Grant may help troubled pupils in Princeton
Board wants to create early intervention learning center
By Jeff Milgram
Princeton Packet Staff Writer
Saturday, March 11, 2000

The Princeton Regional Board of Education will likely seek a $600,000 federal grant to create a learning center that would tutor "underachieving, alienated" students at Princeton High School and offer "early intervention" to pupils at Community Park School.
The learning center is "designed for the kids who don't have sufficient background academically and are tracked for failure," said board member Jeffrey Spear, who presented an outline of how the grant would be used at this week's school board Program Committee meeting.
Initially, the proposed program would consist of a learning center at Princeton High School and the formation of clubs built around math, reading, arts and technology at Community Park, "the school that most closely matches the grant profile," according to the outline for the proposed grant.
Eventually, the program could be extended to the other elementary schools and the middle school.

Educational technology
Educational technology is a term widely used in the field of education (and other areas), but it is often used with different meanings. The word technology is used by some to mean hardware the devices that deliver information and serve as tools to accomplish a task-but those working in the field use technology to refer to a systematic process of solving problems by scientific means. Hence, educational technology properly refers to a particular approach to achieving the ends of education. Instructional technology refers to the use of such technological processes specifically for teaching and learning. (from The Field of Educational Technology: Update 1997 , ERIC Digest, by Donald P. Ely)
