    Abstract
Russian basic cultural values are looked at from the point of view of interactional patterns which determine specific features of cross-cultural communication in today's Russia. Such basic values as emotionality not-having-control, irrationality, and judgemental attitudes towards world and other people may but often have significant influence on the success or failure of intercultural workplace communication, effectiveness of management style, and the outcome of business negotiations.
This paper looks at the cases when Russian basic cultural values show up through linguistic choices shaping language production in the workplace, which are consequently misattributed by Western partners. No matter what the language of intercultural communication is - Russian, or English, or German - the meaning of many language expressions may be reconstructed wrongly by the representative of another culture. One of the main reasons for these pragmatic errors is The Politeness Principle applied differently as compared to one's native culture. Yet another - subdivisions within the Russian culture into three main subtypes: T(traditional), S (soviet), and W(westernized).

Notes for Russian Students

Apart from students pursuing a major or double major in Russian, the Russian program regularly attracts a number of Arts students and students from other faculties wishing to include individual Russian courses, whether in language study or in other areas of Russian culture, as electives within the structure of their degree. It is our policy to support and encourage such students, and the career profiles of many former graduates attest to the advantages of studying Russian in conjunction with other disciplines, such as economics, education, engineering, law, medicine or music. The beginners' Russian language courses RSSN1110 and RSSN1120 assume no prior knowledge of Russian, and evening as well as day classes are scheduled for the convenience of students with commitments elsewhere, RSSN1310 Russia Now and Then provides a layperson's introduction to Russian culture and is of wide general interest and relevance. Students with some Russian-language background may wish to brush up their skills with courses at more advanced levels. The program convenor will be happy to advise on a suitable point of entry. Community Access Program It is possible for students to attend lectures/tutorials without enrolling through QTAC. For information, see

Why Study Russian at SMU?
SMU is one of a few select universities in Texas offering Russian language. In this age of increasing globalization proficiency in the Russian language is a great marketable skill. It provides excellent career opportunities for students whose interests are in the fields of international law and business, diplomacy and government, or science and technology, to name a few. Russian is one of the five official languages of the United Nations and is considered to be a major language in world politics, science, culture, economics, and global security. Russian is spoken by 150 million citizens of the Russian Federation and by more than 100 million people in Eurasia, including countries with geo-political significance such as Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia. What is the Russian language program?
The SMU Russian language program has rich traditions and has existed for more than 30 years. The current program gives students the opportunity to learn Russian language in the context of culture and new developments in Russia. This natural approach makes language acquisition engaging, effective, and exciting. Beginning Russian is designed for students with little or no previous language training. The Dedman College offers a minor in Russian Area Studies. This interdisciplinary program encompasses courses in Russian language, culture in translation, history, and political science.

The reign of Catherine the Great was a magnificent era during which, according to a contemporary, "Russia became a European country and St. Petersburg came to occupy an important place amongst the capitals of the educated world." As an adherent of the French philosophers of the time, Catherine II patronized the development of the arts and sciences in Russia. In 1764, construction of the building of the newly-established Academy of Arts was begun (architects Vallin de La Mothe and A. F. Kakorinov). Over many years, numerous talented Russian architects, artists, and sculptors graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, which became a centre for the dissemination of progressive ideas, the ideas of the Enlightenment. According to academic doctrine, painting was the most important genre , although under Catherine II portraiture was of particular significance. The Hermitage portrait gallery of the second half of the 18th century presents individuals from various levels of Russian society; it includes formal portraits of Catherine the Great, of statesmen and courtiers, servicemen, clergymen and numerous persons who were prominent in various fields. These portraits were created both by Russian artists and foreigners who came to work in Russia. Today we can still derive great pleasure from these fine portraits by Fyodor Rokotov, Vasily Borovikovsky, and others, including the most splendid portrait-painter of the mid-18th century, Dmitry Levitsky. His portraits of general-in-chief M. N. Krechetnikov and of a rich merchant from the town of Kaluga, Ivan Bilibin the Elder, and his son Yakov Bilibin the Younger, reveal the splendour of the individual.

The Cambridge Companion to Modern Russian Culture > Customer Review #1: ROOTS AND FLOWERS

This book is comprised of 12 brief, well-written essays by distinguished researchers, put together by the SUNY Stony Brook professor Nicolas Rzhevsky. The volume is divided into two parts: Cultural Identity and Literature and the Arts. If the first part of the book deals with Russian roots, the second is devoted to the flowers of this civilization. On the crossroads of these narratives we see a vast land, stretching from East to West emerging from the union of Slavs and Vikings somewhere around the middle of the eighth century as a number of relatively small cities and tribes. Locked in the never-ending war with nomads prince Vladimir tries to unite them around Kiev. In his first attempt he tried to use paganism. He builds up a gallery of local pagan gods, trying to achieve some kind of union and establish certain hierarchy on the symbolic level. Seeing the futility of these attempts, however, he drops pagan faith altogether and adopts Byzantine (Orthodox) Christianity, which is not dependent on local gods.

    1. Readers in Berlin/Brandenburg
    V. Karjagin, in an article in Mezdunarodnaja zizn (1997, no.3, pp.54ff.: Berlin. Vpecatlenie priezzego), passes on the impression that the Russian language is «present everywhere» in Berlin. Indeed, again a «Russian scene» develops in the future German capital, not to the degree and the intellectual potential of the 1920s when the emigration found a refuge from the Russian revolution, but nevertheless of remarkable quality, and still growing. The House of Russian Culture - originally a meeting place in the context of GDR-Russian relations - gains importance. This holds true also for new clubs and establishments on a private basis. About 12,000 people, including dependents and family members, are in the service of the Consular Department of the former and future Russian Embassy, of Russian official institutions and enterprises and units registered with the Embassy. The Russian-speaking Jewish community amounts to 12,000 former Soviet citizens, and their relatives and guests etc. who do not live in Berlin permanently. Finally there are appr. 1.5 million Soviet immigrants of German descent, and the younger generation is more at home in Russian than in German. While these immigrants settled almost exclusively in Western Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this changed after 1990, and a considerable part remained in Brandenburg. There are also not a few Russian students in Berlin as the Free University concluded a cooperation agreement with St. Petersburg University quite a long time ago.
