prononciation guide
    English/Russian/English

    Electronic Dictionary
In Russia, Cyrillic was first written in the early Middle Ages in clear-cut, legible ustav (large letters). Later a succession of cursive forms developed. In the early eighteenth century, under Peter the Great, the forms of letters were simplified and regularized, with some appropriate only to Greek being removed. Further unnecessary letters were expunged in 1918, leaving the alphabet as it is today.
