Towns, cities and regions News Topics Introduction Projects ... Links Destination Germany Germany is not just an industrial country, but also a travel destination. This message has got around, and every year millions of tourists from Germany and abroad holiday in the country. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 326.6 million people made overnight stays in German hotels, hostels or guesthouses in 2001. The majority of these, 288.7 million, were German guests. The figures speak for themselves: 57 % of all holidays taken in 2001 remained within the country. Germany is by far the most attractive holiday destination for Germans. On the other hand, two-thirds of Germans tend to spend their main annual holiday abroad. They leave the country in search of adventure, language, culture, sport or relaxation. However, tourism experts suspect that the current uncertainties in the world economy, and the "perceived" inflation since the introduction of the euro, could change this situation in the next few years and make holidays within Germany even more popular. 2002: the International Year of Ecotourism The United Nations and the World Tourism Organization (WTO) have designated 2002 as the "International Year of Ecotourism". Numerous projects are intended to promote the concept of environmentally compatible "soft" tourism. These include the expansion of Germany's long-distance cycle paths and an upgrading of the network of paths for hikers. The German National Tourist Board is using the slogan "Lust auf Natur" ("Enjoying nature") to advertise the diversity of available holidays close to nature. According to a study, most European holidaymakers coming to Germany in 2001 were mainly interested in the landscape and nature. This is no surprise: with two seas in the North, lake and river landscapes, mid-range and high mountains, numerous natural parks and biosphere reserves, the country offers outstanding experiences of nature as well as something often missing elsewhere: a decent tourism infrastructure.

Links Diplomatic Structures Embassies in Berlin When the German Government moved from Bonn to Berlin, most of the diplomatic representations accredited in Germany also relocated to the capital. Only a few of the embassies, mainly those of states accredited in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), were able to make use of existing buildings. The majority of the embassies had to have new buildings erected or buildings that were already in place adapted for this new use. Today, the presence of the diplomatic representations in Berlin, some of them with artistically outstanding designs, enhances the architectural diversity of the city in an impressive fashion. Not infrequently, the conversion and careful treatment of historic structures have also made a valuable contribution to their preservation in accordance with conservation standards. Comprehensive survey Successful renovations, interesting new buildings Academic essays All in all, the authors have produced a book that represents a major addition to the documentation of a fascinating chapter in the history of both Berlin and modern German architecture. The grouping of the embassies in chapters about different areas of the city and the maps showing their locations will enable readers to study the buildings for themselves on architectural walks. An index of architects and a glossary of specialist architectural and diplomatic terms round off this admirable volume.

Clrae Presentation Principal bodies Composition of the Congress ... Secretariat Bulletin no 4 / 1996 ( August-September) From the President Since 1993, local democracy embassies (LDE) have been helping to promote and support local initiatives aiming to foster peaceful co-existence between communities in Croatia, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". So far, the Congress has assisted with the setting-up of eight local democracy embassies which, over the months, have succeeded in becoming genuinely involved in the towns where they are based. Today, local democracy embassies have an even greater role to play in implementing and consolidating the peace process, which has an impact beyond the actual war zone. Thus, the work of LDEs in seeking to bring the various elements of society closer together and to reestablish mutual trust is contributing to the stabilisation of the whole region. The Congress has reaffirmed its support for this innovative and ambitious programme which offers European municipalities, towns and regions the opportunity to establish partnerships with municipalities keen to renew or maintain dialogue between communities. When I took office, I wanted to raise the programme's profile and increase its impact. Local democracy embassies are in a particularly good position to talk to local and regional authorities in the field and thus represent a base for practical work and a platform for international co-operation. The co-operation which has been established between the Canton of Geneva and Bihac

    Barnaul
Barnaul is a Russian city located in the southwestern Siberia. Founded in 1738 as a silver-smelting center, today Barnaul is the administrative center of the Altai Region, a port, a rail junction on the Ob River and a major industrial center with factories producing textiles, machinery and chemicals.
The city is located about 4300 km from Moscow. It takes 52 hours by train or 4 hours by plane to reach. The Trans-Siberian railway passes through Novosibirsk, which is 250 km to the north, and it is easy to access it. The Altai Mountains are about 300 km further south.
If one travels along the Trans-Siberian, he/she should be recommended to take a train from Novosibirsk to Barnaul to travel further to the Altai Mountains.
    Population: about 750,000 people.
