Founded by tsar Peter the Great, St.Petersburg was literally willed into being. Cut by the flowing Neva River and crisscrossed with canals, St.Petersburg is the supreme monument to the Russian people; to the sovereigns who supervised the construction, to the artisans and workers who built it, and to the millions who died defending the city during World War II. As you tour the incomparable “Pearl of the Baltic”, you will be dazzled by beauty at every turn. Though much has changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the majesty of Peter’s “Window to Europe” will enchant you for years to come.

Short-term grant, 2000 July 4, 2001 Soviet way of life and music in Russia of 1920s-1930s (on the basis of materials of St. Petersburg archives)
As a result of research in St. Petersburg libraries and archives performed from June 2000 till June 2001, a considerable number of new sources on the active and quite specific development of musical culture in the Soviet period of the 1920s-1930s has been identified. The cultural forms of leisure of young workers, majority of the population of St. Petersburg, and intelligentsia were studied. It is clear that studying such an important area as the scale, structure and content of leisure allows to determine the aesthetic preferences of different social groups, their mentality and behavioral patterns. More specific attention was paid to music, the traditional pastime and leisure of the city workers and intelligentsia. This sphere, as well as many others, was subject to an indirect regulation aesthetic thinking of the man of the Soviet epoch . Among them the leading place belongs to the Soviet mass song. The research of the concert life during the above mentioned period of time performed on the material of posters and billboards preserved in the Russian State History Archive (the Russian acronym RGIASPB) allows to re-create the picture of functioning of the genres of classical and popular music "consumed" by different social groups of the population within the city's overall musical environment. In this respect our study identifies the place, role, and function (mostly ideology-ridden and upbringing focused) of the classical and folk music in the private life of the city population.

Chagall Exhibition in Budapest It’s the perfect match – one of the largest synagogue buildings in the world hosting the works of one of Judaism’s most beloved artists. A vibrant exhibit of Marc Chagall’s paintings and drawings entitled "Landscapes of Memory" is on display at the Jewish Museum and Archives in the Dohány Street Synagogue complex until the middle of October. "Landscapes of Memory" covers a wide range of themes, from Old Testament prophets to scenes of war. It also combines the artist’s more well known colorful oil paintings with ink and pencil drawings.
Her white gown makes her the focal point in a primary-colored landscape. Also rich in warmth is the lovely 1977 work "The Family," in which a rapt-faced woman in a Russian village holds her child. With typically dream-like touches, Chagall includes people in shades of blue and gray watching kindly over the woman as if to remind her that she is part of a wealth of tradition. In the Magrittesque 1949 work "Wall Clock with Blue Wing," a clock floats above a village in a black sky, with the barest outline of a man with a pack on his back below. The tender "Bella and “The large 1910 painting "The Wedding" shows a demure bride escorted by grinning townspeople and musicians”

Museums: Art treasures of Moscow IHT Sponsored Section
Monday, April 19, 2004 Saint Petersburg may have the Hermitage, but Moscow also has its share of artistic treasures, ranging from superb religious icons to installations by the contemporary performance artist Oleg Kulik, who likes to get naked in public places and pretend he's a dog, and who once milked a dog in a gallery.
For total immersion in Russian art, a stop at the Tretyakov Gallery (10, Lavrushinsky Per., tel.: 230 77 88) is mandatory. The world's largest collection of traditional Russian painting was started with the donation of Pavel Tretyakov, a rich, 19th-century businessman, who left his art collection to the city. The collection continued to grow during the 20th century and now numbers some 100,000 works. The gallery takes visitors on a tour of the country's art history, from the 11th century to the present. The 20th-century section, housed in a separate building (10 Krimskiy val., tel.: 951 1362), covers all the major movements, including Abstraction, works of Soviet Propaganda, Suprematism, the Group 13 and OST movements and Socialist Realism. Among the artists represented here are Kasimir Malevich, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky and Natalia Gontcharova. The museum also holds temporary art and photography exhibitions.

Frederick Starr WASHINGTON - America's campaign in Afghanistan has succeeded beyond its planners' wildest dreams. But after the Taliban's sudden collapse, the United States faces three new challenges. Any of them could throw Afghanistan back into chaos. How will US planners handle these challenges? The signs are far from encouraging. The first problem arose when the Northern Alliance flaunted the US's explicit requests and pushed prematurely into Kabul, setting itself up as a nationwide government. It sent in its own president, Burhanuddin Rabbani, an ethnic Tajik; took over the "power" ministries; began appointing governors; offered government posts to friends; and told the UN not to send international peacekeepers. Nothing could be more calculated to inflame the passions of the plurality Pashtun population, not to mention the 16 million Pashtuns in nuclear-armed Pakistan. This fact was lost in the euphoria of Kabul's fall. But as soon as the Taliban is out of the way, Pashtuns will turn against Mr. Rabbani and his fellow usurpers. A new war will surely follow.
